As part of the Pan-India Action Research Project on the Improvement of Spice Value Chains, the ICAR–Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Kozhikode, organized a three-day Capacity Building Programme on Sustainable Ginger and Turmeric Cultivation . The initiative aimed to enhance scientific knowledge, agronomic skills, and value chain insights among stakeholders engaged in spice production across the country.
The training was inaugurated by Dr. R. Dinesh, Director of ICAR-IISR, and featured technical sessions led by domain experts. These sessions highlighted advanced cultivation techniques, sustainable agronomic practices, and emerging innovations in ginger and turmeric production. Participants also visited the ICAR-IISR processing facility to witness modern spice processing technologies in action.
On the second day, trainees undertook a field visit to the IISR Experimental Farm at Peruvannamuzhi, observing practical cultivation techniques for major spices along with associated processing methods. A visit to the Krishi Vigyan Kendra provided exposure to intercropping systems and region-specific cultivation practices, reinforcing integrated approaches for enhancing farm productivity.
The third day featured interactive discussions on upcoming project activities, including Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs), allowing participants to share progress and experiences from their respective locations. The sessions also focused on post-harvest operations and value addition, emphasizing strategies to enhance product quality, market orientation, and profitability.
The programme concluded with a valedictory session, marking the successful completion of the training and reaffirming ICAR-IISR’s commitment to strengthening spice value chains through knowledge dissemination, capacity building, and sustainable cultivation practices.
