CSSRI in collaboration with Syngenta India will conduct joint research and development projects on soil salinity management and improving crop productivity, through sustainable agricultural practices.

Syngenta India recently announced two critical MoUs it has signed with government institutions to help farmers enhancing crop productivity and promoting diversified sustainable agriculture practices, Syngenta India signed multiple Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs), aiming to benefit the farmers of Haryana.

Susheel Kumar, MD & Country Head, Syngenta India, signed two MoUs with ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI) and Choudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) respectively.

The MoU with CSSRI is focused on promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improving soil health and resilience in salt-affected areas, while the MoU with Choudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) aims to promote diversified sustainable farming systems for improving productivity and working towards promoting diversified sustainable agriculture practices.

Susheel Kumar, Country Head and MD, Syngenta India, said, “Both the MoUs mark a significant step towards strengthening our collaborations with experts in the agriculture domain. Innovations are at the core of our functioning to effectively meet the challenges of a changing world, from climate change, soil erosion and biodiversity loss to the demands of farmers and the wider society. Since our contribution is a combined effort, we believe in taking all stakeholders along to make agriculture in India a model of sustainability and prosperity of farmers.”

After the exchange of MoU, Prof BR Kamboj, Vice Chancellor of CCSHAU, Hisar, said, “As a premier university dedicated to agriculture research and education, we are pleased to join hands with Syngenta India, one of the world’s leading agriculture companies, to promote diversified sustainable farming systems for improving productivity.”

Kumar added, “The need of the hour is to adopt a multifaceted approach by engaging all stakeholders to meet the challenge of increasing farm productivity. “We believe in a partnership approach and we have been collaborating proactively with public institutions, growers as well as non-government organizations in India”. As per the MoU, CCSHAU and Syngenta India would work together to achieve the common aim to develop skills of stakeholders, promote the use of ICT-driven tools and technologies to enhance decision making through accurate, reliable and timely information for agricultural research and sharing the output with the farmers, he explained further.

They will also collaborate to implement projects related to capacity building of rural youth in agriculture and allied sciences, safe use of crop protection chemicals and adoption of new technologies, etc., through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Agriculture Diploma Technical Schools, Farmers Groups and other institutes of the university under Syngenta’s I RISE (Inculcating Rural India Skill Enhancement) initiative.

Dr RK Yadav, Director, ICAR-CSSRI, Karnal, while interacting with media persons on the occasion, said, “We in collaboration with Syngenta India will conduct joint research and development projects on soil salinity management and improving crop productivity, through sustainable agricultural practices.”

Kumar further explained that as per the terms and references of the MoU with ICAR-CSSRI, capacity building and training programs would also be conducted for farmers, researchers, and extension workers in the areas of soil salinity management, crop protection, and sustainable agriculture. Development of joint publications, presentations, and dissemination of research outcomes to the broader scientific community and stakeholders will also be done by us”.

Additionally, CSSRI will offer internship opportunities to interns sponsored by Syngenta, allowing them to work with eminent scientists and enhance their expertise in soil health and salinity management.

On his maiden trip, Global CEO Syngenta, Jeff Rowe on applauded India’s strides in agriculture while participating in field demonstrations and visiting different programs to reinforce the company’s commitment to Indian farmers, youth and rural communities. Rowe announced the launch of Syngenta’s I-RISE (Inculcating Rural India Skill Enhancement) to train 1 lakh youth to prepare them for various agriculture jobs. During his day-long trip he also joined field demonstration for Climate Smart Agriculture project for Haryana, interacted with farmers in Karnal and participated in drone demonstration for spraying of crop protection solutions.

Rowe elaborated on the I-RISE initiative, which supports eight Sustainable Development Goals, describing it as a “safety net for rural prosperity in India.” He emphasized that the program focuses on training and engaging rural youth in agriculture to curb migration from villages and tackle the growing challenge of a dwindling skilled farm workforce. Under I-RISE, rural youth under 35, with at least a class 10 education and farming experience, participate in a comprehensive program that includes 30 days of classroom training followed by a two-month internship. Afterward, they have the opportunity to pursue advanced training or seek employment within the agricultural supply chain, micro-business, or farming activities. The program is built on the 3Es approach: Educate youth in agriculture through training and mentorship; Engage them through employment and entrepreneurship opportunities; and elevate their livelihood income.

On another note, Rowe emphasized Syngenta Group’s commitment as the world’s leading agricultural technology partner to transforming agriculture through customized solutions that empower farmers globally to adopt regenerative practices for the benefit of farmers, society, and the planet. During his visit to a farm in Karnal, he highlighted the Climate Smart Agriculture project as an affirmation to Syngenta’s dedication to sustainability.

Susheel Kumar, MD & Country Head of Syngenta India, provided further insights into the project, stating, “The project addresses the climate change challenges affecting rice production in Haryana and Punjab. The project includes soil health analysis to optimize fertilizer use, resulting in a reduction of 100 kg of urea per acre. Additionally, crop residue management is a key focus, with technologies like the Happy Seeder eliminating the harmful practice of burning crop residues – a significant issue in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, where approximately 23 million tons of residue are burned annually.”

He revealed that initially expected to cover four key crops in India – chilis, tomatoes, groundnuts and grapes – such is the effectiveness of the product that it will likely be rolled out to cover dozens more. Providing India’s growers with reliable disease control solutions will help bolster local economies and export markets, as chili vegetables alone make up more than a third of the country’s total spice exports, he said.

In their concerted stride towards mitigating the effects of climate change, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Syngenta Foundation India (SFI), and Syngenta India Pvt. Ltd. have signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Foundation Day of ICAR. The collaboration aims to enhance training and capacity-building programs for farmers and rural youth, focusing on climate-resilient agriculture practices and agricultural skill training through ICAR’s extensive network of National Research Institutes, Regional Stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and Agricultural Universities.

Under this agreement, ICAR institutes and KVKs will actively participate in training programs organized by SFI and Syngenta India and vice versa. The KVKs would extend these learnings to a wider farmers’ base through their extensive network. The collaboration will focus on capacity building and extension activities, including the adoption of climate-resilient agriculture practices, safe and proper use of crop protection chemicals, and the use of precision agriculture tools such as drones, IT, IoT, and AI-based techniques.

Dr Himanshu Pathak, Director General, ICAR, said, “This partnership is a major milestone in our efforts to equip farmers and rural youth with the necessary skills and knowledge for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture. By leveraging the strengths of ICAR, Syngenta Foundation, and Syngenta India, we can reach the grassroots level and make a substantial impact.”

In fact, the objectives of this MoU align with Syngenta’s new sustainability commitments, which focus on: Higher yields, lower impact; Regenerate soil and nature; Improve rural prosperity; and Sustainable operations. Syngenta India has been working extensively on climate-resilient practices including soil health, regenerative agriculture, precision farming and possesses in-built capacities to extend the knowledge through the network of Agri Entrepreneurs along with SFI.

Dr K C Ravi, Chief Sustainability Officer, Syngenta India Pvt Ltd highlighted how this MoU was also in sync with Syngenta’s unique I Rise (Inculcate Rural India Skill Enhancement) initiative, designed to engage rural youth in agriculture and provide them appropriate skills and help them to explore dignified and sustainable income earning opportunities in agriculture sector. This program was initiated with the pilot project in 2023 to train 1000 rural youth in 3Es approach i.e., Educate youth in agriculture through the training and mentoring program, engage them in Agri sector through employment, entrepreneurship, or by becoming a lead farmer and elevate their livelihood income.

Rajendra Jog, Executive Director, Syngenta Foundation India, highlighted the collaboration’s potential, stating, “Over the years, we have developed a huge network of agri-entrepreneurs (AEs) who are trained in modern agriculture practices and extend their knowledge and knowhow to millions of farmers across the country. Our partnership with ICAR and KVKs will enable us to leverage our network of AEs to extend comprehensive training to many more farmers and rural youth.”

The partnership also aims to promote efficient agronomic practices, support KVKs, agri-entrepreneurs, dealers, distributors, and farmers through awareness and education programs, and enhance mechanization solutions in selected clusters. The parties will explore the use of AI and ML techniques to provide expert advisory services to farmers, helping them optimize input usage and reduce costs.

The debut of SapRaiseTM Nursery in collaboration with OM Gayatri Global Seedlings marks a significant milestone in agricultural innovation in Nashik and Pune district. This hi-tech nursery will act as an Excellence Centre in seedlings production and is an outcome of the company’s strategic partnership with Syngenta’s Young Plant Raisers (YPR).

SapRaiseTM support is designed to nurture early crop establishment for a large number of vegetable farmers in Nashik and Pune, which is crucial for enhanced crop quality and yield potential. “Our Excellence Center will provide growers with high-quality, healthy seedlings, ensuring that they have the best possible beginning to achieve superior crop yields and enhanced income”, informed Susheel. Nashik initiative has been launched on a pilot basis, Syngenta India plans to later expand the SapRaiseTM Excellence Center across the country, aiming to benefit farmers from all states.

In addition to boosting business quality, the Excellence Center will extend the sales reach of existing YPR partners, enabling growers in untapped and new geographical areas to access best quality seedlings. With the increasing role of drones in empowering farmers, this initiative aims to equip farmers of Haryana with benefits and implications of modern farming practices.

Reiterating its commitment to empowering farmers, Susheel Kumar, Country Head and MD of Syngenta India, a leading Swiss based agri-science company, on Saturday applauded the ease and speed with which Haryana farmers have adopted use of drones and other technologies including CropWise Growers App. Joining a drone flying demonstration by Syngenta trained drone pilots at the Integrated Beekeeping Development Centre (IBDC) in Kurukshetra, Kumar said Haryana was poised for faster growth with a mix of enabling policies and progressive vision of farmers. IBDC is an Indo-Israel agriculture project established by the Department of Horticulture, Govt. of Haryana for the development of beekeeping in Haryana. Kumar visited the facility and expressed keen interest in the activities of IBDC. The support to IBDC is in keeping with Syngenta’s commitment to sustainability and conservation of pollinators.

A native of Haryana, who loves to call himself ‘son of the soil’ Kumar said Syngenta will continue to support initiatives of the Haryana government to empower farmers through futuristic farming techniques and practices. “Farmers safety is at the heart of Syngenta and towards this we carry out stewardship activities to train farmers on safe spraying,” Kumar added.

Syngenta’s R&D Center is a 25 years old state-of-the-art facility in Karnal carrying out breeding activities of seeds like Okra, Watermelon, Tomato and cucumber. “Through its continued emphasis on high-quality research, the Centre is dedicated to providing the finest varieties for best yields and economic gains of farmers in Haryana and north India,” said Kumar while demonstrating to the farmers the various activities being carried out here.

Later, Kumar also joined a group of farmers who demonstrated drone flying. “Under our CSR program, in collaboration with Syngenta Foundation of India, we launched a drone pilots training program under which we have trained 100 drone pilots in Haryana including 18 women, from across 16 districts of Haryana. This is a game-changer for it will not only provide new employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for the youth, but will also enhance efficiency for our farmers, and help in their yields. It augurs well for the future of farming in Haryana, as drone helps in precision spraying of crop protection solutions saving resources and time,” Kumar said.

Drone spraying initiative involves deploying an impressive fleet of 500 agricultural drones across the country, making it the largest agri-drone fleet in India.

In a demonstration of the significance of drones in agriculture, Syngenta India launched an awareness drive by simultaneously using 100 drones across Punjab and Haryana to spray Incipio, its new crop protection solution. The Syngenta drone yantra is travelling in Punjab and Haryana and is targeting to cover approx. 10,000 farmers across multiple districts about the benefits of drone spraying.

Based on the new age PLINAZOLIN® technology, these products promise effective defence against various pests, ensuring improved yields and crop quality. These are developed to efficiently meet the challenges arising from climate change and pest resistance, which are responsible for major crop losses every year. During the launch event, over 600 farmers from Macchiwara in the Ludhiana district participated in the demonstration.

He mentioned the launch of drone spray solutions and the successful implementation of commercial spray services across several states, including Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. He said that 2643 acres have been sprayed commercially so far using Syngenta’s drone technology. In 2022, Syngenta’s Drone Yatra covered 13 states completing a milestone of 17,000 km to create awareness of drone spraying among farmers.

“We aim to strengthen and expand the drone ecosystem by collaborating with manufacturers, suppliers, and technology providers. This involves working closely with industry experts to improve drone capabilities, enhance operational efficiency, and address any technical limitations,” he added.

Kumar is an MBA in Agribusiness from Symbiosis Institute of International Business and a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Operations and Related Sciences from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University.

Kumar hails from Haryana and has a marketing strategy background. He has been associated with Syngenta for almost twelve years. Recently, he has completed an international assignment in Switzerland, where he contributed to the global strategies of the company as well as projects for commercial excellence.

Syngenta India has appointed Susheel Kumar as the new country head and managing director of the company. Kumar takes over from Rafael Del Rio, who served as managing director for the past four years.

Del Rio has been appointed as non-executive chairman of Syngenta India, one of the biggest agricultural companies in the world, selling seeds and crop protection chemicals. Kumar hails from Haryana and has been in the company for the last 12 years.
