Odisha and United Nations explore deeper collaboration to advance SDGs and climate-resilient development

Discussions focus on agriculture, renewable energy, tourism and SDG-Driven growth initiatives in Odisha

In a significant step towards strengthening international collaboration, Stefan Priesner, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, met Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar to discuss expanding cooperation across key development sectors.

The high-level meeting focused on enhancing partnerships between the United Nations and the Government of Odisha in areas including agriculture, renewable energy, innovation, tourism, and sustainable development.

During the discussions, Singh Deo highlighted Odisha’s growing contribution to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, underlining the state’s strong emphasis on agricultural development and rural prosperity. He noted that the government continues to prioritise initiatives aimed at increasing farmers’ income, promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices, and strengthening value chains to improve rural livelihoods.

Both sides also explored opportunities to position Odisha as a leading hub for renewable energy and innovation. Discussions covered potential collaboration in clean energy, technology transfer, and capacity-building initiatives. The UN delegation acknowledged Odisha’s progress in energy transition efforts and expressed interest in supporting future sustainability-focused projects in the state.

Tourism and heritage conservation also featured prominently in the meeting. Odisha’s rich cultural and historical legacy, including UNESCO-recognised heritage sites and emerging tourism destinations such as Ranipur-Jharial and Harishankar, were discussed as important pillars for sustainable tourism growth. The state reiterated its commitment to preserving tribal heritage and promoting Odisha as a globally recognised cultural destination.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through deeper collaboration between the United Nations and the Odisha government. Both sides agreed to work together on initiatives focused on inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and long-term development planning.

The engagement reflects Odisha’s increasing focus on global partnerships to accelerate economic growth while ensuring sustainable and inclusive development across sectors.
