IVPA urges Govt to reinstate standardised edible oil packaging to ensure transparency and consumer trust

The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA) has called upon the Government of India to reinstate standardized packaging requirements for edible oils, highlighting growing consumer confusion and the erosion of price transparency in the wake of deregulation.

Until 2022, edible oils were sold in specific, standardized pack sizes—such as 1 kg, 500 grams, and 5 kg—with mandatory declarations of unit sale price (USP) as per the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2021. However, subsequent changes in 2022 removed the requirement for fixed quantities, allowing manufacturers to determine packaging sizes freely.

While the deregulation was intended to encourage flexibility and market-driven choices, IVPA notes that the outcome has been less consumer-friendly. “Consumers are now faced with a plethora of brands and pack options that look similar but differ subtly in quantity—leading to confusion and, at times, misleading value perception,” IVPA said in an official statement.

Although unit sale price labelling remains mandatory, the IVPA points out that minor differences in net weight often escape consumer attention, reducing the effectiveness of price comparisons. This has led to skewed perceptions of value and challenges in everyday purchasing decisions—particularly for a household staple like edible oil.

IVPA is urging the government to restore a standardized range of pack sizes—such as 5 kg, 2 kg, 1 kg, 500 grams, and 200 grams—saying the move would significantly strengthen the consumer ecosystem. It would enhance pricing clarity, simplify comparisons, and promote fair trade practices.

“Standardized packaging isn’t just a regulatory issue—it’s a matter of consumer empowerment and market integrity,” said an IVPA spokesperson. “It ensures a level playing field, fosters brand trust, and supports long-term industry credibility.”

The call aligns with the broader government objectives of promoting transparency, consumer protection, and fair market conduct, particularly in essential commodities. As edible oil remains a staple in virtually every Indian household, consistent and clear packaging is crucial for informed choices and market fairness.

IVPA reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with the government and industry stakeholders to ensure packaging practices that benefit both consumers and producers.
