The first version of akṣara will cover nine crops viz. paddy, wheat, maize, sorghum, barley, cotton, sugarcane, soybean, and millets for 5 countries in the Indian subcontinent.

Cropin Technology, a global Agtech company enabling intelligent agriculture, announced the launch of ‘akṣara’, the sector’s first purpose-built open-source (Apache 2.0 License and with no restrictions) Micro Language Model (µ-LM) for climate smart agriculture, built on Mistral’s foundation model. ‘Akṣara’ is designed to address the problems faced by the underserved farming communities in the Global South by removing barriers to knowledge and empowering anyone in the agriculture ecosystem to build frugal and scalable AI solutions for the sector. With the goal of democratizing access to digital technologies and modernizing agriculture for the 21st century, Cropin aims to empower agricultural stakeholders, developers, and researchers to tackle global challenges like food security, climate change, resource conservation – water and soil, regenerative agriculture practices amongst others by providing access to contextual, factual and actionable information.

The first version of akṣara will cover nine crops viz. paddy, wheat, maize, sorghum, barley, cotton, sugarcane, soybean, and millets for 5 countries in the Indian subcontinent. These food crops collectively account for a substantial portion of the world’s food requirements and are the staple food for the population in the global south. Developed by Cropin and hosted on Hugging Face, akṣara is a frugal and scalable µ-LM built and fine-tuned on top of the Mistral-7B-v0.2 model. Recognizing the environmental impact of running large language models (LLMs), Cropin has meticulously compressed ‘akṣara’ into 4-bit from 16-bit by using QLoRA or Quantization and Low-Rank Adapters (LoRA). The model seems to be more relevant than GPT-4 Turbo by almost 40% on randomly selected test dataset as measured by the ROUGE or the Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation scoring algorithm. The model ensures that the responses are factually relevant and brief while minimizing the compute and storage resource requirement.

It was fine-tuned with more than 5,000 high-quality question-response pairs specific to agriculture and more than 160k tokens in the context. These numbers are expected to increase as we add more crops, geographic locations and use cases. To ensure that the model remains faithful to the question, it is grounded by using techniques like RAG or Retrieval Augmented Generation by cross referencing an authoritative subject matter experts’ knowledge base.

This initiative also demonstrates Cropin’s commitment to sharing knowledge, and ethical and responsible use of AI for agriculture. The Cropin Al team used Google’s People + AI Guidebook and discussions with Google’s Responsible AI team to help guide the model’s design process. The aim was to ensure the model’s alignment with key responsible AI principles, reduce biases, promote the use of AI for sustainable agricultural practices (practices involving biological controls, soil conservation, water conservation, companion planting, preserving beneficial plants and insects), and ensure the equitable distribution of benefits across farming communities in the Global South.

This open-source initiative aims to support agronomists, agri-scientists, field staff, and extension workers and gradually extend the services to farmers in multiple languages, considering the need for local language support. Cropin believes that transforming global food systems requires equipping industry think tanks and researchers with the best decision-making tools and information. This knowledge should then be disseminated at the grassroots level.

Speaking on the announcement, Krishna Kumar, Founder & CEO, Cropin said, “In an era where Large Language Models are reshaping jobs, businesses, and customer interactions, the spotlight is now on industry-specific models trained on niche and comprehensive domain data as the ‘next big thing.’ These models can potentially transform agriculture, paving the way for a new era of tech-driven farming in a sector that has traditionally seen limited technological advancement. Domain-specific AI models for agriculture are expected to attract significant investments, offering a practical and economically viable approach to food systems transformation. Akṣara reinstates our commitment to leading the tech-driven agricultural movement in the years ahead, significantly impacting small-scale farmers’ lives”.

Introducing the very first digital parametric insurance marketplace connecting carriers & customers.

New Delhi based Weather Risk Management Services (WRMS), an agriculture & climate risk management company, introduced SecuRisk to bridge the $160 billion global protection gap. SecuRisk is the digital-first global parametric insurance marketplace that supports product design, product validation, digital beneficiary onboarding, product education, policy purchase, claim management & settlement. The platform is backed by a proprietary global data stack and simple product education and capacity-building tools keeping the needs of low-income communities in mind. SecuRisk serves a diverse set of customers such as individuals, aggregators, development institutions, brokers on the demand side, and insurers and reinsurers on the supply side.

Whilst parametric insurance has had significant traction in Europe and North America, the parametric needle hasn’t moved much in emerging economies because risk carriers and the marketplace have limited access to expertise, resources, and data. Parametric Insurance is the need of the hour in emerging economies, but there are gaps like high product rollout time and cost, limited quality reliable data, and lack of product awareness. Thus, emerging economies fail to get significant and sustainable benefits from this solution.

“The global underinsurance gap is $160 billion, 96 per cent of which is in emerging economies; Asia accounts for over 85 per cent. The challenge is that traditional indemnity-based insurance solutions have not been able to fill this gap because they are data and resource intensive, expensive, and time-consuming which makes them unviable to cover small ticket risks relevant for these economies. The solution is Parametric Insurance, but while there has been significant traction in Europe and North America, the parametric needle hasn’t moved much in emerging economies.” said Anuj Kumbhat, Founder & CEO, WRMS.

Talking more about the platform Anuj Kumbhat added, “While designing this platform we had one thing very clear; it should be simple, transparent & easy to navigate to serve emerging economies & low literacy communities. The platform has an interface for insurers and reinsurance to evaluate and underwrite parametric policies. It also allows them to manage their portfolio risk and claims through the system. The customer-facing front-end also has a mobile application that enables the end-end parametric insurance policy lifecycle management for customers through a simple interface.”

Anuj further added, “Our comprehensive parametric insurance platform enables insurers to build, operate and monitor parametric insurance for global beneficiaries by leveraging our global data stack and integrated risk modeling. The platform supports secure and rapid underwriting and claims management and has simple product education and capacity building tools keeping the needs of low-income communities in mind.”

Blockchain technology gained extensive traction because of its vital role in the fintech sector. It has now been seen to have vast applications beyond cryptocurrencies and the agriculture sector is not an exception. Technology has drastically transformed the agriculture sector along with healthcare, real estate, banking, and so on. As per market predictions, blockchain is all set to become a game-changer in India with a whopping $176 billion of business potential by 2050.

Considering the capabilities of blockchain, the agriculture sector in India is all set to propel it to a whole new level, continuing its contribution to the $5 trillion economy. There are nearly 150 startups working on the application of blockchain technology in the agriculture sector. Even today, the Indian agriculture sector is undergoing several issues that need immediate resolution for scalability and growth of the sector. The agritech startups leveraging the potential of blockchain technology are helping the agriculture sector in numerous ways.

With India being an agrarian economy, agriculture is considered the primary source of livelihood for around 58 per cent of the country’s population. It is one of the most important sectors, and yet a slow adopter of tech-driven solutions and techniques. It was the outbreak of the pandemic that devastated the food supply chain across the world and resulted in the accelerated adoption of technology.

In recent years, the agritech startups have introduced technology-based solutions that give a boost to the resilience of the sector. By embedding blockchain technology in agriculture, it has become easier to fortify farming in India through different use cases of blockchain technology.

Data generation and processing

Agritech startups are embedding IoT sensors and blockchain technologies to consolidate information on multiple steps of farming –from evaluating the quality of seeds, to crop tracking and the journey of crops from the farm to the market. Amidst the extensive farming process, it is imperative yet complex for farmers to keep track of the farming process. With IoT-enabled smart farming systems, it becomes easier to manage the effect of temperature, pH, soil moisture, humidity and light on the crops. These devices generate data and help farmers make well-informed decisions based on data storage.

Further, to make the data more insightful, machine learning algorithms are applied to the data gathered from the sensors. This enables predictive models to drive high use cases for crop quality recommendations, crop identification, crop yield and crop demand prediction. With the captured information, farmers are also able to have a sense of control over the irrigation of fields.

The advantages

Traditionally, the method of storing data on a centralised server has several risks associated with a single point of failure. However, the usage of blockchain technology stores data across every node, which prevents centralisation of authority, making the exchange of data seamless with specific stakeholders and greatly reduces risk. This brings efficiency to the entire crop or food production value chain.
