India and Russia explore MoU to boost agricultural trade and technology collaboration

In a move aimed at deepening bilateral ties in agriculture, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan met with Russian Deputy Minister for Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev on 26 September to discuss enhancing trade and expanding India’s agricultural exports to Russia. The discussions also explored formalizing the partnership through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation across the sector.

Minister Chauhan highlighted India’s strategic priorities in agriculture, emphasizing food security, improving farmer incomes, and ensuring access to safe and nutritious food. He described the India-Russia relationship as one marked by an “exemplary level of mutual trust and understanding” and invoked the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or “the world is one family,” underscoring the importance of international collaboration for farmers’ welfare and global food security.

Deputy Minister Patrushev affirmed Russia’s commitment to reinforcing agricultural trade ties and expressed strong interest in formalizing the partnership through an MoU. Both leaders explored collaboration in seed traceability systems, research and development initiatives, and technical exchanges designed to accelerate innovation and technology adoption in farming practices.

The discussions further highlighted opportunities to strengthen education and scholarship programs for students pursuing agriculture-related studies, signaling a commitment to capacity-building and knowledge exchange between the two nations.

The meeting reflects a strategic step toward enhanced India-Russia cooperation in agriculture, combining trade, technology, and human capital development to benefit farmers and ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
