Panellists discuss ways to uplift the farmer community and urged the ministries for better policies in place

The last day of 12th Agrovision had a panel discussion on ‘Enhancing GDP and Farmers Income.’ The panel discussion had Narayan Tatu Rane, Minister For Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Nitin Gadkari, Chief Patron, Agrovision, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, G Chandrashekhar Aiyar, Economist, Senior Journalist, Policy Commentator with a passion for agriculture; Dr N Persuraman, Principal Scientist, MSSRF; Ajay Vir Jakhar, Chairman, Bharat Krishak Samaj; Dr Agyeya Tripathi, Finance Expert; Sujit Sahgal, author; Dr Ashish Paturkar, Vice-Chancellor, Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), Nagpur; Devendra Parekh, Past President, Vidarbha Economic Development Council (VED); Girish Gandhi, Organiser, Agrovision; Krishan Bir Chaudhary, President, Bharatiya Krishak Samaj; Ajay Vir Jakhar, Chairman, Bharat Krishi Samaj and Ravi Boratkar, MD, MM Activ Sci-Tech Communications, Publisher, MMA publications and Chairperson, Agrovision Foundation and Milind Kokje, Chief Editor, Agrospectrum.

The session started with Gadkari discussing the challenges faced by the farmers in the Vidarbha region and how Government of India has been proactively finding solutions to help the farmer community. He mentioned ethanol-based fuel produced from sugarcane, the use of drones in farmlands and nano urea where the wastage of it will minimal.

Discussing the various opportunities in the agriculture sector with MSME Minister and Agriculture Minister, Gadkari added, “We need to work on preparing a policy on (use of) drones in the farm sector. Drones are related to agro and MSME can generate about 50 lakh jobs in the rural sector in one year. Besides, it will benefit farmers too.”

Ajay Vir Jakhar talked about the need for a modified agri policy in place that will be helpful for farmers. He urged the ministers for better coordination among all the stakeholders for the upliftment of the sector and developing the food system in the entire country.

Chandrasekhar talked about proper training mechanisms in the MSME sector, educational programmes in the food processing sector through a cluster approach in hedging for commodity price risk management. According to him, there should be a focus to reduce price volatility, on growing cereal pulses, need to relook at import-export policy and all stakeholders should work together. The government need to impose a duty on import, price risk management on MSME, provision on MSP and import-export policy, which is what Chandrasekhar mentioned at the event.

Tripathi mentioned about the need to upgrade agri entrepreneurship, promote FPOs. He urged the farmers to act as managers. Mentioning that though there are policies in place, there is a lack of implementation which the government needs to look into. Schemes are many but proper awareness is needed for the upliftment of the sector. Apart from this, he also mentioned setting up SDG goals.

Rane opined about how his ministry will look into the food processing sector, on how an increase in agri GDP is going to have a positive impact on farmers. He assured that his ministry will look into the farmer’s and hoped for positive outcomes for the sector.

The dairy sector and its upliftment was the main focus on day two of 12th Agrovision. The seminar was inaugurated with a lamp lighting ceremony by Nitin Gadkari, Chief Patron, Agrovision, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, in the presence of Sunil Chhatrapal Kedar, Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, Sports and Youth Welfare, Government of Maharashtra; Meenesh C Shah, Chairman, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Dr Ashish Paturkar, Vice Chancellor, Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), Nagpur along with Ravi Boratkar, MD, MM Activ Sci-Tech Communications, Publisher, MMA publications and Chairperson, Agrovision Foundation and Dr CD Mayee, Chairman-Advisory Council Agrovision, Ex-Chairman- ASRB (ICAR).

The event started with Gadkari talking about bringing in a milk revolution in the Vidarbha region using techniques that can be sustainable for farmers in the long run.

This was followed by a speech by Shah giving a glance about what role in NDDB is playing to improve the dairy sector in Vidarbha and adjoining areas. He said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a huge toll on the dairy sector; however, the industry was quick to bounce back as there was a huge demand for milk-related products.”

He recalled the government initiatives for the upliftment of the dairy sector in Marathwada and Vidarbha and procurement of milk from various villages in the region. He also mentioned how farmers are being benefitted from the money being transferred to the bank accounts.

Shah took notice of the reproductive health of cattle, livestock health, upgrading of infrastructure related to gene modification, semen analysis, IVF, training being provided by NDDB to farmers, animal nutrition and what role NDDB is playing in this regard. He talked about conserving green fodder in the form of silage to ensure a regular supply of quality fodder to bovines, especially during the lean season and farmers are being trained for the same.

A special mention of women dairy farmers and their increased participation was made by the NDDB chairman.

Kedar in his speech emphasised two major things, marketing of milk-based products and processing of milk. He informed the audience about how the Govt of Maharashtra ensured that balancing the demand-supply gap helped the dairy sector during COVID. His talk revolved around new technologies being promoted to help dairy farmers, to take the dairy industry in the Vidarbha region to newer heights.

The four-day event will see a congregation of 400 exhibitors and farmers from in and around Vidarbha region. 

12th Agrovision, India’s Premier Agri Summit, was launched at Reshimbagh ground in Nagpur. The four-day event from December 24-27, 2021 is witnessing a congregation of farmers, policymakers, stakeholders, scientists from different parts of Maharashtra and adjoining states.
 
Present on the occasion were Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Agriculture Minister, Nitin Gadkari, Chief patron Agrovision, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Sanjay Agarwal, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, the Guest of Honour Dr Ashwath Narayan CN, Minister for Electronics, IT, BT and S&T Higher Education, Skill Development Entrepreneurship and Livelihood, Government of Karnataka, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Former Minister of Energy, New & Renewable Energy, Govt of Maharashtra and Dr CD Mayee, Chairman-Advisory Council Agrovision, Ex-Chairman- ASRB (ICAR).

The event started with a lamp lighting ceremony by Tomar along with all the dignitaries. Ravi Boratkar, MD, MM Activ Sci-Tech Communications, Publisher, MMA publications and Chairperson, Agrovision Foundation, while welcoming the guests talked about Agrovision’s journey so far and how farmers are continuing to be benefitted from the successive events held so far.

Agarwal in his speech talked about the PM’s vision of enhancing farmers’ income, creating farmer’s database and utilising post-harvest DPR. Gadkari talked about how ethanol from sugarcane is going to be the future fuel in agri pumps and the transport sector replacing petrol and diesel. He emphasised ideating knowledge, entrepreneurship, successful practice and coming out with solutions for the farmer community.
 
The theme for this year’s event is ‘Transforming Agriculture through Technology Innovations.’

On December 25, 2021, a conference will be organised on dairy, its opportunities in the Vidarbha region.

The four-day event will see a congregation
