Corona works with barley farmers in India to buy leftover straw that is often the cause of crop burning

Global beer brand Corona announced the launch of a new 100 per cent biodegradable and compostable six-pack made from barley straw in India. The new circular form of packaging reaffirms Corona’s larger goal of protecting and preserving nature. The Corona six-pack, made of 100 per cent barley straw, is as durable as regular packaging. This eliminates the need for using virgin wood from trees and other resources while tying back to Corona’s commitment to protecting this beautiful paradise around us.

With circularity at the core of this innovation, Corona works with barley farmers in India to buy leftover straw that is often the cause of crop burning, a critical issue in North India, to manufacture these 100 per cent biodegradable compostable six-packs. By commercialising barley straw, farmers receive an income for crop waste that otherwise has limited marketable benefits. Converting barley straw to packaging uses 1/3rd of water compared to traditional technologies. Additionally, introducing such eco-friendly packing helps reduce crop burning and prevent approximately 1400 KG CO2 emissions/tonne of packaging produced.

Discussions were held on the need for cooperation of the state governments and the Centre so that awareness is raised among farmers across the country

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar presided over a national webinar on ‘Seed Chain Development.’ Tomar said the state governments, in consultation with the Central Government, should prepare a roadmap for 10-15 years for the benefit of farmers. He said it should be ensured that the farmers get timely supply of good quality seeds. State governments should strictly curb black marketing and those selling fake seeds.

Tomar said, “Availability of good seeds for farming increases production and productivity, resulting in higher income for farmers and raising the share of agriculture in GDP besides benefitting our agriculture and the nation’s economy. Planning should be done for adequate supply of seeds of crops like pulses-oilseeds, cotton etc.”

Tomar said that the cooperation of the state governments is also necessary for seed traceability, so that awareness is raised among farmers across the country and they can take rightful decision regarding the seeds for their plantation as per the requirement.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shobha Karandlaje said it should be ensured that the varieties of seeds developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research reach the farmers at the grassroots level. Along with this, the states should work in a planned manner at the district level on all aspects related to the agriculture sector, so that the farmers do not face any problem.

Addressing the webinar, the Union Agriculture Secretary Manoj Ahuja said that arrangements should be made to provide quality seeds to the farmers right down to the Panchayat level, while awareness should be raised among the farmers about testing of seed quality.

Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Abhilaksh Likhi and other senior officers were present in the programme. Senior officials of the Agriculture Department of the states and the representatives of the seed corporations of the centre and the states joined the webinar virtually. The company is working directly with farmers around the world on initiatives that protect, regenerate, and restore the land

Cargill is working directly with farmers around the globe to focus on advancing nature-positive agriculture production and farmer-centric approaches to sustainably.

Nature-positive production focuses on limiting the destruction and depletion of land by evolving the techniques proven to increase volume and efficiency, while adopting regenerative agriculture practices that prioritise land sustainability. By doing so, farmers can feed more people and address climate change.

These practices include planting cover crops and implementing reduced- or no-till farming to help sequester carbon in the ground, build soil resilience and improve water quality. One way Cargill is helping make these practices more tenable for farmers is through RegenConnect, a voluntary market-based programme that pays farmers per ton of carbon captured in their soil.

“If we’re going to succeed in sustainably transforming our food and agriculture system, we have to help farmers take a nature-positive approach,” says Pilar Cruz, Cargill’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “That’s why we’re working directly with farmers around the world on initiatives that protect, regenerate, and restore the land. This is how we will make a meaningful difference, one field and one farm at a time.”

Another way Cargill is helping farmers make sustainable agriculture economically feasible is by ensuring they receive a premium for sustainably sourced crops. Through the Triple S (sustainability sourced and supplied) soy program in South America, Cargill provides customers in Asia, Europe and North America certified deforestation-free soy from farmers in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

These programmes demonstrate how scaling sustainable agriculture requires removal of the financial and market access barriers that still exist in farming.

A meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare was recently held. The committee discussed various aspects of the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) Scheme for improvement and better implementation.

Addressing the committee, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the government is running a campaign for saturation of KCC to farmers to cover all leftover PM KISAN beneficiaries. He said that all the administrative charges up to Rs 3 lakh of short term loans i.e processing fee, inspection fee, ledger, folio charges etc have been waived off so that the maximum number of farmers can get the loan at a cheaper rate through the Interest Subvention Scheme.

The minister also told the committee members that the form for KCC has been simplified and directions have been sent to banks to issue KCC within 14 days of receipt of the complete application form. At the India Pavilion, the theme of ‘Food, Agriculture and Livelihood’ was represented by celebrating the diversity of Indian Agriculture under four major sub-sectors: Millets, Horticulture, Organic and Food Basket of the World (dairy, poultry & fisheries). The stories shared through the sub-sectors also covered Food Processing & Cooperation, which are also pillars for future growth.

Starting on February 17, 2022, the fortnight was inaugurated by Dr Abhilaksh Likhi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare along with Shubha Thakur, Joint Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The inaugural ceremony also included the opening of the Millets Food Festival along with introductory conversations amongst the Government & Private sector.

In line with the recent declaration of the year 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets’ by the United Nations General Assembly, India’s advantage as a major Millet producer was highlighted during the expo. A seminar on Millets was conducted to highlight India’s potential and tremendous opportunities of this sub-sector, for stakeholders across the Millets value chain including processing & export.

The seminar organised on the subject ‘Indian Organic and Horticulture Sector–Moving Up the Value Chain’, further emphasised on the progress made in these sub-sectors to improve quality and access high-value markets.

Tamil Nadu-based Samunnati has recently launched the Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan, a dedicated crowd-sourcing campaign driven via Samunnati’s corporate social responsibility outreach. Pravesh Sharma, Director, Samunnati Agro shares insights on the aspects related to ‘Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan’- major activities, challenges and latest launches

What are the major activities completed around ‘Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan’ in the past 3 months?

To free farmers from the vulnerabilities of personal risks in agriculture, and to promote the culture of insurance across rural India, especially smallholder farmers, Samunnati launched the Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan on October 2, 2021. We partnered with Milaap, our crowdfunding partner, for this initiative and have raised close to Rs 1 lakh via their platform. We also reached out to various CSR partners and corporate through our larger network to promote awareness about this platform, as well as to invite their contributions towards this noble cause. We are in discussions with a few other leading agri-tech companies to understand how we can work with them to create a bigger socio-economic impact. On the ground, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) are our last mile partners to reach individual member farmers and deliver product information, enable documentation and assist in claim settlement.

We have raised over Rs 11.5 lakhs in support of this initiative from various sources, including a payroll campaign conducted internally within Samunnati. Through social media handles dedicated to the initiative, we are sustaining our efforts to bring in more participation from Indian corporates and philanthropists.

What are the challenges that Samunnati faced/is facing while rolling out the programme to beneficiaries?

Data collection has been one of the biggest challenges that the Indian agriculture sector has struggled with over the years. Gathering demographic details of individuals including date of birth, contact number, address with pin code, gender, etc. plays a huge role in being able to provide insurance. Unfortunately, this level of detail is not regularly maintained by most of the FPOs in our nation. Further, owing to constraints with staff and other resources, undertaking data collection has also not been an easy task for FPOs.

On-ground activation and awareness building play an important role in the success of such campaigns. As we work around the ongoing pandemic and various restrictions that have been put in place, we are streamlining our efforts to promote the campaign via offline channels in the coming months.

Number of farmers/ FPOs onboarded to the insurance programme and the markets where ASA created the most impact.

To date, we have onboarded around 12,000 farmers from 40 FPOs across 11 States. A majority of these farmers are from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra owing to our extensive network in these regions. In Gujarat, we have a long-standing association with GujPro which helped us make in-roads in reaching farmers in the region.

How does your company plan to deliver this scheme to India’s smallholder farmers?

Samunnati plans to partner with farmer collectives (FPCs, Cooperatives etc.) and agri enterprises which closely work with small holder farmers to take this scheme to the last mile. We believe this approach is more sustainable, and scalable. So far, we have on-boarded 40+ FPOs, and 1 Agri enterprise and insured 12,000 farmers.

How can Samunnati bring in a revolution in the agri community through ASA?

India is plagued with the following two challenges:

High incidence of farmer accidents and related fatalities – 2000 plus farming accidents and over 100+ fatalities happen every day, leading to estimated daily losses worth Rs 15Cr

Negligible insurance penetration, less than 1 per cent farmers having access to accident-related insurance

Agriculture in itself is plagued with variety of risks and challenges, while a few government/ private sector initiatives are working towards addressing some of them, initiatives around insurance, and farmer protection from financial distress related to accidents are insignificant.

The initiative Annadata Suraksha Abhiyaan attempts to fill that void by promoting the insurance culture among farmers and providing personal accident coverage through this initiative. We plan to expand the scale and scope of coverage and include risks related to other farming uncertainties in the years to come.

The initiative aims to make agriculture risk free for our farmers, and for India.

What are your plans for the next five years?
We plan to onboard as many as 5 million farmer families on this platform in the next 5 years. We will be approaching this in phases, mapping the progress we achieve each year.
