Kharif 2025 sowing progress: Total sown area reaches 995.63 Lakh Ha, 38.48 Lakh Ha higher than last year

Kharif 2025 sowing has reached 995.63 lakh hectares, 38.48 lakh hectares more than last year’s coverage. Rice acreage saw the biggest jump, rising by 39.45 lakh hectares to 364.80 lakh hectares, while coarse cereals also posted gains, led by maize. Pulses remained stable with minor increases in urad, moong, and moth bean, though tur declined slightly. Oilseeds saw a drop due to reduced soybean acreage, while sugarcane grew and cotton acreage fell marginally.

The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has released the latest progress report on Kharif crop sowing for the 2025–26 season, showing a total area coverage of 995.63 lakh hectares, marking an increase of 38.48 lakh hectares compared to the corresponding period in 2024–25. Rice has recorded a significant increase with 364.80 lakh hectares sown so far, compared to 325.36 lakh hectares last year, an improvement of 39.45 lakh hectares. Pulses have maintained stable coverage at 106.68 lakh hectares, marginally higher than last year’s 106.52 lakh hectares, with Urad and Moong showing small increases, Moth Bean posting a notable gain, and Tur registering a slight decline.

Coarse cereals have reached 178.73 lakh hectares, up by 7.77 lakh hectares, driven largely by the strong performance of maize and modest gains in ragi. Oilseeds coverage stands at 175.61 lakh hectares, a decrease of 6.82 lakh hectares from last year, mainly due to reduced soybean acreage, though castor seed has recorded an increase. Sugarcane area has risen to 57.31 lakh hectares from 55.68 lakh hectares, while jute and mesta have seen a slight decline. Cotton stands at 106.96 lakh hectares, down by 3.53 lakh hectares compared to last year.

The normal area (average of 2019–20 to 2023–24) for all Kharif crops is 1,096.65 lakh hectares. With 995.63 lakh hectares already sown, this year’s coverage shows a healthy improvement over the 957.15 lakh hectares recorded in 2024–25. The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare continues to monitor crop sowing patterns closely, working with state governments to ensure timely input supply, irrigation support, and field advisories to farmers. The positive growth in total area coverage reflects favourable monsoon conditions and sustained government support under various farmer welfare and crop promotion schemes.
