SED to build world’s first boilerless ‘Greenfield Standalone Sugar Refinery’ at Kandla

The 1,500 TPD facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy and designed for zero water consumption with integrated lime recalcination

Completion is targeted for March 2027, setting a new benchmark in circular engineering

Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED), a leader in sustainable industrial engineering, has secured a turnkey contract to build India’s first boilerless greenfield sugar refinery project at Kandla, Gujarat. In addition to project execution, SED will also enter a long-term Operations and Maintenance (O&M) contract, ensuring sustained performance and efficiency well beyond commissioning.

Strategically located near India’s export corridors, the refinery will process 1,000–1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) and is targeted for completion by 31 March 2027. The facility introduces breakthrough sustainability features including Zero Water Consumption, achieved through closed-loop moisture recovery from raw sugar, and Lime Recalcination, enabling internal recovery and reuse of lime to minimize waste solids. Together with its boilerless design powered entirely by solar and wind energy, the project sets a new benchmark for circular engineering. This is the world’s first boilerless sugar refinery operating with zero water consumption and zero emissions.

Vivek Verma, Managing Director, SED commented “This project is the culmination of SED’s mission to decouple industrial growth from environmental depletion. By achieving 99 per cent sugar recovery and zero water consumption, we are proving that sugar refining can be a circular process.”

The refinery will operate with a Zero CO₂ Emission Target, aligning with global ESG mandates and reinforcing India’s position as a hub for green manufacturing technology. Designed for efficiency, it will deliver elite export-quality sugar (<15 ICUMSA) while handling high-colour raw sugar inputs up to 1200 ICUMSA. Energy consumption is limited to ~70 kWh per tonne, and lime consumption will be ~1 kg per tonne of sugar, supported by recalcination.

Pravin Kumar Shishodiya Managing Director at Fullon Sugar Private Limited added “We are proud to collaborate with SED on this landmark project. By combining our expertise with SED’s engineering leadership, we are setting a new global benchmark for sustainable sugar refining and reinforcing India’s position as a hub for green manufacturing.”

By locating the plant at Kandla, the project is positioned to serve both domestic demand and international export markets with high-quality sugar produced under the cleanest industrial conditions available today. This contract reinforces SED’s role in helping heavy industry transition toward India’s 2070 Net Zero goals.
