The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully facilitated the maiden export of 500 kg of India’s Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Indi and Puliyankudi Limes to the United Kingdom, marking a key milestone in expanding the global footprint of India’s unique horticultural produce.
The consignment — comprising 350 kg of Indi Lime from Vijayapura district, Karnataka, and 150 kg of Puliyankudi Lime from Tenkasi district, Tamil Nadu — was air-shipped to the UK on 28 October 2025.
A flag-off event was held with the participation of senior officials from APEDA, the Department of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka, the Karnataka Lime Board, and the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Speaking on the occasion, Abhishek Dev, Chairman, APEDA, commended the collaborative effort that made the first shipment possible.
“Exports of GI-tagged products reinforce India’s regional identity, strengthen farmer incomes, and position our country as a supplier of premium-quality produce in overseas markets. APEDA remains committed to enabling market access and branding for such unique products globally,” he stated.
Senior officials representing the State Horticulture Departments conveyed that the achievement reflects strong coordination between farmer groups, exporters, state agencies, and APEDA.
The Indi Lime is renowned for its high juice content, distinctive aroma, and balanced acidity, making it suitable for both culinary and medicinal applications. The Puliyankudi Lime, recognized with a GI tag in April 2025, offers around 55 per cent juice yield, thin peel, and high vitamin C and antioxidant content — characteristics that have earned Tenkasi the reputation of being the “Lemon City” of Tamil Nadu.
This landmark export underscores India’s strategic push toward promoting GI-certified horticultural excellence, supporting premium market access, and empowering farmers through value addition and global branding.
