The study will experiment with varying levels of nutrient concentration and lighting in high-tech greenhouses

China-based Pinduoduo has teamed up with Wageningen University & Research (WUR) of the Netherlands to study ways to improve the quality of greenhouse-grown tomatoes.

WUR is widely regarded as one of the world’s top agricultural research institutions. The study will experiment with varying levels of nutrient concentration and lighting in high-tech greenhouses to improve the quality of fruit without compromising on the output.

To be conducted in two phases, the study first experimented with faster-growing dwarf tomatoes before validating the findings using regular greenhouse tomato cultivation. The dwarf tomatoes can be modified for cultivation in vertical farms, while the high-wire tomatoes are commonly grown in greenhouses. Bumble bees are employed to help with pollination, and the tomatoes are grown without pesticides.

The growing plan involves altering light levels that the crop is exposed to and adjusting the electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution that the crop is grown in to derive optimal combinations or ‘crop recipes’ that growers can implement. Using these optimised ‘crop recipes’ in a controlled greenhouse environment, Chinese growers can supply consumers with even better-quality tomatoes all year-round.

“Crop quality can be greatly improved through modifications of cultivation conditions under modern horticulture technologies,” said Professor Leo Marcelis, Head of Horticulture and Product Physiology Department at WUR. “We are glad to partner with Pinduoduo on this project.”
The WUR study is the latest agricultural research collaboration by Pinduoduo, which has worked with leading global research institutes to advance food and agricultural science. As a leading agricultural platform connecting 16 million farmers to over 850 million consumers, Pinduoduo has made it a strategic priority to promote agricultural modernization using technology.

“Consumers are seeking higher-quality produce that is both tastier and healthier, and advancements in plant science and technology can help meet this demand,” said Xin Yi Lim, Pinduoduo’s Executive Director of Sustainability and Agricultural Impact. “As a user-focused agricultural platform, we are supporting research at WUR that can meet the needs of our users and better the livelihoods of growers in China.”

It will be the first landmark global event in the Greater Mekong Subregion

Thailand is hosting the International Horticultural Expo 2026 in Udon Thani, a northeastern province. It will be the first landmark global event in the Greater Mekong Subregion. The mega-event will be featuring the theme “Diversity of Life: Connecting Water, Plants, and People for Sustainable Living” driven by the ‘3S’ food and farming policy and BCG economic model of the government and SDGs of the United Nations.

At the annual general meeting 2022 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) agreed to the Thai proposal in which International Horticultural Expo 2026 will be hosted in Udon Thani province during November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027. The proposed theme is “Diversity of Life: Connecting Water, Plants, and People for Sustainable Living”, citing the site’s unique wetland area and the special connection between water, natural resources, and the people living in it.

Presenting the proposal at the handover ceremony of the event to a new host destination was HE Dr Chalermchai Sree-on, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, who was head of the Thai delegation.

According to Dr Chalermchai, Thailand is committed to contributing to the global food security through the ‘3S’ farming and food policy, focusing on Food Safety, Food Security, and Sustainability. This aims to fulfill the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while adhering to the climate aspiration of the Paris Agreement. Such commitment can serve the theme and presentation of the Expo in Udon Thani and will help shed light on the sustainability issue, inspire and ignite collaboration on global actionable measures towards sustainability living with minimal cost to the ecosystem’.

Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), who represented Thailand in the official bid for the Expo, emphasised the government’s development strategy and national agenda to promote the Bio-Circular-Green Economy Model or BCG as a new development model that seeks to drive socio-economic growth while minimising and even reversing the negative impacts on the environment. The strategy will be of great contribution to Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026.

The Udon Thani Expo 2026 is expected to cost 2,500 million baht in investment and attract 3.6 million visitors over 134 days during the expo.

XAG Annual Conference 2021, held in Guangzhou, China, has launched a series of agricultural innovations to empower farmers.

With the theme “Step into Agriculture”, XAG Annual Conference 2021, held in Guangzhou, China, has launched a series of agricultural innovations to empower farmers with more sophisticated autonomous solutions. Five new products, including the XAG P50 and P100 Agricultural Drone, XAG M500 and M2000 Remote Sensing Drone, and the updated XAG R150 Unmanned Ground Vehicle, are released in China and will be available for global sales in 2022.

For eight long years, XAG has set its record by bridging the gap of the digital divide in about 42 countries, where its agricultural drones are widely used. XAG Agricultural Drone has launched its two new model, P100 and V50. where the former inhibits the classical quadrotor structure with a 40kg effective payload, while the latter adopts XAG’s leading dual tilt-wing design to meet the needs of different users based on the farm size. In addition, XAG has added the Hydraulic Spray system as another task system to its R150, allowing users to rapidly assemble a group of liquid pumps and pressure spray nozzles for crop protection in various farming landscapes.

In April 2021, XAG launched the “Super Cotton Farm” in Northwest China, where two post-90s generation farmers manage a 200-hectare cotton field with the help of drones, robots, and AI.
