How India can align with global Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage (CCUS) trends?

In an insightful session on “Is Bharat Aligned with Global CCUS? – Policy & Management Pathways” industry leaders and policymakers explored how India can align with global Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage (CCUS) trends while building a robust domestic ecosystem at India BioEnergy & Tech Expo 2025.

Sangeet Jain, Co-Chairperson, IFGE: CCUS Forum & Country Head – India, LanzaTech and moderator of the session steered the discussion on policy clarity, technology deployment, and commercial viability.

Rajnath Ram, Advisor (Energy), NITI Aayog shared India’s policy roadmap for CCUS, emphasizing the need for strong frameworks to support investment, scale-up pilot projects, and integrate CCUS with India’s net-zero targets.

Raman Jha, Executive Director – Energy, PwC India spoke on carbon storage options such as depleted oil & gas reservoirs, carbon pricing mechanisms.

Dr Neelima Alam, Scientist F, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India Explained capture technologies like oxy-fuel, highlighted India’s progress through Tata Steel Jamshedpur’s pilot project, and discussed global benchmarks like Norway’s Longship Project. Stressed that CCUS value chains must become more sustainable for long-term adoption.

Gaurav Verma, DGM – BD & Branch Head, M. N. Dastur & Co. (P) Ltd.  discussed engineering solutions for CCUS integration, including design of capture-ready industrial facilities and infrastructure planning for transport & storage networks.

 Baroruchi Mishra, Partner & Group CEO, Nauvata Energy Transition (NET) Enterprise Pvt Ltd focused on industry partnerships & private sector participation, stressing that collaborative models are key to accelerating CCUS adoption in India.

 Kaustubh Phadke, Country Head, GCCA addressed the cement industry’s decarbonization efforts, noting that CCUS is one of the most promising solutions to address process emissions from cement production

The session concluded that India must create a clear policy, financing & infrastructure pathway for CCUS to transition from pilot projects to full-scale implementation – turning carbon liabilities into economic opportunities.
