In its Climate Transition Plan, FMC describes its strategy to reduce emissions and address climate-related risks and opportunities across its value chain.

FMC Corporation released its 2023 sustainability report, From the Ground Up. The 13th annual report highlights the company’s progress on its environmental goals, sustainable product innovation and community and stakeholder engagement. It is also the first publication of FMC’s Climate Transition Plan, which details the company’s steps to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2035.

“Sustainability and innovation are essential to growing our business and meeting the evolving needs of farmers and our industry,” said Julie DiNatale, vice president and chief sustainability officer. “This year’s report highlights FMC’s dedication to building upon the strong foundation established over the last decade and advancing sustainability across the organization.”

In its Climate Transition Plan, FMC describes its strategy to reduce emissions and address climate-related risks and opportunities across its value chain. Key elements of the plan include FMC’s net-zero roadmap, which identifies early actions and key levers for emissions reductions, and an overview of the company’s Scope 3 emissions and supplier engagement strategy. In 2023, the company reduced absolute Scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 18 per cent and reduced absolute Scope 3 emissions by 27 per cent. Additionally, FMC has made significant strides in waste circularity, increasing waste to beneficial reuse to 75 per cent globally. The company’s sites continuously seek opportunities to drive efficiencies and turn waste materials into valuable commodities.

FMC highlights its diverse portfolio of modern crop protection solutions and how it supports sustainable farming around the world. In addition to integrating sustainability and stewardship criteria throughout its product development processes, the company continuously evaluates how its products promote key areas of sustainability on the farm, including climate resilience, water use efficiency, biodiversity protection, soil and plant health, and compatibility with regenerative agriculture practices. “FMC is constantly innovating to help farmers solve increasing challenges brought by a changing climate, regulatory pressures and consumer demands,” continued DiNatale. “As we develop new products, we are focused on providing farmers with a variety of tools that can be applied in a range of farming systems to improve productivity, efficiency and sustainability.”

FMC Corporation has been recognised as an industry leader in sustainability by S&P Global, earning a place in its annual Sustainability Yearbook. Currently in its 20th year, The Sustainability Yearbook aims to distinguish those companies that have demonstrated strengths in corporate sustainability. In 2023, over 9,400 companies were assessed and only 759 companies – the top 15 per cent of each industry – were selected for inclusion in The Sustainability Yearbook 2024.

S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) spans a broad range of environmental, social and governance topics, from disclosures to internal company actions. The recognition highlights FMC’s commitment to transparency and ongoing efforts to embed sustainability throughout its business strategy and value chain.

This is the latest in a series of jumps in ESG ratings for FMC. The company recently received an A for Water Security and A- for Climate from CDP, was upgraded to an A by MSCI, and was recognized by Bloomberg as a leader in the agricultural chemicals industry for performance on material ESG issues. FMC was also recognized as an Equality 100 Leader in LGBTQ+ Inclusion by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and earned the distinction of being one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity in 2024 by Newsweek.

The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) assesses the 2,000 most influential companies across industries on their performance and contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

FMC Corporation has been recognised as a leader in the World Benchmarking Alliance’s 2023 Nature Benchmark. The company ranked 23rd out of 350 companies in the food and agriculture sector and 6th in the agricultural inputs segment.

The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) assesses the 2,000 most influential companies across industries on their performance and contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The 2023 Nature Benchmark ranked companies’ efforts to protect the environment and its biodiversity, including the protection and restoration of vital ecosystems.

“At FMC, we see our efforts to protect biodiversity and the environment as mission critical,” said Julie DiNatale, vice president and chief sustainability officer. “We are excited that our ranking by WBA reflects our hard work in this space and we will continue to partner with farmers and across the food and agriculture value chain to drive improvements that benefit generations to come.”

FMC continues to make strong progress on its net-zero and waste-to-beneficial reuse goals. Material circularity is a key priority for the company’s operating sites around the globe, which has collectively increased the company’s waste-to-waste-to-beneficial by nearly 70 per cent in 2023. FMC was also recognised for its strong governance around sustainability, notably its inclusion of key sustainability targets in executive compensation.

FMC Corporation, a leading global agricultural sciences company has announced a $30.5 million commitment to the Zero Hunger Private Sector Pledge. The Pledge, which emerged from the UN Food Systems Summit Action Track 1, is a call for companies to align their business initiatives and investments with a global movement to end hunger by 2030. FMC’s commitment includes the company’s ongoing efforts to improve the productivity and incomes of smallholder farmers, provide training and development opportunities for rural women and youth, and advance digital and precision technologies for farmers across Asia, Africa and Latin America.

“We are increasingly concerned by the growing number of people around the world facing acute food insecurity and believe companies like FMC have an obligation to use our resources and expertise to develop real solutions to the hunger crisis,” says Julie DiNatale, vice president and chief sustainability officer. “FMC’s commitment to the Zero Hunger Private Sector Pledge further aligns our investments with continuous efforts to support farmers, secure the future of food and achieve the goal of Zero Hunger by 2030.” 

Key Elements of FMC’s Pledge

A substantial part of FMC’s commitment is in precision agriculture technology to help farmers adapt to increasingly unpredictable growing conditions, including changes in weather patterns that bring new and evolving pest pressures. Through its pledge, FMC will invest in launching its Arc™ farm intelligence platform on farms across Cameroon, Burkina Faso, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, Colombia and Mexico through 2030. Arc™ farm intelligence provides farmers real-time data and insights about the scope and scale of pest pressure on their crops, allowing them to proactively treat pest outbreaks before they lead to widespread crop damage. The platform and all necessary field monitoring equipment are provided at no cost to the farmer, which is part of FMC’s commitment to ensuring smallholder and historically underserved farmers have access to advanced solutions that improve their productivity and resilience.

Smallholder farmers are at the center of FMC’s commitment to the Pledge. They are a vital part of the food production system globally and an increasingly important farmer segment in Asia Pacific, contributing to economic stability and food security within the region. FMC will invest part of its overall commitment in the company’s Sustainable, Transformational Initiative toward Development (STRIDE) program, a unique initiative launched in India, Pakistan and the Philippines to increase smallholder farmer access to innovative crop protection technologies and extension services to improve their yields, grow their incomes and enhance their quality of life. The program, which centers on technology, knowledge-building and community engagement, will directly impact more than 175,000 smallholder farmers across the region within a three-year period.

FMC’s remaining commitment includes investments in additional partnerships and programs, including a development initiative in Kenya that will train young people to provide extension services to smallholder farmers in the region. Partnering with G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, FMC is training rural women in India in beekeeping as a sustainable source of income. And in Brazil, FMC’s partnership with Traive, a fintech startup company, is helping small- to medium-sized farmers access credit to purchase vital crop inputs.
