ADEPIDYN® technology on track to be first of Syngenta’s crop protection active ingredients to attain billion-dollar annual sales within eight years of commercialisation.

Syngenta Group, one of the world’s largest agricultural technology companies, is extending its leadership in fungicides with the success of its patented ADEPIDYN® technology (trademark for active ingredient: pydiflumetofen). Following its recent registration in Great Britain, farmers in more than 55 countries globally are now able to access this powerful fungicide, with strong sales across continents reflecting farmer demand for effective control of a broad range of crop diseases. The company is on track to achieve one billion US dollars in sales of products containing ADEPIDYN® technology, marking the first time its active ingredient achieves this milestone in only eight years.  

“ADEPIDYN® technology is a game-changer for modern agriculture and enables farmers to grow crops more sustainably,” said Ioana Tudor, Global Head of Marketing at Syngenta Crop Protection. “It represents a significant milestone in our efforts to secure high yields with low impact to the planet and is exciting because of its high levels of consistency and effectiveness. Worldwide, farmers lose an estimated 10-23 percent of their crops to fungal diseases each year. An additional 10-20 percent is lost post-harvest. In the top five most important calorie crops – rice, wheat, corn, soybeans and potatoes – fungal infections have been estimated to cause yield losses that could feed at least 600 million people every day for a year.

ADEPIDYN® technology offers a new solution that effectively fights fusarium head blight in wheat, which produces mycotoxins that contaminate harvests and threaten human and animal health. In addition, it offers a step-change in performance against a wide spectrum of other important diseases, such as septoria in wheat and net blotch in barley. ADEPIDYN® technology is registered in more than 100 crops including corn, soybean, peanuts, vegetables, potatoes, grapes, tomatoes and fruit crops.

ADEPIDYN® technology embodies Syngenta’s commitment to sustainable innovation, core to its new Group-wide sustainability priorities announced in April. The effectiveness and long-lasting activity of the technology enable low use rates and potentially fewer sprays especially in leaf spot diseases, while safeguarding beneficial organisms. It is also an important tool for resistance management. The technology works by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme that is essential for fungal respiration, starving the fungi from the energy they need to survive. It is designed to adhere to the plant surface and to penetrate rapidly through the leaf surface – creating a reservoir of active ingredient in the waxy layer of the plant tissue that enables even distribution and long-lasting protection as the plant grows.

ADAMA Ltd., a leading crop protection company, has announced the launch of Maxentis, a new versatile fungicide that delivers reliable control over a broad range of diseases in wheat, barley, and oilseed rape, to increase yields and improve income.

Maxentis delivers dependable control of Septoria, Yellow Rust, and Brown Rust in wheat; Leaf Blotch, Net Blotch, and Rust in barley; and Sclerotinia and Alternaria in OSR, helping bring peace of mind to farmers while simplifying and reducing the expense of their spray programs. In high-potential wheat areas, Maxentis can be used as a T1 application in a spray program with other fungicides, or as a standalone T1 or T2 broad-spectrum product in lower-potential areas. The non-SDHI formulation makes it an excellent partner for spraying programs, allowing farmers the flexibility to use an SDHI combination at the critical flag leaf stage of the wheat.

Two modes of action are combined to enhance the impact of Maxentis. This means that fungal diseases are controlled across multiple growth stages of the disease, resulting in greater efficacy and healthier crops.

UPL to acquire Corteva Agriscience’s global mancozeb fungicide business outside of China, Japan, South Korea and EU member countries

UPL Ltd. the global provider of sustainable agricultural solutions, announces the planned acquisition of Corteva Agriscience’s solo mancozeb global fungicide business outside of China, Japan, South Korea, and EU member countries.

The acquisition will give UPL ownership of Dithane, the original global mancozeb brand which has provided farmers with a reliable disease management solution, as well as access to Rainshield technology which enables crop protection in wet weather conditions.

Mancozeb is a highly effective protective fungicide used to prevent plant diseases across a range of crops, including rice, soybean, wheat, onions, potatoes, and other vegetables and fruits. Across the crop protection industry, mancozeb is also an increasingly important tool in managing fungicide resistance. UPL, the market leader in this technology, was instrumental in introducing mancozeb for soybean production in 2014, where it proved effective in controlling fungal diseases and boosting growth and yield.

The acquisition is limited to Corteva’s solo formulations of mancozeb, with Corteva retaining ownership of premix formulations. The transaction is subject to customary approvals and is expected to conclude Q1 of FY24-25. This acquisition includes all data, registrations, trademarks for Corteva’s solo mancozeb products, and a license to the Rainshield technology but excludes manufacturing and formulation facilities.

Bayer announces Luna Pro fungicide. Luna Pro is a premium premix fungicide that provides both foliar and soilborne disease control in potatoes. The newest addition to the Bayer potato portfolio utilises prothioconazole, a DMI foliar fungicide, and fluopyram, an SDHI fungicide. DMIs work by hindering the growth of certain fungi on a cellular level, which helps to improve overall plant health and increase yield potential. Luna Pro is the first DMI-containing foliar fungicide offered by Bayer for potatoes.

The combination of two proven active ingredients, fluopyram (FRAC group 7) and prothioconazole (FRAC group 3) offers a strong defence against early blight, white mould and other key potato diseases. The addition of prothioconazole provides a second mode of action with rotational flexibility and increased resistance management. Luna Pro utilises a combination of systemic active ingredients that provides protection throughout the plant helping growers deliver excellent crops to market.

Insecticides (India) Limited (IIL), one of India’s leading crop protection and nutrition companies, has launched an indigenously made fungicide called ‘Stunner’ to combat mainly Downy Mildew disease in grapes. This broad-spectrum fungicide comes as a respite particularly for the production of grapes as huge losses, in the form of mortality of the plant ranging from 20 per cent to 80 per cent, are incurred by the farmers due to this fungal disease. Downy Mildew disease plays havoc by significantly affecting the quality of grapes, IIL said.

“This is the first time that this technical and formulation is being manufactured in India. Owing to the requirement of a fungicide for successful grape cultivation, our farmers were mainly dependent on imported fungicide formulations to date. However, being a firm believer of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, we took this step, and here we are with Stunner in hand for the first time in India. Stunner is an effective fungicide for Downy Mildew disease in grapes,” informed, Rajesh Aggarwal, Managing Director, Insecticides (India).

BioSpectra is the latest biorational fungicide to be organically certified for postharvest applications

Pace International, a leading provider of sustainable postharvest solutions and technologies for the fresh produce industry, announced that BioSpectra 100 SC is now listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for organic use in the US.

The announcement comes six years after the introduction of the product when the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) approved the product for postharvest applications.

BioSpectra received its OMRI Listed seal after completing the rigorous certification process and requirements set forth for organic crop production use.

BioSpectra is the latest biorational fungicide to be organically certified for postharvest applications. It provides a broad-spectrum decay control against several major fungal postharvest diseases across various crops and has shown better disease control compared to other organic alternatives.

A TATA Enterprise Rallis India Limited, has announced the introduction of two new fungicides, CAPSTONE and ZAAFU, which are intended to combat different types of neck blast and sheath blight.

The fungicide portfolio of Rallis India Limited is well known in the market, and the company expects CAPSTONE and ZAAFU to make up more than 10 per cent of its crop protection portfolio’s fungicide category.

Rallis India launches CAPSTONE for the first time on the Indian market to treat this disease. Fenoxanil and Isoprothialane are the main ingredients in CAPSTONE. Isoprothiolane is an inhibitor of lipid biosynthesis, whereas Fenoxanil is an inhibitor of melanin biosynthesis. For the first time in India, farmers will now have access to a mixture containing Fenoxanil. In collaboration with Nihon Nohyaku, a Japanese company that develops agrochemicals, this product was created in India.

CAPSTONE has a dual mode of action because it is a combination of two different action fungicides, giving it qualities like excellent efficacy, longer duration of disease control, no cross-resistance, and prevention against resistance build-up.

The systemic fungicide ZAAFU has a special formulation. Zaafu offers a great treatment for Sheath Blight and Sheath Rot in Paddy. It is a fungicide in the form of granules that are intended to be broadcast in the field along with the first top dressing of fertiliser.

Agrochemical and fertiliser major Coromandel International launched three insecticides and a fungicide in recent.Company’s senior assistant vice-president and head (formulations-sales and marketing) B.V.S. Satish, launched Ortain Super, Phendal Plus, Canister and Prop-Plus, in the presence of firm’s assistant vice-president and head (formulations-sales and marketing) G.V. Suryanarayana, dealers and distributors.

  B.V.S. Satish said “All the four products had been developed in-house the company after a lot of research and development work. “The three insecticides developed for rice, cotton and vegetable crops are a combination effective chemicals, while fungicide Prop-Plus will protect paddy crops from sheath blight and rice blast infections”.

Satish also added that  the company was working towards strengthening its product portfolio for all major crops.Company’s senior general manager and regional business head S. Dhanuka Agritech has launched a herbicide and a fungicide for maize and tomato crops. The herbicide is targeted for the protection of maize crops by weed management whereas the fungicide has been introduced focussed on tomato crop protection from fungus and bacteria. The two products Cornex and Zanet have been launched in Maharashtra and will be soon available in other parts of the country. 

Cornex has been developed in technical collaboration with Nissan Chemicals, Japan and is based on Japanese technology. Zanet has been developed in collaboration with two Japanese companies, Hokko Chemical Industry and Nippon Soda, Japan.

Corteva Agriscience has launched Zorvec Encantia, a new fungicide that specifically targets late blight, a detrimental pathogen currently compromising local potato growth. The solution, based on Zorvec active, is the first member of a novel class of fungicides, which effectively utilises a unique biochemical mode of action, and has no cross-resistance with existing fungicides.

“Zorvec Encantia is here to change everything in terms of effectiveness, protection and productivity, and will be a great ally for South Africa’s potato producers during all stages of cultivation and in challenging climatic conditions,” says Stephan Marais, Product Manager at Corteva Agriscience. “After more than a decade of research, we have created a novel chemical with an unrivalled level of consistency and control, especially when it comes to management, allowing for lower operational costs and overall improved efficiency.”

Zorvec Encantia produces multiple effects on a pathogen’s life cycle for better efficacy and duration of control and protects leaves as they grow and expand, enhancing the protection of new foliage even if they have not been treated.

Coromandel International has introduced five new products in its crop protection range: three insecticides, one herbicide and one fungicide into their portfolio. The meeting was attended by 200 dealers along with 50 employees. 

OFFICER is a new generation selective herbicide. It is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide that controls almost all categories of weeds in paddy. ORTAIN SUPER is a combination insecticide for paddy, has a dual mode of action for resistance management and provides effective control over both lepidopteran and sucking pests. PHENDAL PLUS insecticide for paddy prevent resistance development with its dual mode of action and has a knockdown effect causing faster kill of target pests. CANISTER is a broad-spectrum insecticide for chilli having effective control on mites, whiteflies and thrips, has control in all stages of mite’s lifecycle and has a long residual action that results in long-duration control. PROP – PLUS is a combination of two highly systemic triazole fungicides resulting in two different modes of action that help in resistance management for paddy, offer effective disease control, has less foam formation and have good rain fastness.

UPL Limited has announced that UPL Group has acquired OptiCHOS, a naturally derived fungicide for its Natural Plant Protection (NPP) business unit. The NPP portfolio houses natural and biologically derived agricultural inputs and technologies. OptiCHOS offers farmers a new, low-risk, residue free, and bio-degradable broad spectrum disease control solution, with low environmental and human impacts.

The active ingredients of OptiCHOS were developed from the chitin-rich by-products of the shellfish industry by BioCHOS, a spin-off of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. NPP’s acquisition of OptiCHOS includes the registration data package and patents enabling the product to be used in mixture of a wide range of fungicides, providing the agricultural industry a variety of options. OptiCHOS has already been submitted for approval for use in the European Union and NPP expects to be able to launch OptiCHOS products across the bloc in the next few years.

Howler fungicide, the first product from agricultural innovator AgBiome, has been granted EPA approval for an updated label with expanded crops, disease targets and application flexibility. This new label brings the addition of 20 new crops, new pathogens and new use patterns for both aerial and seed treatment applications and exciting news on pollinator safety.

Even more specialty crop growers will be able to unleash the power of Howler on their soil-borne and foliar diseases with Howler’s expanded label featuring key crops like hops, sugar beets, oilseed crops, and ornamentals.
