The integration of the wild corn gene marks the world’s first instance of using genetics from wild corn—a type of grass—to enhance the performance of commercial corn hybrids

Origin Agritech Ltd. a leading Chinese agricultural technology company, today announced a breakthrough development in its commercial corn hybrid offerings. Origin Agritech has successfully integrated a gene from wild corn into one of its elite commercial corn hybrids for the first time in the industry. This approach represents a significant scientific milestone and sets a new benchmark for crop yield performance and efficiency.

The integration of the wild corn gene marks the world’s first instance of using genetics from wild corn—a type of grass—to enhance the performance of commercial corn hybrids. This innovative genetic modification has improved plant type and photosynthesis efficiency, enabling the hybrid to achieve higher yields by supporting increased plant density per acre.

One of Origin Agritech’s mainstay commercial hybrids, which has been a market leader for over 20 years due to its superior performance, has been the focus of this enhancement. The improved version of this hybrid can now be planted at a 10-15 per cent higher density, offering a potential yield increase of more than 10 per cent. This advancement is expected to drive the new hybrid to replace the current version within two years, further solidifying Origin Agritech’s market share and leadership in the agricultural sector.

Dr Gengchen Han, Chairman and CEO of Origin Agritech, stated, “This breakthrough is a testament to Origin Agritech’s commitment to innovation and our continuous efforts to push the boundaries of agricultural technology. By harnessing the untapped potential of wild corn genes, we have significantly improved our hybrid’s performance, setting a new standard for efficiency and yield in the industry. We anticipate the enhanced hybrid will replace its predecessor and capture more market share thanks to its superior performance and adaptability. This is a proud moment for our team and a major step forward in our mission to provide sustainable and high-performing agricultural solutions to the world.”

Origin Agritech is dedicated to leveraging cutting-edge biotechnological research to develop crops with higher yields, improved nutritional profiles, and better adaptability to environmental challenges. This latest innovation underscores the company’s role as a leader in the global agritech industry and its commitment to enhancing food security and farming efficiency worldwide.

Yunnan will purchase 20,000 metric tonnes of Origin’s nutritionally enhanced corn

Beijing-headquartered Origin Agritech, an agriculture technology company, announced recently that the company and Yunnan Feeding Company have entered into a supply agreement, under which Yunnan will purchase 20,000 metric tonnes of Origin’s nutritionally enhanced corn (NEC).

Pricing will be based on the prevailing price of corn at the time of delivery but based on current market prices the deal would be valued at RMB3100 per metric ton, or RMB62 million in total ($9.2 million).

Origin had previously announced 50,000 metric ton supply agreement back in April of this year. The approximate combined value of the two orders is RMB217mm ($32 million). This backlog of orders does not include any impact from the previously announced collaboration with BaoDao Feed.

“It is quite gratifying to see the feedstock industry’s excitement and demand for our new corn variety, NEC,” said Dr Gengchen Han, Origin Agritech’s Chairman. “We are focussed on operations and ramping up production to catch up with the quickly increasing demand.”

The new traits include change of the leaf angle and improvement in drought tolerance of corn

Origin Agritech Limited, an agriculture technology company, announced that the company, together with its partner China Agricultural University, has submitted applications for bio-safety certificates for six newly developed gene edited traits that significantly increase the yield of corn crops.

The new traits include change of the leaf angle and improvement in drought tolerance of corn. Changing the leaf angle and plant types will improve the photosynthesis efficiency and increase the planting population, which in turn increases yields. The new traits will also improve the water use efficiency and drought tolerance for corn plants. Origin is currently integrating these traits into its commercial hybrid corns, including the company’s nutritionally enhanced corn.

In late January, China announced that the country would allow gene edited crops and that the approval process would be very streamlined as compared to the process for getting a new GMO trait approved.

Origin began creating gene edited corn traits in 2017 and already has developed many other desirable traits. Additionally, Origin’s insect resistant and herbicide tolerant GMO corn is also in the approval process. All of these traits could be integrated into these corn crops as well, further increasing yields.

“Given the current challenges facing the world of food inflation, environmental change and uncertainty of food exports from certain countries due to geopolitical events, we are thrilled to be playing a major role in improving food security,” said Dr Gengchen Han, Origin Agritech’s Chairman.

The company has already successfully converted its elite corn hybrids into drought resistant traits.

Origin Agritech an agriculture technology company based in China, has announced that its drought resistant GMO trait has completed production trials and an application has been filed for biosafety certificate approval.

Through its collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Origin has already successfully converted its elite corn hybrids into drought resistant traits. The trait has expressed excellent performance under water stress conditions through the whole growing period. Multiyear experiments have shown the yield of drought tolerance corn is 9.2-16.2 per cent higher than non-GMO corn under similar conditions. Under irrigated conditions, the GMO enhanced corn increases water use efficiency by 33-47 per cent.

Dr Gengchen Han, Origin Agritech’s Chairman, said, “We are very excited to have another GMO trait pending approval for a bio-safety certificate, which is the final step in the approval process before the production license. We expect drought resistance to play a key role in the agricultural industry as it is forced to adapt to climate change disruptions globally.”
