In a significant step toward preserving and promoting Telangana’s horticultural legacy, the state has filed an application seeking a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the renowned Balanagar custard apple. Known for its naturally sweet pulp, minimal seeds, thick rind, and long shelf life, the fruit is predominantly cultivated across Mahbubnagar, Vikarabad, and Rangareddy districts.
This marks Telangana’s 19th GI application, and the first for a custard apple variety from the region. The application has been submitted by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha of Resolute4IP on behalf of Pomal Farmer Producer Company Limited, Balanagar Farmer Producer Company Limited, and The Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society, with funding support from NABARD.
The effort has been technically anchored by Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTGHU), under the leadership of Dr. Saidaiah Pidigam, who played a central role in documenting the fruit’s unique agro-morphological traits and coordinating with growers at the grassroots level.
“Securing a GI tag will not only help protect the fruit’s identity but also strengthen its brand in domestic and international markets,” said Saha, noting that the initiative is part of a broader campaign to seek GI status for 6–8 more horticulture and handicraft products from the state in the near future.
SKLTGHU Vice Chancellor Dr. Danda Raji Reddy emphasized the university’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the state’s heritage crops. “We’re actively working on six more GI applications that are currently under field investigation. The goal is to secure due recognition for Telangana’s rich horticultural biodiversity,” he stated.
Once approved, the GI tag for Balanagar custard apple is expected to boost farmer incomes, ensure legal protection, and enhance market visibility for one of the region’s most iconic fruits.
