The agriculture department will be affiliated with SKUAST Kashmir and established under the University of Ladakh

Lieutenant Governor Brigadier (Retd) B D Mishra has made the decision to establish an agriculture department in the University of Ladakh and transfer several units of SKUAST to it, an official spokesperson announced. This decision was made during a meeting at Raj Niwas to discuss the assets of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST).

The Lt Governor has decided that the agriculture department will be affiliated with SKUAST Kashmir and established under the University of Ladakh. Additionally, various SKUAST units situated in Ladakh will be transferred to the agriculture department of the University of Ladakh. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ladakh, Prof S K Mehta, has been directed by Mishra to speed up the process of creating the agriculture department.

Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST Kashmir, provided information about the university and its presence in the Union Territory. He mentioned that two research institutes, two Krishi Vigyan Kendras and six SKUAST units were established in Ladakh during the previous state of Jammu and Kashmir. In August 2019, Ladakh was granted Union Territory status after being separated from the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The spokesperson also stated that the assets of SKUAST-Kashmir will be taken over by the Agriculture Department of the Ladakh University when it becomes fully operational.

Farmers in the Srinagar district are adopting Vegetable Cultivation commercially

Implementing projects under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme, especially in the vegetable sector, is expected to revolutionise Jammu and Kashmir’s vegetable sector, said Atal Dullo, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Agriculture Production Department. Atal Dulloo visited vegetable growing areas of the Srinagar district including Maloora, Takanwari and adjacent parts to take stock of the agriculture scenario.

Dullo said that the poly houses being provided to farmers by the department have created several success stories. The scenario has changed and the results of different initiatives by the department are indeed encouraging and satisfactory. Farmers in the Srinagar district are adopting Vegetable Cultivation commercially, yielding tangible outcomes with the transformation of their living standards.

Dullo also visited the farms of a few progressive farmers in the area and held interaction with them. He sought feedback from them regarding various interventions by the Agriculture department.

Indo-Israel Agriculture Project (IIAP) is establishing proposed Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Jammu and Kashmir. Under the Agriculture Attache MASHAV (Israel’s agency for international Development Cooperation) at the Embassy of Israel in India, centres are going to develop, via the establishment of Centres of Excellence IIAP aims to introduce crop diversity, increase productivity and optimise water use efficiency.

MASHAV will guide the CoE and transfer Israeli knowledge into the IIAP. CoE will comprise nursery management, best practices cultivation techniques, irrigation, and fertigation. The region has the potential to produce vegetables and fruits by using modern technology for which MSHAV is ready to extend guidance and support in the form of expertise and technical know-how to the farmers and the department alike.

MASHAV is leading the IIAP from the strategic and tactical aspect while providing professional leadership during the planning and executing phase, transfer of knowledge and agro-technology. MASHAV is ready to establish two centres one each in Jammu and Kashmir divisions for which Detailed Project Report would be prepared in consultation with the Agriculture Department.  

India and Israel have strategic cooperation on the Government-to-Government level in the field of agriculture. Centres will establish under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) scheme with authorizing, budgeting and monitoring the project while State governments allocate staff, land and another budget.
