Experts from agriculture sector discussed about in new approaches towards climate-resilient agriculture during the panel discussion on Climate-resilient Agriculture Technologies and Approaches in Asia’ during the launch event of B2B portal AgroSpectrum Asia organised by AgroSpectrum.

The application of precision agriculture and genomics technology is important for climate-resilient agricultural practices in India, said Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairperson, of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Authority (PPVFRA)). He was speaking in a panel discussion on Climate-resilient Agriculture Technologies and Approaches in Asia on the occasion of launch event of agrospectrumasia.com portal organised by Agrospectrum.

Ashok Dalwai, CEO, National Rainfed Area Authority, Govt of India, Smita Sirohi, Joint Secretary – G20/BRICS & SCO, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt of India, Pawan Agarwal, CEO Food Future Foundation, Dr C D Mayee, Former Chairman, Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, Govt of India was moderate the panel discussion. Ravi Boratkar AgroSpectrum Publisher and Managing Editor and Milind Kokje Chief Editor of AgroSpectrum were present on the stage.

Dr C D Mayee, moderator of the panel discussion emphasised that though the impact of climate changes is not seen at large scale, but small holder farmers are suffering badly due to the impact of climate changes. In such a scenario, climate resilient technologies for agriculture will help in mitigating the challenges of agriculture sector on large scale.

Dr Mohapatra emphasised that mainstreaming of GM crops (genetically modified) will be beneficial for farmers.

Ashok Dalwai, CEO of, the National Rainfed Area Authority, said, “We need to restructure and reorient the Indian agricultural sector. We should adopt a new approach to the country’s agriculture for climate-resilient agriculture.   

Smita Sirohi addressed the awareness approach in climate-resilient agricultural practices. She said, “We have to have a very systematic approach in agriculture. We are less prepared for climate-resilient agriculture, most countries are working on climate-resilient agriculture.”

Pawan Agarwal suggested that India must focus on climate-resilient agricultural practices.   

Ravi Boratkar explained the present scenario of agriculture sector in Asia and role of the agrospectrumasia website in bridging the gap between the Indian agri industry and the Asian agri market.

Boratkar also added that the AgroSpectrum Asia portal provides information about Asian agriculture market, latest trends in agri industry and also highlights the major activities in R& D agriculture sector and analysis of agriculture markets in APAC region.

Discussions were held on the efficient management of stored grains

The “7th Meeting of the Indian Grain Storage Working Group (IGSWG)” was recently organised by the Division of Agricultural Engineering, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi at the National Agricultural Science Centre Complex, New Delhi.

Inaugurating the meeting, Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) urged for looking into the bulk storage of grains and bringing out a comparison of its advantages and disadvantages to the traditional methods as a document. The Director-GeneralDirector-General also suggested establishing the extensive linkages with the Department of Food and Public Distribution, Food Corporation of India, Industry Partners and other stakeholders for the efficient management of the stored grains.

Dr SN Jha, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Engineering), ICAR briefed about the salient achievements of the group since its inception. Dr Jha highlighted the Theme of the 7th Meeting – “Natural Modern Grain Storage Technologies” and its importance in the era of organic farming and natural farming.

Dr Suresh Kumar Chaudhari, Deputy Director General (Natural Resource Management), ICAR highlighted the importance of the grain storage vis-à-vis the location and environmental conditions of the place.

Dr Tilak Raj Sharma, Deputy Director General (Crop Science), ICAR suggested the adoption of modern technologies along with natural techniques for enhancing the shelf life of the grains.

Dr Ashok Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR also graced the inaugural session of the Meeting.

Earlier, Dr Kanchan K Singh, ADG (Farm Engineering), ICAR delivered the welcome address.

The scientists from the various ICAR Institutes and All India Coordinated Research Project on Post-Harvest Engineering & Technology Centres, Faculty Members and Students from ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi; delegates from CFTRI, FCI and Industries, etc., participated in the meeting.

The 4th Graduation Ceremony of Post-Graduate Diploma in Management-Agri Business Management (PGDM-ABM) Programme of ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management, Hyderabad was recently held.

M Venkaiah Naidu, Vice-President of India warded the degrees to 144 students from four batches of the Institute. One student from each batch was also awarded with the Director’s Medal for their Outstanding Overall Performances and Gold Medal for their Best Academic Performances by the Vice-President of India. He also accentuated the country could become Aatma Nirbhar only when the agriculture sector continues to grow in the future as well. Naidu stressed, the sectors need innovations and use of frontier technologies which can be disseminated through the agri-business professionals.

The Guest of Honour, Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) commended the PGDM-ABM Programme of the Academy which not only achieved 100 per cent placement; but, also provided the quality manpower to the agri-business industry and start-ups. The academy’s contributions of capacity building of the NARS and Think-Tank Research Policy Development in Agriculture and Food Systems for the country were applauded by the Director General.

Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr Ch Srinivasa Rao, Director, ICAR-NAARM, Hyderabad underlined the institute’s overall achievements of skill development, education programmes, placement activities, international training and policy development covering all the sub-sectors of agriculture.

Ministers discussed ways to improve the agri sector and the role being played by ICAR

The 93rd Annual General Meeting of the ICAR Society was recently organised at the National Agricultural Science Centre Complex, New Delhi.

Delivering his presidential address, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar underlined the establishment of the ICAR in 1929. The pivotal role played by the Council through its research and technology development in creating the food and nutritional security in the country with the untiring cooperation of farmers and scientists over the years was also highlighted by the minister. Tomar underlined the record production of the food grains and horticultural products in the country that has made us self-sufficient to meet not only the domestic demands enabled to supply the same to the different countries as well.

Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying urged for recognising the local techniques of the small farmers. The encouragement of the cheese made from Banshi Gir Cow’s Milk for export was also stressed by the Union Minister. Rupala suggested the ICAR get benefitted from the upcoming three events – G20 Conference, International Dairy Programme and Jamnagar getting International recognition in Ayurveda.

Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare urged for working in pace with the visions of the Prime Minister. He said that there is a scope for working in the field of horticulture. Mentioning a number of plants that are being imported, the minister urged for developing their varieties in the country itself.

Ramesh Chand, Member, NITI Aayog stated that in the current Financial Year, India’s Agricultural exports have crossed $50 billion. He said that there has been an increase of about 22 per cent in a single Year.

Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) underlined the development of 389 new varieties by the ICAR during the last Year. The DG mentioned the focus on crops and pulses varieties. Dr Mohapatra stated that the new research in food crops and horticultural arenas have benefited the country to a large extent.

Raghavji Patel, Cabinet Minister, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cow Breeding, Government of Gujarat; Virender Kanwar, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, Government of Himachal Pradesh; Tage Taki, Minister Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Horticulture & Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh were among the Guests of Honor during the occasion.

The Members of ICAR Society; Members of ICAR Governing Body along with Sanjay Garg, Additional Secretary (DARE) & Secretary (ICAR); Sanjiv Kumar, Financial Advisor (DARE) and Senior Officials & Scientists of ICAR were also present during the occasion.

Experts emphaise on how innovations played a key role in green and white revolution

Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General, ICAR, Government of India emphasised that nurturing agri innovations is imperative for agricultural development. Innovations played a key role in green and white revolution.

Addressing the 4th edition of ‘FICCI Agri Startup Summit & Awards’, Dr Mohapatra said, “The evolving technologies and agri innovations are to be mainstreamed and deployed in the fields.” Dr Mohaptra mentioned that there has to be efficiency, climate resilience and high productivity with quality and we need more and more players to be part of it.

Neelkamal Darbari, MD, Small Farmers’ Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC), Government of India said that the timing is apt to leverage technologies for the small and marginal farmers. The government has already launched the e-NAM (National Agriculture Market) which is a pan-India electronic trading portal that networks the existing APMC mandis to create a unified national market for agricultural commodities.

TR Kesavan, Chairman, FICCI National Agriculture Committee & Group President, TAFE Ltd said that FICCI Awards for agriculture start-up has emerged as a leading platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their potential.

Vivek Chandra, CEO, Global Branded Business, LT Foods, said that agri start-ups will play a crucial role in bringing in the required technology and innovation needed to meet the increasing demand for food as the world population grows.

Ashok Varma, Partner, PwC said that at present, there are more than 700 AgriTech start-ups in India that are developing customised solutions and products to make the agricultural value chain more profitable and remunerative. With an impressive inflow of funding, more than 48 per cent of AgriTech CEOs in the country believe that they will have the next AgriTech unicorn within a three-year time frame.

Amit Mundawala, MD and Co-founder, Star Agribazaar Technology highlighted that Agritech companies can play important role in enhancing farmers’ income. This can be achieved if we have a proper database of all the parameters needed in remote sensing resulting in accurate farmer advisory services which will, in turn, increase the yield, reduce the input cost, and make the proposition win-win for all stakeholders.

Hemendra Mathur, Chairman, FICCI Task Force on Agri Start-ups & Technology & Venture Partner, Bharat Innovation Fund said that Indian AgriTech is entering its third phase, which will be driven by increasing farmer adoption of new-age innovations and a significant degree of consolidation in the start-up space.

The 4th edition of FICCI Agri Start-up Awards was announced during the event along with the release of FICCI-PwC Knowledge report “Agri start-ups – Fostering collaboration to bring paradigm shifts in Indian agriculture’ and publication on Agri Start-ups by FICCI Task Force members.
