India is strengthening its position in the fast-expanding global organic marketplace, where demand has surged from $ 112 billion in 2019 to $ 147.49 billion in 2023, according to FiBL and IFOAM. A new CRISIL study estimates India’s domestic organic market at Rs 16,800 crore ($ 2 billion) in FY24—representing 1.4 per cent of the global market—and highlights rising export momentum under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP). Tamil Nadu alone has brought more than 32,430 hectares under organic management, supported by 22,145 certified producers, including 103 grower groups tracked through APEDA’s Tracenet platform.
India’s organic export basket has widened significantly, with Tamil Nadu supplying products ranging from coconut milk and mango purée to specialty teas and spices, catering to premium markets across the US, EU, Australia, Great Britain, Chile, Mexico, and Canada. Nationally, exports of NPOP-certified products reached $ 665.97 million in 2024-25, with strong contributions from Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
To catalyse this growth, the Government has rolled out the 8th edition of the NPOP from July 2025, with upgraded standards emphasising transparency, traceability and farmer-friendly compliance. India is also expanding global market access through a new wave of Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRAs): the MRA with Taiwan is already operational, while the MRA with Australia came into force on 24 September 2025. These partnerships, coupled with India’s designation as Partner Country for Biofach 2026 and participation at global platforms such as Natural Products Expo West (USA), are positioning Indian organic exporters for accelerated scale-up. Nationwide outreach, training, and capacity-building programmes are further preparing producers and certification bodies to meet emerging international demand.
Together, these measures—strengthened standards, expanded market access, diversified product portfolios, and rising farmer participation—signal India’s intent to become a far more influential player in the global organic value chain.
