IIT Ropar launches ANNAM.AI to power India’s AI-driven agricultural transformation

Alliance for next-gen nourishment through agriculture modernization

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) is spearheading ANNAM.AI — the Alliance for Next-Gen Nourishment through Agriculture Modernization — a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence for Agriculture dedicated to building scalable, AI-driven solutions for sustainable and precision farming.

Established under the Government of India’s Rs 990 crore initiative by the Ministry of Education to set up three national AI Centres of Excellence across key sectors, ANNAM.AI combines academic excellence with real-world agricultural impact. The initiative reflects India’s commitment to harnessing advanced technologies for transformative sectoral growth in agriculture, healthcare, and sustainable cities.

Transforming Indian Agriculture Through AI

ANNAM.AI aims to leverage artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technologies including computer vision, IoT, cyber-physical systems, digital twins, and advanced data science to address core agricultural challenges such as soil health management, smart irrigation, pest and disease detection, climate forecasting, yield optimization, and supply chain efficiency. By embedding intelligence into farm-level and ecosystem-level decision-making, the Centre seeks to improve crop productivity, enhance farm efficiency, and promote climate-resilient and resource-efficient farming practices.

Phase 1A of the initiative focuses on high-agricultural-intensity regions including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, with plans for scalable national expansion.

A National Backbone for Agricultural AI

IIT Ropar is leading one of India’s three national AI Centres of Excellence, positioning ANNAM.AI as a cornerstone of the country’s “Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India” strategy. Conceived as a data-driven National Agriculture Intelligence Advisory platform, ANNAM.AI integrates AI/ML, computer vision, immersive technologies, and digital infrastructure to modernize the agricultural value chain.

The Centre combines deep R&D capabilities, institutional credibility, and access to top-tier talent with a public-good mission anchored in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Unlike private agri-tech ventures, ANNAM.AI operates with research depth, long-term data stewardship, and a national-scale mandate—ensuring reliable, farmer-friendly AI systems tailored to India’s unique agricultural conditions.

Talent Development and Skill Ecosystem

Beyond technology deployment, ANNAM.AI is actively nurturing sector-specific talent through hackathons, internships, joint PhD programs, and industry-academia collaborations. These efforts align closely with the Government’s Skill India vision and the broader ambition of building a developed Bharat by 2047.

Alignment with National Missions

As a Centre of Excellence for Agriculture Intelligence, ANNAM.AI aligns with and supports key national missions central to the Prime Minister’s development agenda, including:

Viksit Bharat @2047, strengthening inclusive and technology-driven rural transformation.

Atmanirbhar Bharat, enabling indigenous AI-led agricultural self-reliance.

Digital Agriculture Mission (DAM) and AgriStack, advancing data-driven advisory systems and farmer-centric digital public infrastructure.

IndiaAI Mission, accelerating AI adoption in crop intelligence, yield forecasting, and climate risk modeling.

Digital India Mission, strengthening agricultural digital infrastructure.

National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), promoting climate-resilient farming.

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), enhancing crop loss assessment using AI and remote sensing.

National Food Security Mission (NFSM), supporting productivity and demand-supply forecasting.

Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), facilitating agri-innovation and state-level technology deployment.

Direct contribution toward SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and India’s Paris Agreement commitments.

Cutting-Edge Technologies Driving Impact

ANNAM.AI ensures access to high-performance computing, advanced sensor laboratories, and interdisciplinary research teams. Strategic collaborations have been established with Punjab Agri Export Corporation Ltd. (PAGREXCO), the Northern Farmers (a Farmer Producers Organization), and the Indian Institute of Soil Sciences.

Among its flagship innovations:

Annam Chat Engine (ACE):
A scalable agri-advisory platform that includes a Farmer Chat Bot delivering hyperlocal advisories, weather updates, and market insights. Integrated with a Kisan Call Centre (KCC) Agent Interface, the system enables agricultural advisors to provide region-specific, real-time guidance. The ANNAM Information Center (AIC) at IIT Ropar further empowers farmers with AI-enabled analytics, offline AI tools, and tailored decision-support systems.

SWAN – Smart Weather and Analytics Network:
A next-generation micro-climate intelligent infrastructure that functions as an advanced smart weather station. By continuously monitoring temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, UV exposure, and air quality, SWAN builds precise real-time microclimate profiles. Its predictive analytics optimize irrigation, improve crop planning, and enhance climate resilience.

Krishi Intelligence Platform:
A unified digital decision-support system capable of crop identification, crop damage assessment, and pest detection through image-based and sensor-driven intelligence. By delivering actionable, data-backed advisories, the platform enhances productivity, reduces losses, and strengthens climate-resilient agricultural practices.
