Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) inaugurated the Technology Demonstration Facility at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khordha, Odisha on March 10, 2022. Ajaya Kumar Dash, Head, KVK, Khordha briefed about the new facility. The facility will have demonstration units for mushroom production, food processing & value-addition and poultry production. It will also be used for imparting the skill training to the farmers and farm women.

The DG was accompanied by Dr Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science); Dr BP Mohanty, ADG (Inland Fisheries), ICAR along with Dr SK Swain, Director, ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar and other Senior Officials of ICAR-CIFA and KVK, Khordha.

While interacting with the farmers and farm women in the Exhibition organised at the KVK, Khordha, Dr Mohapatra urged the KVK for facilitating the Self-Help Groups to improve their marketing skills and organise them to form as collectives like Farmers’ Producers’ Organisations to scale-up their operations. Underlining the Government of India’s target of creating 10,000 FPOs by 2025, the Director General emphasised that the KVKs would play a key role in mobilising the farmers and providing technical support.

During his interaction with the Scientists and Staff Members of ICAR-CIFA, he urged for focusing on the outreach & effective communication of the scientific research to the stakeholders and reorienting the research priorities for bringing out innovations that can enhance the farmers’ income.

Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala will inaugurate the ‘Sagar Parikrama’, organised by The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India and National Fisheries Development Board along with Department of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat, Indian Coast Guard, Fishery Survey of India, Gujarat Maritime Board and fishermen representatives on February 5, 2022.

The Parikrama, starting from Mandvi at Shyamiji Krishna Varma Memorial, Gujarat, as a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava’, is an endeavour to know the problems of Coastal fisher folk. It will be organised in other districts of Gujarat and other State/UTs in subsequent phases.

Raghavjibhai Patel, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cow-breeding, Government of Gujarat; Jitubhai Chaudhari, State Minister of Kalpsar and Fisheries; Jatindra Nath Swain, Secretary (Fisheries), Government of India; Nalin Upadhyay, Secretary (Fisheries), Govt of Gujarat and senior officials of Department of Fisheries, Govt of India, National Fisheries Development Board, Govt of Gujarat, Fishery Survey of India, Gujarat Maritime Board, and Indian Coast Guard are likely to grace the occasion.

The Parikrama shall be accompanied by the state fisheries officials, fishermen representatives, fish-farmers entrepreneurs, stakeholders, professionals, officials and scientists from across the nation.

During the event, certificates /sanctions related to the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampadha scheme (PMMSY), KCC & State Scheme shall be awarded to the progressive fishermen, especially coastal fishermen, fishers and fish farmers, young fishery entrepreneurs etc. Literature on PMMSY scheme, state schemes, FIDF, KCC etc. shall be popularised among fishers through print media, electronic media, videos and digital campaigns with jingles. A song on Sagar Parikrama shall also be launched in the contest of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava’.

The journey of ‘Sagar Parikrama’ shall focus on the sustainable balance between the utilization of marine fisheries resources for food security of nation and livelihoods of coastal fisher communities and protection of marine ecosystems.

The Sagar Parikrama is proposed to be conducted in all coastal states/UTs through a pre-decided sea route down right from Gujarat, Diu, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands to have interaction programme with fishermen, fisher communities and stakeholders in these locations and districts to know the problems of coastal fisher folk.

The first leg of ‘Sagar Parikrama’ shall start on February 5, 2022, from Mandvi and end at Porbandar on February 6, 2022. The entire distance will be covered from the coastline of Mandvi on the coast of the Arabian Sea in the Kutch district of Gujarat, situated at the estuary where the river Rukmavati meets the Gulf of Kutch.

According to the experts, intensification and diversification has added to the risk factors of the spread of new and emerging aquatic diseases in aquaculture

Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India organised a webinar on National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases: A Step towards Establishing Disease Governance System in India. The event was attended by more than 150 participants including officials of the Department of Fisheries, ICAR institutes, GoI and fisheries officials of different States/UTs, faculties from state agriculture, veterinary and fisheries universities, entrepreneurs, scientists, farmers, hatchery owners, students and stakeholders from aquaculture industry across the country.

The welcome address was given by IA Siddiqui, Fisheries Development Commissioner, DoF along with the introduction of the theme of the webinar and the distinguished panellists Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary (Inland Fisheries); Dr Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR, New Delhi; Dr Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor (Research and Patents), Nitte University, Mangaluru; Dr AG Ponniah, Former Emeritus Scientist and Former Discipline Leader, WorldFish Centre, Malaysia, Dr KK Lal, Director, ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow; Dr Neeraj Sood, Principal Scientist ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow; V Balasubramaniam, General Secretary, Prawn Farmers’ Federation of India, Bengaluru and other participants.

Shri Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary (Inland Fisheries), in his opening remarks mentioned that aquaculture production through intensification and diversification has added to the risk factors of spread of new and emerging aquatic diseases in aquaculture.

During the technical session, Dr Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR, New Delhi, set the context for the webinar and stated that India is a vast country with state divergent levels of capabilities and fisheries priorities hence surveillance programme for monitoring and controlling spread of diseases of national and international concern has become a primary requirement for effective health management and ultimately for sustainable aquaculture.

Dr Jena further stated that the National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) of India has made its own example in establishing a coordinated surveillance programme for aquaculture.

Dr Neeraj Sood, Principal Scientist ICAR- National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow delivered a detailed presentation on NSPAAD along with the status of the project in the country and the future aims of the project.

Dr Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor, Nitte University, Mangaluru focussed on strategising aquatic animal health management based on disease surveillance through a knowledge filled session. Dr AG Ponniah, Former Emeritus Scientist and Former Discipline Leader, World Fish Centre, Malaysia delivered an informative session on emergency response in case of detection of exotic aquatic diseases and V Balasubramaniam, General Secretary, Prawn Farmers’ Federation of India briefed about the industrial approach and the need of fisheries and aquaculture sector for disease surveillance in shrimp aquaculture.

The webinar concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr SK Dwivedi, Assistant Commissioner, DoF.

India will pitch to become the preferred sourcing partner for the global food processing industry during the fortnight at EXPO2020 Dubai and host various seminars and conferences to deliberate on ways to explore international collaborations and further strengthen its export potential.

The fortnight will showcase India’s prowess in sectors like food processing, horticulture, dairy, fisheries, and organic farming and the vast investment opportunities that it offers.

As part of the key theme – ‘Millets’, the fortnight will witness the millets food festival, the launch of Millets Book, and various seminars focusing on its health and nutritional benefits.

The sector is set to witness increased investment in agricultural infrastructures such as irrigation facilities, warehousing, and cold storage, with global consumption reaching the pre-pandemic level. The fortnight will also see the participation of several senior government officials from India who will be present during the various sessions. The ‘Food, Agriculture and Livelihood’ fortnight will conclude on March 2, 2022.

Discussions were held on training of fish farmers on sustainable practices in Andhra Pradesh

Dr Poonam Malakondaiah, IAS, Special Chief Secretary, Agriculture and Cooperation, AHDD & Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh recently visited the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata for an interface meeting on “Encouraging Fish Culture Technologies in Large Water Bodies with Special Emphasis on Enclosure Culture in Andhra Pradesh”. Dr Malakondaiah was accompanied by K Kanna Babu, Commissioner of Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh.

In her address, Dr Malakondaiah underlined the state activities and Ventures of the Fisheries Sector like Farmer Field Schools in collaboration with state universities and the establishment of a Fisheries University at West Godavari District. She also highlighted the two major areas of concern for the fisheries in Andhra Pradesh, viz., training of farmers on sustainable practices and focusing on the quality of produce rather than quantity. Dr Malakondaiah stressed on the long and sustainable partnership with the ICAR-CIFRI for the development of Inland Fisheries Sector in Andhra Pradesh.

Babu underlined the possibility of partnership with the ICAR-CIFRI in future for promoting the cage culture in the Reservoirs of Andhra Pradesh. He also expressed his concern regarding the low domestic consumption of fishes in Andhra Pradesh even though the State leads in aquaculture production.

Earlier, delivering the welcome address, Dr BK Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, Kolkata briefed the dignitaries about the Institute’s activities and achievements.

The campaign aimed at sensitising the fishers and creating awareness on the climate-smart fisheries management in the changing climate scenario.

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata organised the campaign on “Climate-Smart Inland Fisheries in Coastal Wetland, West Bengal” at the Coastal Wetlands of Bermajur – 1 Village, Sandeshkhali – 2 Block of Sundarbans, West Bengal on December 29, 2021.

Dr Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Principal Investigator, NICRA & HoD, Reservoir and Wetland Fisheries Division, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore highlighted the various issues and innovative adaptation strategies for managing the fisheries of the coastal wetland.

Tapan Sardar, Gram Pradhan, Bermajur – 1, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal appreciated the Institute’s initiative for the development of the Scheduled Caste community through the climate-smart fisheries.

The campaign aimed at sensitising the fishers and creating awareness on the climate-smart fisheries management in the changing climate scenario registered participation by 70 Scheduled Caste Fishers including 20 women.

Experts discuss ways to increase the income of fish farmers

On the third day of 12th Agrovision Summit, a conference was held on the scope of inland fisheries in the Vidarbha region. The event started with the lamp lighting ceremony by Dr Suvarna Chandrappagari, Chief Executive, National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Tage Taki, Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture, Dairy Development, Fisheries, Arunachal Pradesh; Lalchand Kataria, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Dr CD Mayee, Chairman – Advisory Council Agrovision, Ex-Chairman – ASRB (ICAR), Dr Ashish Paturkar, Vice-Chancellor, Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), Nagpur and Ravi Boratkar, MD, MM Activ Sci-Tech Communications, Publisher, MMA publications and Chairperson, Agrovision Foundation among other dignitaries.

Mayee started the conference by mentioning the scope of inland fisheries in the Vidarbha region as there are lot of water holds in the region. He stated that the conference will help farmers in the region to focus on new techniques and come with innovation in aquaculture.

Paturkar in his speech gave an idea about fishery potential in Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli among other regions, which has big ponds. He also mentioned Google mapping and how it has helped to map the entire Vidarbha region for fish cultivation. Talking about the challenges, he said that many regions lack proper fishing techniques and urged stakeholders, ministry and farmers to work in an organised way for the upliftment of the sector. He emphasised maximum utilisation of water bodies, seed production in sufficient quantities, better logistic facilities, procuring good sources and cheaper fish feed, fish production and processing.

Exports of processed fish products is what Paturkar mentioned during the conference. Lastly, he talked about how value addition and collaboration with private players will help fish farmers for a better future.

Dr Chandrappagari in her speech gave an overview of how despite being a drought-prone region things can turn for better by adopting sustainable measures. Mentioning that Vidarbha has a huge potential in the fisheries sector, she urged farmers and stakeholders to adopt certain measures like increasing productivity, procuring quality seeds, following good management practices and upgrading marketing infrastructure. Focus on river ranching, storage facilities, transportation and logistics and adoption of schemes in the Vidarbha region are some of the measures mentioned by Dr Chandrappagari.

Kataria talked about prawn cultivation in Churu district and how the Government of Rajasthan are taking various initiatives to encourage farmers in fish farming and adopt various sustainable measures viz rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation etc.

Taki in his speech thanked the Agrovision team for inviting him where his state will be hugely benefitted from the technologies being showcased at the event. He said, “Arunachal being a hilly terrain, there are a lot of challenges in the region.” He particularly mentioned the right way to implement techniques for sustainable fish farming, balanced use of water bodies and urged the stakeholders for easy earning methods for farmers. Besides, he talked about better logistic facilities and technologies to enhance fish feed. He particularly mentioned certain fish species on the verge of extinction despite less pollution in the state.

Lastly, he urged farmers to take up responsibilities and form self-help groups to sustain themselves in the long run.

Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Tribal Affairs stressed for the holistic development of reservoirs in Odisha

Bishweswar Tudu, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Tribal Affairs recently inaugurated the ICAR-CIFRI Pen Culture Demonstration-cum-Reservoir Fisheries Enhancement Program at Balidiha, Mayurbhanj District, Odisha. Tudu said, “The Department of Fisheries, Government of Odisha and the fishers should join hands with the ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore for the holistic development of the reservoirs in Odisha.”

The minister stressed disseminating the benefits of the reservoir fisheries development program to the local community. Subrata Dash, District Fisheries Officer, Mayurbhanj District, Odisha underlined the various schemes being run by the state government for fisheries development.

Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Dr BK Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore briefed about the activities being carried out by the Institute in Odisha. He also urged the fishers of Balidiha Dam to work together in a participatory model for the success of the reservoir fisheries enhancement program.

About 250 fishermen participated in the program.
