The collaboration will promote resilient agriculture beginning with smallholder farms in India and commercial farms in Brazil

Agmatix, a start-up AgTech business specialising in turning agronomic big data into powerful models and insights, announced a partnership with NASA Harvest – NASA’s global Food Security and Agriculture Consortium – to support crop production in a sustainable way at the field level and mitigate the impact of climate change.

A combination of ground sampling and remote sensing data will be used to support farmers in their transition toward sustainable agriculture. The methodology developed within this partnership will track farmer efforts to improve conservation management and guide them to improve their sustainability levels.

“According to the World Economic Forum, sustainable agriculture practices must triple in order to prevent climate change. Currently, adoption is hindered by a lack of consistent and acceptable measurements at scale. Our collaboration will promote resilient agriculture beginning with smallholder farms in India and commercial farms in Brazil, and lead to further expansion worldwide,” comments Ron Baruchi, CEO of Agmatix.

“NASA Harvest is excited to partner with Agmatix to advance the use of satellite-based information to help inform on-farm decisions which can ultimately result in increased resilience while reducing waste,” comments Inbal Becker-Reshef, NASA Harvest Director.

NASA Harvest will provide its expertise on agricultural remote sensing and leverage tools developed by the consortium, which will then be combined with field data from Agmatix and processed using a proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. These data-driven insights can help farmers make field-level decisions that impact sustainability most effectively, such as cover crop selection and fertiliser application.

This investment will not only expand UPL’s market access in Brazil but also strengthen its product portfolio as SEEDCORP|HO

UPL Ltd, a global provider of sustainable agricultural solutions, announced that its company, Advanta Seeds UK, and Bunge have signed an agreement to acquire a 20 per cent stake each in SEEDCORP|HO.

This intended investment is part of UPL Group’s OpenAg® purpose to drive collaboration to offer a complete package of solutions for farmers. It also underscores the company’s commitment to supporting every stage of the agricultural process, from sowing to post-harvest. Through the agreement, Bunge intends to expand its barter portfolio to reinforce its grain sourcing position in Brazil.

Bhupen Dubey, CEO of Advanta Seeds said: “As we continue to grow our global footprint, this investment will not only expand our market access in Brazil but also strengthen our product portfolio as SEEDCORP|HO is Brazil’s third largest Soyabean Germplasm company”.

Rossano de Angelis Jr, Vice President of Agribusiness at Bunge, said: “With this transaction we will further solidify the relationship with our partners during harvest planning. Combined with our technical expertise and market knowledge, we will be able to advise on the adoption of seed varieties that best meet demand, including meeting the demand for more sustainable solutions with a focus on reducing the carbon footprint of the entire growing process.”

Brazil represents a great opportunity for BVT to further market a foliar and soil-applied version of CR-7

Canada based Bee Vectoring Technologies International Inc. has announced that the Company has been granted a patent for BVT’s Clonostachys rosea CR-7 microbial strain (CR-7) in Brazil for use as a biological control agent in agriculture.

The Brazil patent grant (Patent Number BR112016005139-4) recognizes the unique properties of BVT’s proven CR-7 strain. It covers the use of CR-7 in any application method, in any formulation (solid or liquid), for yield improvement, and for disease control.

Brazil represents a significant market opportunity for BVT across specialty and row crops. It has a vast diversity of fruit and vegetable crops and is also the largest soybean producer in the world, with an estimated 140 million tonnes grown annually on about 100 million acres. It is also the world’s largest soybean exporter, with annual exports estimated at 90 million tonnes.

“We are making significant advancements in soybean seed treatment in the United States, and extending the work into Brazil is the next logical step in scaling our business,” said Ashish Malik, CEO of BVT. “Brazil also represents a great opportunity for BVT to further market a foliar and soil-applied version of CR-7, and we are continuing to evaluate the opportunities for the bee vectoring process despite a more limited commercial pollination services industry compared to the United States.”

Malik also added that BVT’s inroads into Brazil are ground breaking. It’s rare for their authorities to allow a company to patent naturally-occurring microbial strains. The fact that we have been granted a patent for CR-7 speaks to how compelling and proprietary our technology really is. Having a patent-protected product paves the way for significant market entry opportunities with business partners in Brazil. It’s a key part of our strategy to strongly position BVT to capture global market share.”

BVT has had over 65 patents granted and currently has more than 35 pending in all major agricultural regions worldwide, including North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

With this acquisition, Sumitomo aims to expand the operation’s sales territory in Brazil and achieve further business growth by linking Agro Amazonia’s extensive product portfolio

Japan based Sumitomo Corporation has reached an agreement with shareholders of Nativa Agronegócios & Representações LTDA. and Nativa Agrícola e Representação LTDA. (collectively, “Nativa”), an agricultural supplies distributor in southeastern Brazil, to acquire all shares of Nativa to make it a wholly owned subsidiary. The acquisition is through Agro Amazonia Produtos Agropecuários S.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the 2022 fiscal year once necessary approvals from relevant authorities are obtained.

With this acquisition, Sumitomo Corporation aims to expand the operation’s sales territory in Brazil and achieve further business growth by linking Agro Amazonia’s extensive product portfolio based on its strong relationships with agrochemical suppliers with Nativa’s fertilizer development and manufacturing capabilities and new customer segments.

In its medium-term management plan “SHIFT 2023”, Sumitomo Corporation has positioned agriculture as one of its next-generation growth fields and “Agricultural Input & Service” as a steady business growth category. In the agrochemicals field, Sumitomo Corporation started its agrochemical export business in the 1970s and currently operates an import and wholesale business in 37 countries overseas. In Europe, the company has expanded its value chain by acquiring agricultural supplies distributors. In the fertilizer field, since starting the fertilizer raw material import/export business in the 1950s, Sumitomo has built an integrated business base from importing fertilizer raw materials to manufacturers and selling direct to farmers, mainly in Japan and the Asia-Oceania region.

Established in 2000, Nativa is an agricultural supplies distributor with eight locations and a fertilizer manufacturing facility in the state of Minas Gerais, located in southeastern Brazil. In addition to soybeans and corn, the state of Minas Gerais is a region where coffee, fruit tree, and vegetable cultivation and seed production are thriving, especially among small and medium-sized farmers.

Agro Amazonia has been in business since in 1983 and is one of the largest agricultural supplies distributors in the Midwest of Brazil, operating 50 outlets in eight Brazilian states, mainly in the Mato Grosso region. Sumitomo Corporation acquired full ownership of the company in 2018 and has since contributed to the expansion of Agro Amazonia’s business by leveraging its financing, procurement, and business management expertise.
