The Brazil Technology Development Center will be built in Indaiatuba (SP) with opening planned for the end of 2024.

John Deere, a global technology company that provides software and equipment for the agriculture, construction and forestry sectors, has announced the construction of the Brazil Technology Development Center, its first development and testing center for tropical agriculture in the world. The company will invest around R$180 million in the project, with the aim of promoting synergy between the multiple R&D teams that are dedicated to designing and validating new products and technologies for the main production systems – grain, sugarcane, and special crops.

Now with this new Center the company is underlining the relevance of tropical agriculture as it continues investing in the country, both in product development and infrastructure. Its combined businesses in the country employ directly more than 9,000 people and produce equipment that is exported to more than 55 countries.

“Aware of the growing global demand for food and understanding the fundamental role that Brazil plays in this context, this Center will promote the development of everything that’s applicable to tropical agriculture. We’re going to be offering the Brazilian market a faster and more excellent service than we do currently”, points out Jahmy Hindman, CTO for John Deere.

The new Center, which will cover an area of 500,000 m², will be located in Indaiatuba (SP). Construction started in November 2023 and the finished building is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024. Around 150 employees will work at the Center in the engineering and R&D areas.

“The center will allow products to be conceived and tested in Brazil considering all the variables: soil, climate, connectivity levels, etc. This will ensure that solutions are delivered to local customers more quickly so small, medium and large Brazilian producers can work in an even more productive, profitable and sustainable way”, says Antonio Carrere, Vice-President, Sales & Marketing, Latin America.

With the setting up of the new Brazil Technology Development Center, John Deere expects to reduce the development time for new solutions by up to 40 per cent, depending on the type of project. The company has already launched products with a specific focus on the local market, such as its CH950 sugarcane harvester, a Brazilian project designed to meet the needs of the country’s sugarcane producers, and the S400 grain harvester, created for small and medium-size farms. This new Center will make it possible to speed up the delivery of solutions to the Brazilian market and considering its specific needs more and more.

The company’s Center for Precision Agriculture and Innovation (CAPI), which was set up in 2017 for research into and the development of the very latest trends in technological efficiency for farmers, with a focus on the use of hardware and software in precision agriculture, will now become an integral part of the new Center in Indaiatuba.

For the first time, signals produced by a plant’s physiological response to infection will be linked to optimised crop treatments delivered with John Deere See & Spray technology.

InnerPlant, the seed technology company enabling the earliest possible detection of stress in crops to make farming universally more efficient and sustainable, Syngenta, a global leader in agricultural innovation and crop protection and John Deere, a global leader in the delivery of agricultural, and construction, and forestry equipment, announce a joint effort to develop an integrated solution to fight fungus in soybeans. The first-of-its-kind solution will link together plants that give off early and specific signals when under attack by fungus with optimised crop protection treatments that are delivered with See & Spray technology.

“Fungal diseases are a massive and growing problem facing farmers who already face a great deal of risk in their operations,” explains Shely Aronov, CEO and co-founder of InnerPlant. “A solution that links signals directly from plants’ physiological responses to the individualised, precise delivery of optimised inputs will make farmers’ lives easier by delivering both improved efficacy and efficiency.”

Globally, crops are attacked by fungal diseases that result in substantial yield losses. And the problem is getting worse, according to experts who cite climate change and rising resistance to common fungicides as contributing to fast-rising fungal attacks that threaten the world’s food supply and a “global health catastrophe.”

“The technology from InnerPlant allows the detection of plant diseases at the earliest possible stage identifying plant diseases that otherwise often go undetected or untreated,” says Feroz Sheikh, Syngenta’s Chief Information and Digital Officer. “We are happy to engage in these initial trials with our partners. Integrated, innovative solutions are a critical path forward for managing the growing impact of soybean diseases and ensuring that farmers have the tools they need to feed the world.”

John Deere Operations Center™ and Yara’s Atfarm digital platform will provide farmers with tailored crop nutrition recommendations rooted in agronomic precision to ensure crops receive the right amount of nutrients.

John Deere and Yara have joined forces to launch a partnership that will combine Yara’s agronomic expertise with John Deere’s precision technology and advanced machinery. The partnership will enable farmers to increase yields and optimize fertilizer use, helping them contribute to the ambition of the European Union’s Farm to Fork Strategy.

To be able to produce more efficiently and sustainably, farmers need high-quality, actionable data and the technology to put these insights into practice. This is where digital farming will play a big role in helping farmers optimize the productivity of their fields. To further this vision, the advanced connectivity between the John Deere Operations Center™ and Yara’s Atfarm digital platform will provide farmers with tailored crop nutrition recommendations rooted in agronomic precision to ensure crops receive the right amount of nutrients where and when needed.

Partnering to make every nutrient count

The Atfarm platform uses Yara’s proprietary optimized index, which enables farmers to monitor the biomass development of their crops and nitrogen uptake throughout the season and access field specific variable rate application maps. This data can be seamlessly shared as a WorkPlan with the John Deere Operations Center™. Farmers can add operational details and wirelessly synchronize the plans, including prescriptions, to any machine featuring the John Deere Gen4 or G5 Display.

As executing variable rate maps is often perceived as complicated, this John Deere Yara solution makes it much easier, supporting farmers in producing more yield with less input. Through Yara’s agronomic advice, trials show that farmers can achieve up to seven percent yield increase while securing up to 14 percent Nitrogen savings in fertilizer use.

The new connectivity will be piloted from spring 2024 to a group of farmers in Germany, France, and the UK. In addition, Yara and John Deere will continue to collaborate on additional opportunities to further improve nutrient use efficiency for farmers.

Unique combination of expertise

“Achieving the ambitious goal of the Farm to Fork Strategy to reduce nutrient losses by 50% in 2030 requires the industry to work together. Through partnering with John Deere, farmers will be able to use our recommendations in an easy, practical way. This contributes to more sustainable food production without adding complexity for farmers,” says James Craske, VP Digital Solutions Europe at Yara International.

Katharina Nies, Marketing Manager Precision Ag at John Deere highlights: “For Small Grain Producers, crop nutrition is one of the largest opportunities for optimization. We are excited to partner with Yara, as this is a unique combination of science-based fertilization recommendations together with John Deere’s connected, highly precise & intelligent machines. With that farmers can achieve highest levels of nutrient use efficiency.”

The autonomous tractor will be available to farmers later this year.

John Deere, an American corporation that manufactures agricultural machinery, heavy equipment, forestry machinery, diesel engines, has revealed a fully autonomous tractor at CES 2022, that’s ready for large-scale production. The machine combines Deere’s 8R tractor, TruSet-enabled chisel plow, GPS guidance system, and new advanced technologies. The autonomous tractor will be available to farmers later this year.

The autonomous tractor serves a specific purpose: feeding the world. The global population is expected to grow from about 8 billion to nearly 10 billion people by 2050, increasing the global food demand by 50 per cent. All of these factors impact a farmer’s ability to farm during the most critical times of the year.

  • The autonomous tractor has six pairs of stereo cameras, which enables 360-degree obstacle detection and the calculation of distance.
  • The autonomous tractor is also continuously checking its position relative to a geofence, ensuring it is operating where it is supposed to, and is within less than an inch of accuracy.

To use the autonomous tractor, farmers only need to transport the machine to a field and configure it for autonomous operation. Using John Deere Operations Centre Mobile, they can swipe from left to right to start the machine.

John Deere Operations Centre Mobile provides access to live video, images, data and metrics, and allows a farmer to adjust speed, depth and more.

The fully autonomous tractor will be on display from January 5-8, 2022 at John Deere’s CES booth, located in Central Plaza at the Las Vegas Convention Centre.

The autonomous tractor will be available to
