Pune-based Smartchem Technologies Limited (STL), a 100 per cent subsidiary of Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (DFPCL), a trusted chemicals and fertiliser manufacturer in India, has laid a foundation stone of its Technical Ammonium Nitrate (TAN) complex at Gopalpur Industrial Park on December 9, 2021. CM of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation of the project in presence of Chairman & MD of STL, Sailesh Mehta, and Dibya Shankar Mishra, Minister of Energy; Industries; Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises.

The project is being built with an investment of Rs 2,200 crore and will have a capacity of 377 KTPA. The plant has the best-in-class technology from Casale, that ensures safest plant with lowest possible emission. The project is expected to be completed by August 2024.

On project completion and commencement, Odisha will become a key source of TAN to the entire Eastern Belt where majority of Mining and Infrastructure growth is foreseen in future.  It will generate employment for 1,500 people during the project phase and 325 people during the operation phase.

Sailesh Mehta, said, “STL is partnering with Odisha to support growth in the Mining & Infrastructure Sector and this complex is the first step to accomplish our ten-year-old dream to expand operations in the Eastern Region and come closer to our end users. Technical Ammonium Nitrate is a very important raw material that will fuel the infrastructure, economy, and development of the nation. We are looking forward to reducing our dependence on imports and the Gopalpur Industrial Park’s strategic location may help us do that very quickly in the near future. Tata SEZL can attract ancillary units and become a hub for development.”

The Department of Processing and Food Engineering (PFE), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has been granted two research projects entitled “Development of the Hermetic System for Safe Storage of Agricultural Produce without Using Hazardous Chemicals” and “Development of Sensor Platform for Rapid Detection of Adulteration in Turmeric Powder” by the Society of Mission Tandrust Punjab (SMTP) under the chairmanship of Anirudh Tewari, IAS, Chief Secretary, Punjab.

The research projects were submitted by Dr Mahesh Kumar, Head, Department of PFE; Dr Gagandeep Kaur, Dr Preetinder Kaur and Dr Maninder Kaur, scientists from PFE; Dr DK Sharma, Senior Entomologist; and Dr Derminder Singh, Professor of Electrical Engineering. The first project aims at developing and evaluating cocoon based flexible storage system that would make available pesticide free grain storage system and hence prevent health and environment hazards. The second proposal targets to develop mechanisms for rapid detection of different adulterants in turmeric powder and create and evaluate a sensor platform for rapid detection of different adulterants in turmeric powder. The total grant of these projects amounts to approximately Rs 40 lakhs.

The PAU Vice Chancellor DK Tiwari, IAS Financial Commissioner, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Director of Research Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt and Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology Dr Ashok Kumar congratulated the scientists for their achievements.

The MoU will support the farmers for adopting the sustainable Agri-food systems

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi on the Technical Cooperation Project (TCP) for strengthening the capacities to support the farmers for adopting the sustainable agri-food systems.

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh outlined the setting-up of the Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs) as a part of an effort for weeding out the fake seeds, pesticides and fertilisers from the markets. The chief minister stated about the measures that are taken to ensure remunerative prices to the farmers.

The RBKs are the One Stop Shops for supplying the Government Certified Agri Inputs (Seeds, Fertilisers & Pesticides), Animal Husbandry & Fisheries Inputs to the farmers and have an attached Workshop/Knowledge Centre for providing the Scientific Agro-Advisories to the farmers.

Currently, 10,778 RBKs are operating in the state that are integrated Centres offering various agriculture-related services under one roof. The ICAR through its Research Institutes and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) Network will provide the RBKs with the latest technologies and help in capacity building.

Poonam Malakondaiah, Agriculture Special Chief Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh; Tomio Shichiri, Country Director, FAO, India and Dr Ashok Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR signed the MoU on the behalf of their respective organisations.

As per the MoU, the FAO will provide technical and financial assistance to RBKs in the State and the ICAR & FAO will work collaboratively towards strengthening the RBKs in the state.

nurture.farm, a digital platform for sustainable agriculture, has published the results of the Crop Residue Management (CRM) Program: the largest ever project to eliminate stubble burning in India. The CRM program impact report has evidenced benefits across reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improvements in soil health and farmer livelihoods, as well as reduced usage of fertilisers.

Results published in the CRM program impact report indicate 92 per cent overall stubble burn avoidance across the enrolled farms, with close to 420,000 acres of the land saved from being burnt, resulting in the prevention of 1,038,965 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions from being released.

Through the CRM program, nurture.farm supported over 25,000 farmers across 23 districts in Punjab and Haryana with access to farm mechanisation, and a bio-enzyme to decompose their crop stubble. Throughout the project, over 1000 field personnel from nurture.farm led a fleet of more than 700 boom sprayers serviced over 420,000 acres of paddy fields with the bio-enzyme, developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), free of cost to the farmers. When sprayed onto the stubble, the PUSA bio-decomposer enzyme decomposes the stubble in 20-25 days, increasing organic carbon in the soil and maintaining overall soil health.

Satellite monitoring of the paddy fields – in partnership with the European Space Agency – was used to identify farms that had been burnt at least once between 2018-2020 and were also used to help analyse farmers adherence to the program. For ensuring the program’s efficiency and scale, nurture.farm developed three mobile applications to improve farmer connectivity and educate farmers on regenerative practices, conduct area mapping, arrange spraying schedules, and monitor machine and equipment use.
