Maharashtra deploys AI to boost freshwater fish production, targets sector growth

State rolls out tech-driven mapping, Rs 1,024 crore Matsyasampada scheme to enhance output and livelihoods

The Maharashtra government has initiated the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance freshwater fish production, marking a significant step toward modernizing the state’s fisheries sector. The move focuses on AI-driven pond mapping, improved data collection, and scientific management of water bodies to boost productivity.

The initiative involves mapping ponds across regions such as Vidarbha and Marathwada, many of which have been leased to institutions for decades. By leveraging AI technology in collaboration with a private partner, the government aims to generate accurate, real-time data on fish production and operational efficiency. This data will help authorities engage with pond operators and institutions to implement targeted interventions and improve yields.

A key component of the strategy includes desilting of ponds, which is expected to significantly enhance water quality and increase fish production by an estimated 20–30 percent. The government is looking to improve Maharashtra’s current ranking in freshwater fish production, where it stands at 16th nationally.

In parallel, the state is set to launch the Chief Minister Matsyasampada Yojana, marking a major policy push for the sector. The programme will encompass 28 initiatives, including six at the state level and 19 at the district level, with a total outlay of Rs 1,024 crore aimed at strengthening infrastructure, capacity, and productivity.

The fisheries sector has also seen structural recognition with the granting of agriculture status, contributing to a reported 47 percent increase in fish production, according to government data. Additionally, skill development programmes have been introduced in Palghar district to equip local youth for employment opportunities linked to the upcoming Vadhavan Port project, aligning sectoral growth with workforce readiness.
