A supplier of an ingredient for its widely used herbicide glyphosate has run into technical problems

Bayer has recently informed that a supplier of an ingredient for its widely used herbicide glyphosate has run into technical problems. In a statement Bayer’s global head of active ingredient manufacturing Udo Schneider said that the company’s ability to supply its customer with glyphosate or glyphosate-based products as per agreements could be impacted.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Bayer brands such as Roundup and RangerPro.

“Our supplier is on track to restore production, and we have sourced additional materials and made other mitigation efforts to help best manage this situation,” Bayer spokesperson commented in a statement.

In a letter, Bayer has alerted industrial customers using glyphosate to the supply issue, declaring force majeure, which typically suspends a supplier’s contractual liabilities in the wake of disruptions beyond its control.

Inaugurating the Workshop, the Chief Guest, Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat underlined the components of the natural farming like use of Bijamrut, Jeevamrut, Ghan Jeevamrut, Mulching and multiple cropping systems. He stressed that by using these methods, the natural farming can be done without affecting the yield and dependency on the import of agriculture fertilisers and other inputs can be reduced.

Devvrat highlighted the concept and philosophy of the natural farming. He stated that the natural farming helps in reducing the cultivation cost, enhancing the soil fertility and yields and protecting from uncertainties of climate change by adopting agro-ecology based principles.

The Special Guest, Jagdish Vishwakarma Panchal, Minister of State for Cooperation and Cottage Industries, Government of Gujarat underlined the Department’s working towards providing the marketing facilities to the farmers practicing natural farming in the state. He also urged the participants for taking the concept of natural farming at the village level too.

Dr CK Timbadia, Director of Extension Education, Navsari Agriculture University, Navsari, Gujarat outlined the success of forming the natural farming groups and master trainers for orienting the farmers and development functionaries.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Textiles and Commerce & Industry has said that the Pilot movement of food grains on vessel from Patna (Bihar) to Pandu (Guwahati) will open a new gate to the ‘Gateway of North East’. Addressing virtually on the occasion of “Flagging off of vessel” MV Lal Bahadur Shastri carrying food grains from Patna to Pandu and unveiling of foundation stone for terminal at Kalughat (Bihar) on February 5, 2022.

Piyush Goyal said that this 2,350 km voyage will open a new gate to the ‘Gateway of North East’ (Assam) and ensure seamless waterways connectivity to NE Region through Ganga & Brahmaputra rivers. He said that flagging of the vessel named ‘MV Lal Bahadur Shastri’ reminds me of Shastriji’s slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”.

The minister stated that the planned intermodal terminal at Kalughat, Bihar with Rs 78 crore will provide boost to region’s socio-economic development and create multiple job opportunities. This will also help decongest the roads of North Bihar and provide an alternative route for transportation of cargo in this area. He further said that this route from Patna can prove to be a viable alternative to the conventional mode of movement of foodgrains & goods for NE region.

The Minister also mentioned that India-Bangladesh friendship is reaching new heights under Prime Minister Narendra Modi & HE Sheikh Hasina. This event is another milestone and a testament to ever-growing friendship between India and Bangladesh, he said. This first food grain movement will be an integrated IWT movement via National Waterway-1 (river Ganga), NW-97 (Sunderbans), Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route and NW-2 (river Brahmaputra).

The webinar series aims to broaden the scope of training, education, and connectivity within the hemp community.

The USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Cornell University have recently announced the launch of a webinar series on hemp research that aims to broaden the scope of training, education, and connectivity within the hemp community.

“ARS solves agricultural challenges that affect all Americans,” said Zachary Stansell, USDA-ARS geneticist and acting hemp curator. “Hemp is rapidly emerging as a critical multi-use and economically significant crop, so this hemp seminar series is designed to increase the diversity, equity, and inclusivity of ARS’ mission while providing hemp-specific education, training, and networking opportunities to historically undeserved communities.”

The research team believes that by broadening the scope of training, education, and connectivity within the developing hemp community, they can create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for new hemp and empower hemp research by bringing diverse voices into the larger conversation.

“Training and educating new scientists from many different backgrounds is critical in order to achieve the most cutting-edge solutions to an array of issues producers face — from climate change to economic viability,” said Cornell University Crop Specialist Daniela Vergara.

Starting January 26, the webinars will occur every other Wednesday from 2 pm – 3 pm EST and include an interactive Q&A session.

AgBiome’s research is focused on developing biological pest control solutions for the following crops: maize, sorghum, banana and yam.

AgBiome, the leader in developing innovative products from the Earth’s microbial communities, announced the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has continued their granted support, funding phase 2 research aimed to develop novel, efficacious, safe and low cost of production microbial pesticides (fungal control and nematicide) for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan African countries. AgBiome’s research is focused on developing biological pest control solutions for the following crops: maize, sorghum, banana and yam.

The overarching goal of this project is to leverage AgBiome’s scientific expertise, infrastructure, and previous success developing biological fungicides to develop microbial solutions that will benefit small-holder farmers in African countries.

AgBiome has successfully achieved milestones in phase 1 of this project, including:

  • Successfully developing microbial screening assays against the target diseases
  • Identification of 100 microbial strains with confirmed activity against one or more of the target fungal diseases and 25 strains prioritised for further evaluation.
  • Identification of 20 nematicidal bacterial strains able to control the root knot nematodes (RKN) on-plant and three lead strains prioritized for further evaluation.

In phase 2 of this research, AgBiome will focus on the evaluation of the strains prioritised in the phase 1 of the project under appropriate field conditions and select microbes with the best efficacy.

“Upon completion of phase 2, AgBiome will provide production-ready lead and backup strains with proven efficacy to control a spectrum of fungal diseases and nematodes in the key sub-Saharan African crops,” said Dave Ingham, Pre-product Manager at AgBiome.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dubai-based Lulu group to set up a food processing and logistics hub in Srinagar on January 6, 2022.

The MoU was signed in Dubai in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and LuLu Group Chairman MA Yusuff Ali.

This agreement was signed by J&K Principal Secretary (Industries & Commerce) Ranjan Prakash Thakur and LuLu Group Executive Director Ashraf Ali MA at Dubai.

Commenting on the occasion, Manoj Sinha said the MoU with the LuLu group will further expand Jammu & Kashmir-Dubai collaboration and Jammu Kashmir-LuLu Group partnership.

“Relations between India and the UAE are long-standing and deep-rooted. People-to-people contact and trade have seen momentum in the recent years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the Governor said.

It is anticipated that India’s rice exports in 2021-22 would likely surpass the record feet of 17.72 MT achieved in 2020-21

In 2020-21, India’s rice exports (Basmati and Non-Basmati) rose by a huge 87 per cent to 17.72 Million Tonne (MT) from 9.49 MT achieved in 2019-20. In terms of value realisation, India’s rice exports rose by 38 per cent to $8815 million in 2020-21 from $6397 million reported in 2019-20. In terms of rupees, India’s rice export grew by 44 per cent to Rs 65298 crore in 2020-21 from Rs 45379 crore in the previous year.

In the first seven months of the current financial year (2021-22), India’s rice exports rose by more than 33 per cent to 11.79 MT from 8.91 MT achieved during April-October, 2020-21. It is anticipated that India’s rice exports in 2021-22 would likely surpass the record feet of 17.72 MT achieved in 2020-21.

In 2020-21, India shipped non-basmati rice to nine countries – Timor-Leste, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Eswatini, Myanmar and Nicaragua, where exports were carried out for the first time or earlier the shipment was smaller in volume.

India’s Non-Basmati rice exports were valued at $4796 million (Rs 35448 crore) in 2020- 21, with Basmati Rice exports a close second at $4018 million (Rs 29,849 crore).

In terms of volume of Basmati rice exports in 2020-21, top ten countries – Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, US, Kuwait, UK, Qatar and Oman have a share of close to 80 per cent in total shipments of aromatic long-grained rice from India.

The top ten countries – Nepal, Benin, Bangladesh, Senegal, Togo, Cote D Ivoire, Guinea, Malaysia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates – have a share of 57 per cent in India’s total exports of non-Basmati rice in 2020-21 in terms of volume.

The sharp spike in rice exports especially during a phase where globally the COVID19 pandemic has disrupted supply chain of many commodities has been attributed to the government taking prompt measures to ensure exports of rice and other cereals while taking all the COVID19 related safety precautions.

“India continues to supply rice to the global market thus ensuring food security in many countries while many countries are stockpiling in anticipation of logistical disruption because of COVID19 pandemic,” said Dr M Angamuthu, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Exports Development Authority (APEDA). 

APEDA has helped improving port handling facilities at Kakinada, Vishakhapatnam, Chennai, Mundra and Krishnapatnam and Paradip, thus boosting rice exports.

It is anticipated that India’s rice exports
