First-of-its-kind agreement on sustainability data for farmers, processors, food manufacturers and retail brand owners

dsm-firmenich, the leading innovator in health, nutrition, and beauty and Sustained, a SaaS sustainability company announced the partnership to enable customers to report the farm-to-fork environmental footprint of food products containing animal proteins including eggs, meat, milk and fish.

This agreement, the first of its kind, allows farmers, processors, food manufacturers and retail brand owners to manage and communicate the sustainability of food production by leveraging dsm-firmenich’s Suste service for capturing farm-level specific emissions data and Sustained’s platform to deliver product-level environmental life cycle assessments of consumer food products at scale.

One-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from food production. Companies along the food value chain are increasingly called upon to measure, report and reduce their environmental footprints because of their sustainability commitments, regulatory requirements and consumer preferences.

Over 70 per cent of consumers now consider sustainability as a primary driver in purchasing decisions creating a pressing need for transparent and reliable data on sustainability across the entire value chain.

Under the BIMSTEC Cooperation, India will be annually exporting eggs worth Rs 350 crore to Sri Lanka

Tamil Nadu poultry farmers in Namakkal are gearing up to export eggs to Sri Lanka as part of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). Under the BIMSTEC Cooperation, India will be annually exporting eggs worth Rs 350 crore to Sri Lanka’s State Trading Corporation to help the island nation tide over the crisis. This is part of a 350-crore initiative from the Indian government to help Sri Lanka overcome their economic crisis.

Sri Lanka has been facing an economic crisis and a shortage of poultry feed, leading to a shortage of eggs and a significant increase in their cost. Currently, an egg costs Rs 13.

The Sri Lankan cabinet has approved a proposal to import 90 million chicken eggs per month to reduce egg prices in the country. The BIMSTEC has already signed a memorandum of understanding with the Sri Lankan State Trading Corporation for the supply of onions, red chillies, pulses and chemicals to the island nation.

Due to outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Bihar India

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in Hong Kong has announced that in view of a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) about outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Purnia District and Bhagalpur District of Bihar in India, the CFS has instructed the trade to suspend the import of poultry eggs from the areas with immediate effect to protect public health in Hong Kong.

A CFS spokesman said that Hong Kong has currently established a protocol with India for the import of poultry eggs but not for poultry meat. According to the Census and Statistics Department, no eggs were imported into Hong Kong from India in the first three months of this year.

“The CFS has contacted the Indian authority over the issues and will closely monitor information issued by the WOAH and the relevant authorities on the avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation,” the spokesman said.
