XAG Annual Conference 2021, held in Guangzhou, China, has launched a series of agricultural innovations to empower farmers.

With the theme “Step into Agriculture”, XAG Annual Conference 2021, held in Guangzhou, China, has launched a series of agricultural innovations to empower farmers with more sophisticated autonomous solutions. Five new products, including the XAG P50 and P100 Agricultural Drone, XAG M500 and M2000 Remote Sensing Drone, and the updated XAG R150 Unmanned Ground Vehicle, are released in China and will be available for global sales in 2022.

For eight long years, XAG has set its record by bridging the gap of the digital divide in about 42 countries, where its agricultural drones are widely used. XAG Agricultural Drone has launched its two new model, P100 and V50. where the former inhibits the classical quadrotor structure with a 40kg effective payload, while the latter adopts XAG’s leading dual tilt-wing design to meet the needs of different users based on the farm size. In addition, XAG has added the Hydraulic Spray system as another task system to its R150, allowing users to rapidly assemble a group of liquid pumps and pressure spray nozzles for crop protection in various farming landscapes.

In April 2021, XAG launched the “Super Cotton Farm” in Northwest China, where two post-90s generation farmers manage a 200-hectare cotton field with the help of drones, robots, and AI.

Retailers can now plan, forecast, and monitor profit margins, while improving customer retention with one platform

GROWERS, a North Carolina-based agriculture technology company, has announced that after a year of testing, its flagship product GROWERS Rally is available for commercial use. GROWERS Rally was created to help ag retail stay relevant in today’s competitive sales environment. Sellers can access a single view of the customer, forecast future sales, organise farm and product information, and make informed, meaningful recommendations.

“GROWERS Rally is built around the needs of agriculture retailers and their farmer customers. The need for close collaboration between farmers and ag retailers has never been more important. Based on our experience in this market, we found that most existing solutions only partially address those needs or are too cumbersome,” said Steven Valencsin, CEO, GROWERS.

GROWERS Rally is for every level of the Ag retail organisation. Front line sellers get helpful information such as universal pricing and product lists, view historical sales, easily apply manufacturer rebate programs, and the ability to quickly and easily send product and price quotes directly to customers via text message or email.

Andi D’Agostino, VP of Product, GROWERS said, “The goal of the GROWERS Rally team is to accommodate but decrease the complexity our users navigate every day as frontline sellers, managers, and retail support staff. If we really understand their needs, we can remove busy-work and create insights so that they can focus on what only they can do, build a strong business.”

The company has already successfully converted its elite corn hybrids into drought resistant traits.

Origin Agritech an agriculture technology company based in China, has announced that its drought resistant GMO trait has completed production trials and an application has been filed for biosafety certificate approval.

Through its collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Origin has already successfully converted its elite corn hybrids into drought resistant traits. The trait has expressed excellent performance under water stress conditions through the whole growing period. Multiyear experiments have shown the yield of drought tolerance corn is 9.2-16.2 per cent higher than non-GMO corn under similar conditions. Under irrigated conditions, the GMO enhanced corn increases water use efficiency by 33-47 per cent.

Dr Gengchen Han, Origin Agritech’s Chairman, said, “We are very excited to have another GMO trait pending approval for a bio-safety certificate, which is the final step in the approval process before the production license. We expect drought resistance to play a key role in the agricultural industry as it is forced to adapt to climate change disruptions globally.”

OmniX Bio will provide venture funding, mentorship from global agrifood life sciences leaders, institutional partnerships and business development support to access domestic and export sales channels

Omnivore announced today the launch of its OmniX Bio initiative to back early stage agrifood life science startups. The program will support Indian entrepreneurs who are working in agricultural biotechnology, novel farming systems, bioenergy and biomaterials, as well as innovative foods, including alternative protein.

Agrifood life sciences can play a critical role in tackling both climate mitigation (reducing India’s GHG emissions) and climate adaptation (securing a future for India’s farmers), as well as other agricultural sustainability challenges.

OmniX Bio will provide venture funding, mentorship from global agrifood life sciences leaders, institutional partnerships, and business development support to access domestic and export sales channels. While all members of the Omnivore team will support OmniX Bio, a PhD life scientist will join the investment team in 2022 to oversee the initiative and help develop the agrifood life sciences ecosystem across India.

Omnivore also disclosed the first investment under the OmniX Bio initiative: BioPrime, which is developing biological crop inputs that enhance yields without harming the environment or the health of farmers and consumers.  The BioPrime team has spent the past few years building SNIPR (Smart Nanomolecules Induced Physiological Response) and BIONEXUS. SNIPR is a discovery platform which identifies innate immunity or natural defence mechanisms in plants, curates unique traits, and delivers tailored crop input formulations. BIONEXUS is India’s largest trait modifying, plant-associated microbe collection. Changes in the diversity of microbiota can confer plants acquired traits like drought tolerance, disease resistance, and enhanced yields, to name a few.

Renuka Diwan, Co-Founder and CEO of BioPrime, said, “At BioPrime we are focusing on discovering fundamental aspects of plant communication, identifying new biomolecules and new modes of modulating plant responses. SNIPR and BIONEXUS enable BioPrime to develop new biologicals and radically improve existing products at a fraction of cost and time.”

Mark Kahn, Managing Partner of Omnivore, commented, “We are excited to launch OmniX Bio to help reboot the agrifood life sciences ecosystem in India. Technological advances in this space can effectively solve some of the toughest challenges in Indian agriculture. We hope to see more entrepreneurs like the BioPrime team step up to the challenge and help change the course of Indian agriculture for the better.”

Nanoparticle-based materials offer a greater advantage over conventional and non-biodegradable packing materials

Researchers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Andhra Pradesh, collaborating with other institutes, have demonstrated how the concept of nanotechnology can be used to develop food packaging materials that enhance the shelf-life, maintain quality, retain the flavour and colour of packed food materials.

Nanoparticle-based materials offer a greater advantage over conventional and non-biodegradable packing materials by enhancing the functional properties of foods such as bio-availability, taste, texture, flavour, and shelf-life. Additionally, nanomaterials in the form of sensors can be employed to maintain the temperature, detect pathogens, pesticides, toxins, and other chemicals in packed foods.

The research also discusses the role of various government agencies in addressing the safety issues, bringing the legislation and regulations on the use and application of nanomaterials. It highlights how bio-based polymers can be blended with nanoparticles to make more efficient and effective packing materials.

Researchers have also emphasised how confidence can be built among the consumers by maintaining transparency in evaluating the effects of nanoparticles on humans and the surrounding environment and accentuated how researchers and industries should develop products that can easily get public acceptance. If the safety and security issues get addressed, nanotechnology will revolutionise the food processing and packaging industry to a great extent and minimise food wastage.
