A supplier of an ingredient for its widely used herbicide glyphosate has run into technical problems

Bayer has recently informed that a supplier of an ingredient for its widely used herbicide glyphosate has run into technical problems. In a statement Bayer’s global head of active ingredient manufacturing Udo Schneider said that the company’s ability to supply its customer with glyphosate or glyphosate-based products as per agreements could be impacted.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Bayer brands such as Roundup and RangerPro.

“Our supplier is on track to restore production, and we have sourced additional materials and made other mitigation efforts to help best manage this situation,” Bayer spokesperson commented in a statement.

In a letter, Bayer has alerted industrial customers using glyphosate to the supply issue, declaring force majeure, which typically suspends a supplier’s contractual liabilities in the wake of disruptions beyond its control.

Year-over-year sales grew 25 per cent organically

FMC Corporation has recently reported a record of fourth quarter 2021 results with revenue of $1.41 billion, an increase of 23 per cent versus fourth quarter 2020, driven by strong demand and pricing actions. Excluding the impact of foreign exchange, year-over-year sales grew 25 per cent organically. On a GAAP basis, the company reported earnings of $1.52 per diluted share in the fourth quarter, compared to $0.38 per diluted share in the fourth quarter 2020. Adjusted earnings were $2.16 per diluted share, an increase of 52 per cent versus fourth quarter 2020, and 16 cents above the midpoint of guidance.

“Our financial performance reflects the strength of our synthetic and biological portfolios, a healthy demand environment as well as accelerating price increases. Revenue growth was particularly robust in North America and Latin America,” said Mark Douglas, FMC president and chief executive officer.

Fourth quarter revenue growth was driven by 21 per cent contribution from volume and 4 per cent contribution from price with a 2 per cent currency headwind. FMC achieved higher pricing in all regions, with the highest benefit in the quarter coming from North America and Latin America. 

In Asia, revenue was down 3 per cent compared to fourth quarter 2020, primarily due to weather challenges in several countries, including China. This offset solid growth in Australia and India, as well as broad-based pricing actions in the region.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Textiles and Commerce & Industry has said that the Pilot movement of food grains on vessel from Patna (Bihar) to Pandu (Guwahati) will open a new gate to the ‘Gateway of North East’. Addressing virtually on the occasion of “Flagging off of vessel” MV Lal Bahadur Shastri carrying food grains from Patna to Pandu and unveiling of foundation stone for terminal at Kalughat (Bihar) on February 5, 2022.

Piyush Goyal said that this 2,350 km voyage will open a new gate to the ‘Gateway of North East’ (Assam) and ensure seamless waterways connectivity to NE Region through Ganga & Brahmaputra rivers. He said that flagging of the vessel named ‘MV Lal Bahadur Shastri’ reminds me of Shastriji’s slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”.

The minister stated that the planned intermodal terminal at Kalughat, Bihar with Rs 78 crore will provide boost to region’s socio-economic development and create multiple job opportunities. This will also help decongest the roads of North Bihar and provide an alternative route for transportation of cargo in this area. He further said that this route from Patna can prove to be a viable alternative to the conventional mode of movement of foodgrains & goods for NE region.

The Minister also mentioned that India-Bangladesh friendship is reaching new heights under Prime Minister Narendra Modi & HE Sheikh Hasina. This event is another milestone and a testament to ever-growing friendship between India and Bangladesh, he said. This first food grain movement will be an integrated IWT movement via National Waterway-1 (river Ganga), NW-97 (Sunderbans), Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route and NW-2 (river Brahmaputra).

The ICAR-Central Citrus Research Institute, Nagpur, Maharashtra signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola, Maharashtra for facilitating the Students’ Training and Research on February 4, 2022.

Dr Dilip Ghosh, Director, ICAR-CCRI, Nagpur and Dr VM Bhale, Vice-Chancellor, Dr PDKV, Akola signed the MoU on the behalf of their respective organisations.

After the successful commissioning of the formulation facility, the production of high-end formulations has started well in time there. The manufacturing capacity of the facility is 18,000 MTPA.

Seedling India Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Best Agrolife Limited is a technology-savvy integrated research and development centre located in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. It will be a one-stop site offering products based on WG, SG, ZC, and EC.

BAL set up this integrated research and development centre to strengthen the farming community. The company will work on in-house developed combinations for effective pest management and crop protection. Equipped with one fully automated WDG plant, one large capacity SC unit, and one modern GR formulation unit, this facility will act as a base for BAL for bringing in more innovative formulations in the form of one-shot solutions for the farming community.

Mahindra Logistics Limited (MLL), one of India’s large 3PL solutions providers, has announced its consolidated financial results for the quarter ended on December 31, 2021 with revenue at Rs 1118 crore as compared to Rs 1047 crore in Q3 last year and EBITDA at Rs 50 crore against Rs 55 crore last year.

The company also reported PBT Rs 7 crores as compared to Rs 25 crores in Q3 last year and PAT Rs 5 crores compared to Rs 18 crores last year. For the nine months in FY22 revenue was Rs 3010 crore as compared to Rs 2290 crore last year and EBITDA at Rs 149 crore against Rs 101 crore.

Further the company reported that the revenue from warehousing services and solutions in the quarter grew 35 per cent over the same period last year underlining the focus on solutions-led approach to customer’s requirements.

Rampraveen Swaminathan, Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra Logistics, said, “The quarter gone by was a challenging one. Demand from the auto sector continued to be impacted due to semi-conductor supplies; and the festive season too saw moderate growth. We continued to deliver strong revenue performance, especially across Consumer, Pharma and International freight forwarding. Our margins saw pressure due to seasonal manpower costs, lower than expected demand and start-up costs for new projects. The focus continues to be on optimising operating costs. We remain focused on delivering technology driven, integrated solutions for enterprise customers.”

ADAMA has announced that it has received registration by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for two rice herbicides: Diverge Silk and Diverge EC.

Diverge Silk and Diverge EC are propanil herbicides that provide effective control of grasses and broadleaf weeds in rice. Diverge Silk is a novel suspension concentrate formulation that offers rice growers improved quality and handling for reliable weed control without the hassle of clogged up spray tanks or nozzles. Diverge Silk is registered in AR, CA, FL, LA, MO, MS and SC. Diverge EC is a cost-effective, high-quality propanil formulated right here in the US and is only registered for use in AR.

These products add to an already robust rice herbicide portfolio for ADAMA. The webinar series aims to broaden the scope of training, education, and connectivity within the hemp community.

The USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Cornell University have recently announced the launch of a webinar series on hemp research that aims to broaden the scope of training, education, and connectivity within the hemp community.

“ARS solves agricultural challenges that affect all Americans,” said Zachary Stansell, USDA-ARS geneticist and acting hemp curator. “Hemp is rapidly emerging as a critical multi-use and economically significant crop, so this hemp seminar series is designed to increase the diversity, equity, and inclusivity of ARS’ mission while providing hemp-specific education, training, and networking opportunities to historically undeserved communities.”

The research team believes that by broadening the scope of training, education, and connectivity within the developing hemp community, they can create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for new hemp and empower hemp research by bringing diverse voices into the larger conversation.

“Training and educating new scientists from many different backgrounds is critical in order to achieve the most cutting-edge solutions to an array of issues producers face — from climate change to economic viability,” said Cornell University Crop Specialist Daniela Vergara.

Starting January 26, the webinars will occur every other Wednesday from 2 pm – 3 pm EST and include an interactive Q&A session.

Delhi-based agro-inputs major, Best Agrolife Limited has announced its financial results for Q3FY22 on January 25, 2022 in their Board of Directors meeting.

Commenting on the results, Managing Director of BAL, Vimal Alawadhi said, “The current quarter’s performance would be sustainable in quarter 4 too, as the production will soon commence in its newly set up state-of-the-art formulation unit Seedlings India Limited where BAL’s new proprietary formulation ‘RONFEN’ will also be produced. Above all, the strategic alliances with premier customers including leading MNC’s are also being formed under which new businesses will commence with newly launched high value speciality products.”

Profit before tax was at Rs 91.3 crore, with a growth of 466 per cent over PY of Rs 16.1 crore and the profit after tax was Rs 66.6 crore, registering a growth of 464 per cent over PY of Rs 11.8 crore. EBITDA was at Rs 103.7 crore (11.5 per cent) with a growth of 628 per cent over PY of Rs 14.2 crore (2 per cent).

Moving ahead with their expansion plan BAL has now acquired Agrico Chemicals through a cash deal of Rs 10.22 crore. Agrico Chemicals is situated at Phase-1, SIDCO Industry Complex, IGC Samba, Jammu & Kashmir.

This acquisition is crucial for BAL in many ways. Other than increasing the company’s revenue by Rs 150 crore approximately this unit will also add formulation capacity of 8000 KL/MT per annum. The plant at Agrico Chemicals will be specifically dedicated to proprietary formulations like WG, SC, and EC.

USA Dry Pea Lentil Council hopes for improved talks on India tariffs to continue the pulse trade with India.

USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council (USADPLC), the highest quality producer of lentils, dry peas, and chickpeas for national and international markets, has exuberantly laid out a vision for a healthy and viable 2022. Green Planet Group an emerging leader in green technology, announced recently that its wholly owned subsidiary, Healing the Earth (HTE) has launched its urban farm operation. The company has trademarked the name “Healing the Earth Farms” as its brand name for all growing activities.

The farm will utilise its patented growing technology to both demonstrate its effectiveness in growing 100 per cent organic food with 97 per cent less water, using no soil or chemical fertilizers, while accelerating growing time by as much as 300 per cent. The farm will begin growing three varieties of micro-greens, a Kalefetti, Radish, and a Spicy Micro mix. The ‘living’ micro-greens are harvested with their roots intact which improves shelf life while maintaining taste and nutrition values.

The Healing the Earth Farms label includes a QR code which will permit the retail customer to connect directly to its website to obtain additional product information and suggested recipes from Chef Alex. In addition, Chef Alex will begin a promotion whereby customers can submit their recipes for cash rewards.

The farm will harvest food every day, 365 days per year, and will begin delivering its products to up-scale grocery chains in the fourth week of this month, at the rate of 280 units per day or 8,500 units per month.
