10 foreign missions from different countries along with various International organisations attend the conference

On the occasion of World Fisheries Day, the Dept. of Fisheries, GoI is organising a Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 which began at Gujarat Science City, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying inaugurated the Special Pavilion and main Exhibition of Global Fisheries Conference India 2023. Minister of States for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Dr Sanjeev K. Balyan, and Dr L Murugan, Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Rajnikant Patel, Ministers of various states, Ambassador of various countries, other dignitaries and heads of various organisations and fisheries research institutes were present in the event.

Parshottam Rupala released the “State Fishes of India Booklet” to encourage each state in India to adopt a fish and conserve its biodiversity. The booklet contains details of 21 fish species adopted as State Fish and declared as State Aquatic Animals. The other key publication released was “Handbook on Fisheries Statistics year 2022” which aims at providing key data points and performance indicators for the Fisheries sector making accurate and reliable fisheries data available to all.

Further, Rupala distributed Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS) claim cheques (Rs 5 lakhs each) to beneficiaries /legal heirs from the states of Odisha and Puducherry, Kisan Credit Card (KCC) to eligible beneficiaries with the loan amount of Rs 35 thousand to Rs 3 lakhs for beneficiaries from Gujarat, Green Fuel conversion kit for sustainable development of fisheries sector that included beneficiaries from Kerala and transponders for beneficiaries from Gujarat.

Sagar Mehra Joint Secretary for DoF, highlighted that the Department of Fisheries organised an event of this scale and magnitude for the first time. He said it is a moment of pride for DoF (MoFAH&D, GoI) to host 10 foreign missions from the countries of France, New Zealand, Norway, Australia, Russia, Spain, Zimbabwe, Angola, Brazil and Greece along with International organisations namely Food and Agriculture Organisation (UN-FAO), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Bay of Bengal Program (BoBP), Marine Stewardship Council India (MSC), Ministers from the States/UTs of Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Goa and Andhra Pradesh.

The delegation interacted with the exhibitors in the special pavilion that included a demonstration of aquariums, Artificial reefs, Seaweed Cultivation, capture fisheries, marine cage culture, bio floc, RAS, fish feed, LPG converter kits, pearl extraction and nucleus implantation, model of Setcom satellite terminals communication system, eco-friendly movable kiosks, multi-species hatchery etc.

Mithun is included in the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) database

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially recognised Mithun as a food animal, effective from 01st September 2023. To commemorate this milestone and celebrate the recognition, ICAR-NRC on Mithun proposes to establish ‘Mithun Day’ on the 01st of September every year and the Mithun meat is named ‘Weeshi.’ In addition, Mithun is included in the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) database. 

Kazheto Kinimi, Advisor of AH & Veterinary Services, Govt. of Nagaland, was the Chief Guest during the occasion. While delivering the Mithun Day speech, took a moment to compliment ICAR-NRCM’s achievements in research and extension activities. Mithun occupies a significant cultural and dietary role in the indigenous communities of North East regions, he added. He pointed out that this is the right time for us to promote entrepreneurship activities in Mithun as it is recognized as a food animal. Kazheto stated that the rearing and consumption of Mithun not only contribute to the sustenance of these local populations but also reflect the cultural and social significance attached to this remarkable food animal.

Temjen Imna Along, Minister of Higher Education & Tourism, Govt of Nagaland also attended the program as the Special Invitee. While delivering the speech, he highlighted the importance of ICAR-NRCM in inspiring the Mithun farmers as it provides livelihood security and is considered an auspicious & spiritual animal. He was proud that he was a ‘Mithun farmer’ and encouraged other farmers to take up scientific Mithun farming. He thanked the institute for providing livelihood opportunities to rural people. He in his final remarks urged all the Mithun farmers to stop the indiscriminate slaughter of well-built large-size Mithun and should be kept for breeding.

Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, DAHD, GoI, and Former Director, ICAR – NRC on Mithun, special guest during the occasion strongly emphasised the scope of Mithun as an organic, functional, and alternative food. Dr. Mitra urged the North East Animal Husbandry Department to utilise the animal husbandry schemes demonstrating a commitment to the development of the agricultural and livestock sectors. Utilising these schemes can lead to increased productivity, income generation, and the sustainable management of livestock resources, benefiting both farmers and the broader community, he added.

M Iboyaima Meitei, Advisor (Horticulture), North East Council was a guest of honour during the occasion. He stated that Mithun is a unique and culturally significant animal that deserves preservation. This species not only plays a crucial role in the livelihoods and dietary traditions of indigenous communities but also contributes to the rich biodiversity of the regions where it is found. Conservation efforts should focus on sustainable breeding practices and habitat protection to ensure the long-term survival of Mithun, he added.

State Governments along with Oil Palm processing companies are participating in Mega Plantation Drive for Oil Palm Cultivation to cover an area of roughly 7750 hectares

To increase the oil palm production area to 10 lakh hectares and boost the Crude Palm Oil production to 11.20 lakh tonnes by 2025-26, the Government of India launched National Mission for Edible Oils- Oil Palm in August 2021. In addition to the marked growth in the production of edible oils, the Mission is also successfully leading India towards an ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ by reducing the import burden. Under the Mission, the State Governments along with Oil Palm processing companies have initiated a Mega Oil Palm Plantation drive from 25th July 2023 to further increase oil palm cultivation in the country. Three major oil palm processing companies, namely, Patanjali Food Pvt. Ltd., Godrej Agrovet, and 3F are actively promoting and participating with the farmers in their respective states for record area expansion.

The Mega plantation drive commenced on 25th July 2023 and will continue till 12th August 2023. The major oil palm growing states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh will be participating in this initiative.

The drive started on the 25th of July 2023 in the Rest of India (RoI) states i.e. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamilnadu, Odisha, Goa and Karnataka, and will continue till the 08th of August and will cover an area of almost 7000 hectares area out of which more than 6500 hectares is targeted to be covered by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Rubber Board Regional Office in Nagaland flagged off NE-MITRA project 2023 in the state.
According to the press release by Rubber Board Regional Office Dimapur, Rubber Board under the project would be distributing free rubber saplings for planting this season, where every individual beneficiary would be eligible for a maximum of 2.00 ha (900 saplings).
The release stated that the regional office would cover an area of 2500 ha under the current financial year.

The release also added that the department will be covering all districts under Nagaland state suitable for rubber cultivation, and therefore requested interested persons to contact concerned Rubber Board Field Stations at Niuland, Sanis or Regional Office.

Indigenous fish collected and donated from the 16 districts of Nagaland

Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture and Department of Fisheries (ICAR- CIFA) and Aquatic Resources, Government of Nagaland have organised a Capacity Building Programme (CBP) for farmers of Nagaland on scientific aquaculture and inauguration of Aquarium Unit on fish germplasm of Nagaland was held at Brooder Fish Farm Dimapur. Dr Pramoda K. Sahoo director of ICAR-CIFA was present.

The state has a rich infantry of fish species which harvest different kinds of fish as it has 42 aquariums of houses of indigenous fishes collected and donated from the 16 districts of Nagaland.

According to the local media, Nagaland is having different fish species that have the potential to export, fisheries department of Nagaland has requested the farmers and the stakeholders to pass species of fisheries to the department for preservation instead of consumption. CIFA will be going to support aquarium units in the state.

Common carp culture in cages installed in Doyang reservoir to improve livelihood and income of tribal farmers

The Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Nagaland has been carrying out multifold activities in the Doyang reservoir, located in Wokha district, Nagaland to facilitate better fisheries activities and marketing. Considering these scenarios, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore in collaboration with Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Government of Nagaland has initiated culture of common carp in cages installed in Doyang reservoir. The reservoir has a water spread area of 2,258 hectare and is a potential resource for augmenting fish production in the state. Fish catch in the reservoir is mainly contributed by stocked fishes.

Demonstration of cage culture technology was carried out with the objectives of popularising cage culture technology among fishers of the State, increasing fish production and improving livelihood and income of tribal fishers. The awareness programme was organised on Cage culture technology on the occasion of fish seed stocking in cages with the active support from Rulanthung Ezung, District Fishery Officer, E Mhonthung Lotha and Konrhi Magh, Assistant Fishery Inspectors, Wokha, Nagaland.

Narendra Singh Tomar has said that the GOI wants to realise the vision of all-round and balanced development in the country

The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar has said that the Government of India wants to realise the vision of all-round and balanced development in the country. Tomar said that it is the belief of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that if the strength of the Northeast will increase, then the country’s strength will consolidate and with this strength the nation will move forward.

Further, Tomar launched the Honey Testing Laboratory at Dimapur, Nagaland, which will help beekeepers and processors for testing the honey produced. He also visited the Bamboo Museum and Organic AC Market. During these events, the Agriculture Minister of Nagaland G Kaito, Chief Secretary J Alam, Central Horticulture Commissioner Prabhat Kumar, other senior officers and distinguished people, farmers and scientists were present.

“The Northeast Region cannot be overlooked when it comes to all-round development. Therefore, through the schemes-programmes, funding and institutions of the government, it is our constant endeavour that the northeastern region should not depend on anyone, but should stand on its own feet and be able to contribute its fullest to the country’s development.” said Tomar, at an event organised at the North-East Agri Expo, Chumaokedlma.

The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, has recently visited the Central Institute of Horticulture in Nagaland and inaugurated a farmer’s workshop and exhibition. Speaking on the occasion, Tomar said that the Central Government and the State Governments are working together for the development of the North East Region including Nagaland.

“The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, wants that there should be holistic and balanced development and the benefits of the government’s schemes should reach the eligible people including farmers right down to the grassroots level, which will improve their standard of living. The Central Government is dedicated towards this and will continue to do so. For the development of Northeast, the Central Government will continue to walk step by step and shoulder to shoulder with the States. It is necessary to transform agriculture into advanced farming for the benefit of the farmers in the country including the Northeast,” he said.

In the programme organised by the Central Institute of Horticulture (Medziphema, Dimapur), the chief guest Tomar said that if the Central and State Governments work together, then its results are bound to be good, and this is what is happening now.

“The North-East Region has been a victim of neglect for a long time and due to its remoteness, it became difficult to get the benefits of schemes here, but after becoming the Prime Minister, Modi has constantly paid attention to get enough funds for the development of the North-East, ensured the Union Ministers visit this region regularly, the Prime Minister himself also came here several times so that the problems of the region continue to be resolved by the Government of India,” he said.

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar and Union Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), G Kishan Reddy recently hosted a virtual meeting to take stock of various schemes of the Government of India in the sector of the North Eastern Region (NER). Agriculture ministers of the North-Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura discussed the issues and challenges they were facing in detail.

Union Minister of State for DoNER, BL Verma,. Ministers for Agriculture of all the eight North Eastern States accompanied by the Secretary, DoNER, Agriculture Secretaries from the NER states with senior officials also marked their presence.

Tomar in his speech quoted, “Our door is always open. I request all the state governments to come up with a proposal if you find any difficulty in any schemes related to the agriculture sector.” He said that about 9 lakh hectare land in the North East is well suited for oil palm production as it has the potential to benefit farmers at large. 

He also talked about horticulture and medicinal crops which are grown only in North-Eastern State. He said that Agriculture and Commerce Ministry are working together to tap such opportunities and to solve the logistic problems faced by the North Eastern States.

The minister urged the state governments to pay attention to natural farming.

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar virtually inaugurated the Kisan Bhawan and Beekeeper Conference at the Central Institute of Horticulture, Nagaland. Tomar said, “Honey-producing farmers should move forward in collaboration with the state government, the Central Government has stood with them shoulder to shoulder and step by step.”

In the programme organised under the Amrit Mahotsav of Azadi, Tomar said that the climate of the North-East region is favourable for agriculture. The area is ideal for the cultivation of horticultural crops especially fruits and vegetables, flowers and spices. Keeping in view the interests of the small and marginal farmers of the North Eastern Region in horticulture, the Central Institute of Horticulture, Nagaland was established under the Central Sector Scheme of the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and this institute was established for the development of horticulture and upliftment of the farmers. The state is working well with the government, FPOs and other stakeholders. 

An exhibition of farmers’ products was organised in the programme. Mini kits were provided to the farmers for new experiments in farming. Products made by the trainee farmers were launched.
