Worldwide demand for apiculture products estimated to increase at a CAGR of 4 per cent through 2032

According to a recently published industry report by Fact.MR, the value of the global apiculture market is $ 10.3 billion in 2022 and the same is projected to reach $ 15.3 billion by 2032-end. Worldwide demand for apiculture products is estimated to increase at a CAGR of 4 per cent through 2032.

Bee venom, royal jelly, propolis, bee bread, honeydew, beeswax, and honey are some key ingredients that are available in the market that are widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors. Further, honey is also used as a carrier in Ayurveda and helps prevent colds, coughs, etc., and acts as a laxative. Honey is used as a treatment for acne cure, to reduce weight and anxiety, to improve digestion, and others. The product is also utilized as a sweetener in different organic products. Further, pollen is an effective source of proteins and vitamins.

Propolis consists of natural antibiotics that are used commonly to make anti-ageing and cosmetic products. Elders use royal jelly as a nutrition-rich diet. Furthermore, venom is applied to cure the sting of bees and serve effectively against AIDS.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the demand for honey-based products and honey due to shifting consumer preference towards Ayurveda products. A noticeable increase in the demand for chemical-free, natural, and organic products further drives growth opportunities in the apiculture market.

There are various products that are available around the world because of their wider application range. These are useful in different end-use industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, polishing, food and beverages, cosmetics, etc.

Bees, propolis, royal jelly, venom, wax, honey but pollen, queens, and their larvae are some useful bee products that are available in the apiculture (beekeeping) industry. Honey can serve as the best cure for a lot of body and health problems; for instance, blood sugar, ulcers, heel burns, cough, etc. Owing to probiotic and anti-bacterial properties, honey is being used at an increased rate to make different soaps, medicines, cosmetic products, etc.

Bee venom is basically an indispensable ingredient that is used generally to cure the sting of the bee. Further, it is also used for the treatment of various problems such as rheumatism and arthritis. Honey is helpful for the reduction of indigestion and acidity, and for glowing skin. Honey is further used to boost immunity and lower the risk of heart disease.

When Pol-line colonies and standard colonies were treated against Varroa mites in both fall and December, Pol-line bees had a winter survival rate of 72 per cent while standard bees had a survival rate of 56 per cent

Pol-line honey bees, a type of Varroa mite resistant honey bee developed by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), are more than twice as likely to survive through the winter than standard honey bees, according to a study published in Scientific Reports.

Although ARS developed Pol-line bees in 2014, the study was the first time that they were tested head-to-head alongside standard honey bee stock in commercial apiaries providing pollination services and producing honey. Colonies’ ability to survive winter without being treated to control Varroa mites was followed in four states: Mississippi, California, and North and South Dakota.

In this study, Pol-line colonies that were given no treatment to control Varroa mites in the fall had a survival rate of 62.5 per cent compared to standard bees colonies in commercial apiaries also given no fall Varroa treatment, which had a winter survival rate of 3 per cent.

When Pol-line colonies and standard colonies were treated against Varroa mites in both fall and December, Pol-line bees had a winter survival rate of 72 per cent while standard bees had a survival rate of 56 per cent. So, Pol-line bees still had a better winter survival rate regardless of receiving double Varroa mite treatment.

This research was the culmination of breeding efforts to develop honey bee colonies with naturally low Varroa populations that began at the Baton Rouge lab in the late 1990s.

Winter colony survival is crucial for beekeepers because in February each year, about 2.5 million honey bee colonies are needed in California to pollinate almond crops. Larger, healthier colonies bring beekeepers premium pollination contracts at about $220 a colony.

Varroa mites can cause massive colony losses; they are the single largest problem facing beekeepers since they spread to the US from South East Asia in 1987. While miticides used to control Varroa exist, resistance is developing to some of them.

In addition, overall winter survival, the scientists examined the levels of viruses in Pol-line and standard bee colonies that are commonly transmitted by varroa mites.

The Pol-line colonies showed significantly lower levels of three major viruses: Deformed wing virus A, Deformed wing virus B and Chronic bee paralysis virus, all of which can cause significant problems for colonies.

Bee Vectoring Technologies International released an update letter to shareholders from Chief Executive Officer Ashish Malik announcing financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year which ended September 30, 2021. 

The company has also made strong progress in key financial metrics: Revenue of $400,000 which represents a year-on-year growth of +47 per cent using constant currency (US$/CAD$) exchange rates for FY2021 and FY2020. As reported, revenue growth is +38 per cent since the CAD strengthened in 2021 as compared to 2020. Gross margins improved from 39 per cent in FY2020 to 42 per cent in FY2021. This improvement was driven by the lower cost of production of BVT’s Clonostachys rosea strain BVT CR-7 and the introduction of the higher-margin honey bee solution.

The company has cash on hand of $2.7 million. The strong cash balance allows the company to continue executing its growth plan as we enter 2022. The company continues to focus on operational efficiency and cash management as evident by a reduction of cash used by operations from $3.67 million in FY2020 to $2.85 million in FY2021.
