Odisha to boost milk procurement capacity from 5 Lakh to 10 Lakh Liters Per day with new “Market Support Program”.

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, virtually inaugurated a series of impactful initiatives in the dairy and livestock sector in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. Spearheaded by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, these programs aim to enhance rural livelihoods, improve livestock productivity and address critical nutritional challenges in the region.

During the event, the President of India inaugurated the Cattle Induction Program in Mayurbhanj under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission. This initiative included the distribution of 3,000 high-genetic-merit cattle to identified beneficiaries in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission scheme of DAHD, a Productivity Enhancement project is being implemented by the National Dairy Development Board in Mayurbhanj with an allocation of Rs 37.45 crores over five years. The program seeks to enhance milk production, strengthen rural incomes, and promote sustainable livestock practices.

 As part of the event, the Gift Milk Program was also launched. Designed to combat malnutrition and improve the health of the children, this program will provide 200 ml of flavoured milk fortified with Vitamins A and D to approximately 1,200 schoolchildren in Mayurbhanj district. While virtually inaugurating the initiative, the President of India noted the positive impact of such programs on nutrition and education, expressing hope that such efforts would serve as a model for similar interventions nationwide.

 Additionally, the President launched a Market Support Program to strengthen milk procurement, processing and marketing in the State of Odisha. This initiative is aimed at increasing milk procurement capacity in the state from 5 lakh litres per day to 10 lakh litres per day. This program focuses on building branding and distribution networks to ensure better returns for the farmers.

In her address, the President Droupadi Murmu commended the efforts of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in transforming the dairy sector through forward-looking policies and innovative interventions. She highlighted India’s leadership in milk production, which has grown at an impressive 6% annual rate over the last decade, surpassing global trends. The President also emphasized the need for adopting advanced technologies, such as Artificial Insemination and sex-sorted semen, to enhance livestock productivity and increase the profitability of dairy farming.

Union Minister, Rajeev Ranjan Singh also addressed the gathering and emphasised upon the success of the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, which has made significant contributions towards breed improvement and productivity enhancement of the indigenous bovine breeds. The Union Minister also lauded the efforts of DAHD and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for driving rural economic growth and providing consistent support for strategic dairy initiatives while improving market connectivity for farmers.

Mohan Charan Majhi, Chief Minister of Odisha, highlighted the vital role of livestock in fostering sustainable rural livelihoods. He emphasized the state’s commitment to advancing the dairy and livestock sectors through innovative and farmer-centric programs.

Rajeev Ranjan aka Lalan Singh of the Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) has got the Ministry of Panchayati Raj; and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. BJP’s Giriraj Singh handled the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, and Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in the previous government.

Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, born 24 January 1955 is an Indian politician who serving as 11th Minister of Panchayati Raj, 3rd Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying since 2024. He also the Member of Parliament representing Munger in the 17th Lok Sabha from Janata Dal (United). He was the national party president of JDU (Janta Dal United) from 31 July 2021 to 29 December 2023. He was also the former JD(U) Bihar unit President.

 Nadda is serving as the 34th Minister of Health, 25th Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers since 2024.

BJP Chief Jagat Prakash Nadda has been given the charge of Health Ministry in Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led coalition government. Nadda was Health Minister in PM Modi’s first term. Nadda, 63, additionally has also been made Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Nadda, who holds a degree in law, started his political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students’ wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He became president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing, in 1991.

J.P. Nadda, born 2 December 1960, is an Indian lawyer and politician who serving as the 34th Minister of Health, 25th Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers since 2024 and 11th President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2020 and the member of the Rajya Sabha representing Gujarat since 2024.

Dr Jitendra Singh urged Dhami to promote Agri-tech start-ups in the State to arrest the large-scale migration of youth

Union Minister of State (I/C) Science & Technology; Minister of State (I/C) Earth Sciences; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh recently had a meeting with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, during which, among others issues, he impressed upon the CM to promote agri-tech start-ups, since Uttarakhand had a vast potential for it. He also updated Dhami about the Aroma Mission launched by CSIR in the Union Ministry of Science & Technology.

The two leaders also discussed implementation of various centrally funded schemes in the State & the current affairs related to the State.

Dr Jitendra Singh urged Dhami to promote agri-tech start-ups in the State to arrest the large-scale migration of youth and promised all help from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The Union Minister said that the geography and climatic conditions in Himalayan states like Uttarakhand favour the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants and these can be developed into agri-tech and aromatic enterprises. Referring to the huge success of CSIR supported Aroma Mission in Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister said, the same can be replicated in a big way in Devbhoomi.

This strategically important visit came in the backdrop of the ongoing global fertiliser crisis

In a first of its kind initiative, a high level delegation led by Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilisers visited Jordan from May 13-15, 2022 with the objective of securing fertilisers and raw materials, both for short and long term. This strategically important visit came in the backdrop of the ongoing global fertiliser crisis.

Dr Mandaviya stated that the Jordan visit proved to be path breaking in terms of ensuring supply of Phosphatic and Potassic fertilisers to India. MOUs were signed with Jordan Phosphate Mining Company (JPMC) for supplies of 30 LMT Rock Phosphate, 2.50 LMT DAP, 1 LMT phosphoric acid for the current year with the Indian public, cooperative and private sector companies. India has also signed a long term MOU for 5 years with Jordan for annual supplies of 2.75 LMT of MoP which will uniformly increase every year up to 3.25 LMT, he added. “These supplies will be crucial for assured fertiliser supply for the ensuing cropping seasons in India”, the Union Minister highlighted. 

The Indian delegation led by the Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers visited the JPMC mines and Phosphoric Acid production facilities set up by JIFCO and Indo-Jordan Company. The delegation was warmly greeted by all the Indian engineers and labour force working in these facilities. They appreciated the visit by the Minister which has been first of its kind and will go a long way in increasing their morale while working on the foreign soil.
