ICAR-RCER’s Dr Rakesh Kumar receives prestigious Dr R C Gautam Young Agronomist Award 2024

Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Senior Scientist at ICAR–Research Complex for Eastern Region (RCER), Patna, has been awarded the Dr. R. C. Gautam Young Agronomist Award 2024, recognizing his pioneering work in climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture. The award, which carries a gold medal, certificate, and memento, was conferred by Dr. Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director and Vice Chancellor of ICAR-IARI, at a commemorative event in New Delhi marking the 81st birth anniversary of the late Dr. R. C. Gautam.

With over 15 years of research and field engagement, Dr. Kumar has become a driving force behind transformative agronomic interventions in eastern India. His contributions span conservation agriculture, integrated rice-fallow management, land restoration, jhum (shifting) cultivation reforms, and millet promotion for nutritional security. Particularly notable are his efforts in developing climate-resilient model villages in Bihar’s Buxar and Gaya districts—initiatives that have empowered smallholder farmers to adapt to climate uncertainties through science-based practices.

Dr. Kumar’s recognition was met with resounding applause from an audience of distinguished agronomists, scientists, and academicians at ICAR-IARI. Among the dignitaries present were Dr. Anupama Singh, Dean, ICAR-IARI; the Director of the Water Technology Centre; family members of Dr. Gautam; and senior faculty members.

“Dr. Rakesh Kumar’s work exemplifies the spirit of grassroots innovation and scientific excellence. His recognition is a matter of pride for the entire ICAR-RCER community,” said Dr. Anup Das, Director, ICAR-RCER, Patna. Echoing this sentiment, Umesh Kumar Mishra, Member Secretary (Media), added, “The institute congratulates Dr. Kumar on this well-deserved honour and looks forward to his continued contributions to resilient and inclusive agricultural development.”

The Dr. R. C. Gautam Young Agronomist Award celebrates emerging leaders in Indian agronomy who embody dedication, innovation, and impact—values that Dr. Kumar has championed throughout his career.
