Shobha Karandlaje interacts with the Brazilian delegation led by Carlos Favaro

Shobha Karandlaje Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare interacted with the Brazilian delegation led by Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply Carlos Favaro. At the outset, Shobha Karandlaje extended a warm welcome to Carlos Favaro.

MoS Shobha Karandlaje showed gratitude for supporting the Indian Presidency during the G20 Agriculture Working Group Meetings and expressed regret for the Minister’s absence and inability to attend the G20 Agriculture Minister’s Meeting at Hyderabad. She expressed happiness that the visit would further strengthen India-Brazil’s rapidly growing cooperation in the agriculture sector. She said that both countries have a flourishing bilateral agriculture trade, and further cooperation can be strengthened in food processing, agro-industry, and agricultural research and development.

Shobha Karandlaje further said that the demand for avocados is growing in India, which provides an opportunity for India to import avocados from Brazil. She assured that India will extend its full support to Brazil for a successful G20 Presidency. She also expressed happiness that Brazil is establishing a task force, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, which aligns with the India Presidency’s Deccan High-Level Principles on Food Security and Nutrition align with this task force.

Carlos Favaro emphasised that Brazil and India face similar challenges in the agricultural sector, and hence, both countries can find standard solutions to mitigate these challenges. The fight against hunger is a paramount focus for Brazil, and they expressed a desire to collaborate with India through technology transfer, knowledge sharing and cooperative efforts with India to fight hunger.

Brazil anticipates receiving India’s specific interests and demands, which can be addressed at the institutional level by both countries. The promotion of bilateral trade was highlighted by Brazil’s willingness to open its market to various agricultural products and expedite Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) related negotiations to facilitate trade.Brazil’s delegation extended an official invitation to India for the forthcoming 2024 G20 presidency.

The meeting between Shobha Karandlaje MoS (Agriculture) and Vladimir Bolea Deputy PM and Minister for Agriculture & Food Industries of Moldova held in Delhi

A meeting between Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and Vladimir Bolea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture & Food Industries of Moldova was held at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi.

Both Ministers emphasised the potential for increasing bilateral trade in agricultural commodities and for strengthening bilateral agricultural cooperation through the exchange of knowledge and technology.

Vladimir Bolea congratulated India on becoming the 5th largest economy and also for India’s G20 Presidency. He proposed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation between the two countries in the field of Agriculture which would provide an institutional mechanism for cooperation between the two countries.

Bolea also expressed Moldova’s interest in exporting vegetable oils to India and importing fertilisers and pesticides from India. He expressed Moldova’s support to India for its membership of the UN Security Council in 2027 and informed that Moldova is a candidate to become an EU member and follows the EU standards and therefore their products are safe to consume.  He highlighted the Moldovan culture of producing wine and apples as a way of life and expressed their interest in exporting these products to India.

MoS agreed to the proposal of the signing of an MoU and proposed that India will soon share a draft MoU with them. She also requested the Moldovan side to send a proposal for cooperation in exchange for technology.

Addressing the seventh International Exhibition and Conference EIMA Agrimach India 2022 in Bengaluru, Shobha Karandlaje, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said that with India becoming a food surplus country, the Indian farmer needs affordable machinery and technologies to expand production and come up with value-added products with export potential,

The three-day conference cum exhibition was inaugurated by Karandlaje, Murugesh R Nirani, minister of large and medium industries, and Muniratna Naidu, minister for horticulture and planning & statistics, Government of Karnataka.

Speaking on the occasion, Karandlije noted that the country’s robust cereals, fruits and vegetable production are at 314 and 334 million metric ton respectively. However, she said, “What the country needs now is affordable and quality food processing, agri-marketing and agri-export avenues.”

Karandlaje encouraged equipment manufacturers and technology developers to manufacture food processing machinery to check the rampant wastage of agriculture and horticulture produce in the absence of value addition. She said that instead of wasting, the food could be exported to nations with limited food production avenues.

During the event, Nirani highlighted that increased efforts were needed for technology improvement, adoption, and exports. In addition, the minister encouraged foreign industry participants to introduce affordable mechanised farming, given the small land holdings in the state. 

The other dignitaries who spoke during the conference included K Ullas Kamath, chairman, FICCI Karnataka State Council; TR Kesavan, chairman, FICCI National Agriculture Committee; Alessandro Malavolti, president, FederUnacoma; Shivayogi C Kalasad, secretary to government, agriculture department, Government of Karnataka; Dr S Rajendra Prasad, vice-chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, and Ravindra Agrawal, chairman, Agriculture Sub-Committee, FICCI Karnataka State Council.

EIMA Agrimach India 2022 has registered participants from more than 40 countries and is expected to witness the presence of over 10000 farmers, industry and foreign delegates, investors, agriculture researchers, and students.

The 12th BRICS Agriculture Ministers Meeting was recently held virtually on June 9, 2022. The meeting was attended by the Ministers for Agriculture of China, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and India.

The Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Shobha Karandlaje, participated in the meeting.  The Minister highlighted various steps and initiatives undertaken by the Government of India in the field of agriculture and for welfare of the farmers viz. PM KISAN, PM FASAL BIMA YOJANA, Soil Health Cards, Natural Farming, formation and promotion of FPOs etc. 

Shobha Karandlaje emphasised on India’s resolve to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals of ending hunger and step up production and productivity of agriculture through sustainable use of natural resources.

The Minister mentioned the recent initiatives taken by the Ministry of Agriculture for increasing the use of digital technologies in agriculture like Agri-stack and India Digital Ecosystem for Agriculture (IDEA).

The Minister highlighted the National Mission on Food & Nutrition with focus on development of nutri-cereals and bio-fortified varieties of crops and also highlighted importance of millets in food and nutrition security and climate resilience.

The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), has signed a MoU with Centre for Food Technological Research Institute, CFTRI, in presence of Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of Science and Technology, Government of India and Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare, Government of India.

The agreement will initiate a joint effort in nurturing deep-science innovation in agriculture, food technology and allied areas towards sustainability and food security in India’s agri sector. It was formally inked by Dr Taslimarif Saiyed, CEO and Director of C-CAMP and Dr Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director, CFTRI at the third edition of the ongoing TechBharat Conclave in Mysore.

On the occasion of the signing Dr Saiyed said, “We are delighted to formalise this pact with CFTRI, India’s leading food technology research institute. The agreement will identify and foster agri innovations and agri entrepreneurships led by the twin pillars of deep-science and sustainability.”

The ministers acknowledged the contribution by both organisations in the development of agritech and agri entrepreneurships in India and appreciated this effort of unifying ecosystems for greater impact.
The new signing is envisioned to augment C-CAMP’s current efforts in Agritech and allied space under its recently launched Centre of Excellence for Agri Innovation in collaboration with the Govt of Karnataka. It will also strengthen science-based entrepreneurships in the CSIR affiliated CFTRI.
