Bioangels will raise Rs 350 crore investment for startups 

Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) collaborated with the Indian Angel Network (IAN) to launch an angel investor network, BioAngels. BioAngels is the country’s first sector-focused angel investor group to fuel the growth of startups from Biotech – the sunrise sector. Sub-domains include medtech, healthtech, pharma, cleantech and agritech. The biotech sector has the potential for cascading multiplier effect to contribute to India’s economic growth target of a $5 trillion economy by 2025.

BioAngels is an inclusive platform that engages early-stage investors from India and overseas from different angel investor groups, to fund and nurture high-quality startups, with both money and mentoring backed with critical sectoral expertise. BioAngels’s vision is to become the platform of choice for Investors and innovative startups to build globally competitive companies.

The Madhya Pradesh government is launching its Startup Policy and Implementation Plan – 2022 to promote startups and encourage entrepreneurs in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch virtually, Madhya Pradesh’s Startup Policy and Implementation Plan, 2022 at the Brilliant Convention Center, Indore on May 13, in the presence of the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The startup policy has provisions to strengthen and bring to reality the entrepreneurial ideas of the youth of the state. A slew of events is planned across the state to drive awareness about the Madhya Pradesh Startup Policy.

The Sagar Smart City Incubation Centre, SPARK has made rapid strides in promoting Madhya Pradesh Startup Policy 2022. A series of policy awareness boot camps and workshops have been organized in various educational institutions, business establishments, and among the startup community, including Government ITI College, Edina Institute of Science, in Sagar.

Concurrently, about 18 startups are being incubated under the Smart City project in the Gwalior district. The government has selected several ideas from around 50 startups in the region for which a special workshop will be organized on May 11. This would be done to help understand the needs of these needs and to ensure that these ideas come to reality under the new start-up policy.

P Narhari, Secretary MSME Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh said, “The new Startup Policy is quite different from the old policy. One important feature being added in the MP Startup Policy 2022 is the concept of ‘MP Startup Centre’. Earlier, only one policy was being implemented by the department, but now this will be implemented in tandem with the MP Startup Centre. The startup centre will have a dedicated office, a head/mentor for every startup and experts from the relevant field, who will help the startup community.”

Poshn, a platform for wholesale processed commodity distribution & financing has raised Rs 28.8 crore in seed funding, led by Prime Venture Partners and participation from Zephyr Peacock. Poshn provides a seamless and efficient procurement platform especially for bulk processed commodities in a highly fragmented agri supply chain market.

The startup has partnered with 100+ wholesalers across ecommerce, modern trade, general trade and has seen an aggressive adoption from across the supply chain. Poshn has reported a 20X growth in the last eight months and aims to grow at 25 per cent MoM over the next one year. The startup will use the fresh capital to aggressively grow and hire across tech and business functions.

The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoAs) with 13 agri start-ups of Punjab Agri Business Incubator (PABI), Directorate of Extension Education (six under Udaan and seven under Uddam). These start-ups are selected by Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana – Remunerative Approaches for Agriculture and Allied Sectors Rejuvenation (RKVY-RAFTAAR), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India for grant-in-aid.

Dr Ashok Kumar, Director of Extension Education, PAU signed MoAs on behalf of PAU and congratulated the start-ups.

Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication, PAU and Principal Investigator, PABI, said that agri start-ups should work with full dedication to excel in agribusiness in collaboration with their co-agri-startups under all three cohorts of PABI.

Dr Poonam A Sachdev, Head, Department of Food Science and Technology, PAU and Co-Principal Investigator, PABI, urged the representatives of start-ups to utilise the grant-in-aid efficiently to generate employment in Punjab.

Selected startups to pitch at Tyson’s first Demo Day on July 11

Tyson Ventures, the venture capital arm of Tyson Foods, announced its first-ever pitch event for sustainability entrepreneurs and startups. Tyson Demo Day will be held virtually on July 11, 2022, and selected participants will be invited to demonstrate how their solutions could help create a more sustainable food system. The goal of the day is to identify and ultimately invest in breakthrough, sustainable technologies that can help Tyson Foods reach its sustainability goals.  

At Tyson Demo Day, the selected companies will virtually pitch their solutions to a group of Tyson Foods executives. Following Demo Day, selected startups will have the opportunity to engage with Tyson Foods’ senior leadership and partner with the company on breakthrough ideas to help advance sustainability across the company.

Applicants will be evaluated based on alignment with Tyson Ventures’ investment strategy, the solutions they present, and the potential those solutions have to help Tyson Foods meet its sustainability goals. Solutions that align with those goals include, but are not limited to, greenhouse gas emission reduction, reducing food waste, animal welfare, regenerative agriculture, packaging, soil health, and water management. The deadline to apply is May 15, 2022.

Agri-tech startup, Otipy (operated by Crofarm Agriproducts), India’s first community group buying platform for fresh produce, raised Rs 235 crores ($32 million) in its Series B round led by Westbridge Capital. Existing investors SIG and Omidyar Network India also participated in the round. These fresh funds have come in six months for Otipy, after its series A funding of Rs 76 crores ($10.2 million).
