The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, will organize the Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025 on June 13 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Aimed at boosting inland fisheries and sustainable aquaculture, the event will be chaired by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and other senior dignitaries in attendance.
As part of the meet, the government will launch and lay the foundation stone for Rs 52 crore worth of fisheries projects across seven inland states and Union Territories under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The event will also include the distribution of Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs), aquaculture insurance, and certificates to fisheries cooperatives, Farmer Producer Organisations (FFPOs), and start-ups to support small-scale fishers and enhance digital inclusion in the sector.
Key technical sessions will cover reservoir leasing policies, sustainable practices for wetland and riverine fisheries, input supply chains, and innovations in cold-water aquaculture. Participants will include fisheries officials from inland states, scientists from ICAR institutes, and industry stakeholders in a hybrid format.
The ministry highlighted significant growth in the sector, with total fish production rising by 104 per cent—from 95.79 lakh tonnes in 2013–14 to 195 lakh tonnes in 2024–25. Inland fisheries and aquaculture now account for over 75 per cent of total production, which has grown 140 per cent to 147.37 lakh tonnes.
Efforts to modernize the sector include approval of over 45,000 units—such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), cages, and raceways—and pilot projects using drones in partnership with ICAR-CIFRI for fish transport and resource monitoring.
The meet is expected to provide a strategic platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and promotion of eco-friendly practices in India’s inland fisheries ecosystem.
