ICAR-CIFT inks MoU with Kerala Agricultural University

The MoU will lead to the transfer of technology on the conversion of fish waste-to-wealth

The ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Kerala signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala for transferring a novel technology on conversion of fish waste to fish manure.

To mark the occasion, the institute organised the Technology Demonstration Programme in collaboration with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kumarakom, Kottayam under the Kerala Agricultural University under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan Component today.

Inaugurating the programme, the Chief Guest, P Prasad, Minister for Agriculture, Government of Kerala applauded the institute’s efforts to develop the promising and apt technology for converting the fish waste into feed and manure. The minister accentuated that the technology will help ineffective management of the huge volume of unhygienic fish waste dumping in the fish markets and processing/peeling industries throughout the state.

Dr R Chandra Babu, Vice-Chancellor, Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala appreciated the Institute’s initiatives for leading the state to move forward in attaining the goal of organic farming through the production of organic manure or fish feed from the fish waste.

Highlighting the importance of Fish Waste Management, Dr Ravishankar CN, Director, ICAR-CIFT, Cochin stressed that the technology will help in the best utilisation of the nutrients found in fish waste for the preparation of feed or manure.

More than 100 participants including departmental officers, fishermen, fisherwomen and entrepreneurs participated in the programme.
