Rise of India’s mushroom capital

Andhra Pradesh’s ambitious new mission targets scale, exports, and farmer income growth through agri-diversification

In a visionary stride towards agricultural transformation, Andhra Pradesh is poised to launch India’s first dedicated Mushroom Mission—an ambitious, forward-looking initiative designed to position the state as the nation’s foremost producer of mushrooms. Envisioned as a five-year endeavour, the programme aims to establish over 1.62 lakh production units, catalyse rural employment, and elevate mushroom cultivation into a high-value agribusiness of national significance.

With an estimated investment of Rs 13,000 crore and anticipated support from the Central Government, the mission underscores a decisive pivot towards diversification and income augmentation in agriculture. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed the formulation of a comprehensive action plan, signaling the state’s intent to formally unveil this landmark initiative in the near future. Drawing inspiration from Andhra Pradesh’s exemplary success in aquaculture, the mission aspires to replicate a similarly robust, value-driven ecosystem for mushroom farming.

At its core, the initiative seeks to weave together cluster-based production models, cutting-edge technology adoption, and critical infrastructure development to unlock scale and efficiency. High-demand varieties such as button, oyster, and milky mushrooms will be at the forefront, tapping into both domestic consumption and export potential.

The scale of ambition is unmistakable. Approximately 1.62 lakh small and medium-sized production units—each spanning nearly 5,000 square feet—are envisaged across the state. Collectively, these units are projected to yield an annual output of 67,500 tonnes, surpassing Bihar’s current production of around 45,000 tonnes and redefining leadership in the segment.

Beyond production, the mission is expected to serve as a powerful engine of socio-economic upliftment. By generating widespread employment opportunities—particularly for rural youth and women—it aligns seamlessly with national priorities of inclusive growth and agri-entrepreneurship. Financial and technical assistance from the Centre is expected to further strengthen its implementation, reinforcing sustainable farming practices and innovation-led growth.

Ultimately, this initiative is emblematic of the state’s broader strategic vision—one that champions high-value crops, value addition, and technology-enabled agriculture. As Andhra Pradesh sets its sights on becoming India’s mushroom capital, the mission stands as a testament to a new era of purposeful, market-oriented farming.
