APEDA launches first-ever blackberry export from Karnataka to UK

In a milestone move , the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) virtually flagged off the first-ever export consignment of fresh Jamun fruit (Kundana variety) from Karnataka to the United Kingdom. The consignment was sourced directly from a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), doubling farmer income compared to domestic prices—Rs 110/kg against the local average of Rs 50–60/kg.

APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, joined by officials from the Department of Horticulture, Mango Board, and Regional Plant Quarantine Station, praised M/s. Anantha Organic Products Pvt. Ltd. for sourcing directly from FPOs, ensuring farmers reap direct benefits. He reiterated APEDA’s commitment to boosting India’s indigenous fruits on the global stage and opening new export opportunities for traditional agri-produce.

The fruits were processed at a state-of-the-art packhouse approved by APEDA and the Plant Quarantine department, established by Karnataka’s Department of Horticulture. This marks the first time whole Jamun fruit has been exported from India, as past exports were mostly in processed or seed powder form.

Karnataka, a key Jamun-growing state, is now set to emerge as a fresh fruit export hub, reflecting the broader potential of Indian horticulture in global markets. APEDA continues to support such efforts through capacity-building, product promotion, trade fairs, and global outreach for unique products under initiatives like GI and ODOP.
