The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UN FAO) has launched a global campaign dubbed ‘International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026’, aimed at recognising women’s indispensable yet often overlooked contribution to global agrifood systems and to close persistent gender gaps.
Women are crucial stakeholders in agribusiness value chains around the world. Comprising 40 per cent of the global agricultural workforce—and as much as 50 per cent in many regions—women are essential to planting, cultivating, and harvesting, as well as processing, logistics, and sales. 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer will drive policies pertaining to land tenure, finance, and technology access via awareness and collaborations.
In India, this aligns with Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) targets (10,000 by 2027-28, prioritising women-led) and Southern states like Telangana, which leads in the country with 359 women-led FPOs, are offering models for replication.
