Building on its legacy of success, Sahyadri Farms is now embarking on an exciting new chapter with citrus farming. The introduction of the Tango Mandarin variety is set to create substantial economic opportunities for farmers, thanks to its impressive high-yielding potential and the growing demand in the market. This initiative is poised to transform Maharashtra’s citrus industry, a state where over 135,000 hectares are dedicated to citrus cultivation. With approximately 170,000 farmers and an annual production of 1.8 million tonnes, Maharashtra is already a powerhouse in citrus production. The Tango mandarin’s introduction will elevate the sector, giving farmers access to a premium fruit that promises strong profitability and marketability.
” Once the Tango mandarin completes the Plant Quarantine process in August 2025, it will be made available to farmers through Sahyadri’s Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), empowering them with access to this high-demand variety”,said Pankaj Nathe, Senior Manager, Farm Operation, Sahyadri Farms. ”Beyond benefiting farmers directly, this initiative is also expected to reduce India’s dependency on imported premium citrus and processed products, strengthening the local agricultural economy and contributing to the nation’s self-reliance. Since February 2025, 30 farmers from citrus growing areas have been deployed at the demonstration plots to promote awareness in Tango, ” he added.
