In a groundbreaking collaboration, Syngenta Flowers presented the first-ever Syngenta Flowers Show in Pune, Maharashtra, India, along with distributor Dhandeep Seeds and Shree Balaji Nursery.

This trial event coincided with the prestigious HortiProIndia 2023 International Exhibition & Conference, which attracted many growers to the region.  

Anil Ambekar, owner of Shree Balaji: “Including all stakeholders from the flowers value chain, the audience included over 500 visitors. Flower growers from across India took the opportunity to see the innovative and tailormade assortment that Syngenta Flowers selected for this event. Our team worked very well together with the team of Dhandeep Seeds and Syngenta Flowers during the event to provide information and tips to growers. Everybody enjoyed the face-to-face conversations on the unique challenges of growing in Indian conditions.”  

These conditions include hot and humid climates and local substrate mixtures with native soil, coir, and dried cow dung. 

The hot and humid climate of Pune put the genetics to the test with several heavy rainfalls, just a week before the show. Yet the resilient plants withstood these adverse conditions, which highlighted once again their genetic robustness. 

The event not only highlighted the top-quality genetics of Syngenta Flowers but also revealed the collective effort required for such a monumental initiative. Hosting this large-scale event for the first time required careful planning and a significant amount of commitment.

Sistema bio unveiled the world’s largest manufacturing facility for biogas plants in Chakan, Pune on World Environment Day. Spanning an expansive area of 130,000 square feet. The advanced facility boasts an outstanding annual production capacity of 100,000 prefabricated biogas plants. With a staggering investment of 150 million INR ($1.8 million), this state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is poised to meet the growing demands of Asia Pacific and Africa.

During the inauguration event, Alexander Eaton, Sistema.bio’s Co-founder and CEO, expressed his pride and appreciation for the facility, stating, “This facility is an example for the world of innovative technology and efficient business operations, creating a global impact. For every smart biogas unit that comes out of this facility, we can measure outcomes in farmers’ lives impacted, better human health, and better climate health.”

Presently, the factory operates at a daily capacity of 360 units, with future plans to double this output through automation. In comparison to the previous facility’s production capacity of 30,000 units, the new factory exhibits an annual production capacity of 100,000 units. This colossal manufacturing facility will produce biogas plants at a scale like no other in India and has been certified under ISO 9001, demonstrating the delivery of high-quality products with strict quality standards and efficient production. Sistema.bio’s revolutionary biogas technology is patented in India for biogas reactors and membrane templates. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of the Government of India has officially recognised and approved Sistema.bio’s modern and innovative biogas technology in December 2022.

Equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, the factory efficiently produces modern biogas plants, biogas booster pumps, H2S scrubbers, and assembles a full suite of biogas plants including biodigester and cookstoves. Over the next five years, Sistema.bio India aims to implement automation to significantly increase its capacity, enabling the company to extend its reach to hundreds of thousands of farmers across the country. Furthermore, Sistema.bio has set a goal to install one million biogas plants in India by 2030.

Otur collection centre is launched to directly source certified organic produce for customers across in West India to start with.   

In continued focus to empower farmers and offer the trusted, certified organic high-quality fruits and vegetables to its customers, Amazon Retail India has launched its eleventh farmer collection centre in Otur, Pune, Maharashtra.

In Maharashtra alone, Amazon Retail now operates six farmer collection centres at Manchar, Nasik, Wai, Kunjirwadi, Tembhurni and Ratnagiri, working with over 5000 farmers including various Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) sourcing locally grown fresh fruits & vegetables.

Various types of fruits & vegetables like certified organic vegetables, exotic vegetables, seasonal fruits and fresh leafy vegetables are sourced directly from farms across Maharashtra. These collection centres assure farmers of fast payments, fair and transparent pricing, and guidance on various other farming possibilities.

This new facility at Otur will be an addition to the fast-expanding produce value chain network enabling farming community to leverage the digital economy and have their produce reach consumer as fast as possible. Amazon’s farmer collection centre has a robust temperature-controlled supply chain infrastructure that provides the right starting point for high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables. After sourcing from farmers, Amazon uses state-of-the-art technologies to inspect and monitor the quality of fresh fruits and vegetables at multiple stages across its supply chain. The fruits and vegetables are sorted, graded, geotagged, and packaged in different sizes in well-aerated sustainable packaging materials at specialised processing centre primarily focused at retaining freshness and quality attributes, which is then trans-shipped to Amazon Fresh fulfilment centres located closer to customers.

The National Bee Board (NBB) organised a workshop on ‘Strengthening of Export Potential of Honey’ at Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management (VAMNICOM), Pune, Maharashtra. Dr Abhilaksh Likhi, additional secretary, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, chaired the workshop. Dr Likhi launched bee wax products manufactured by FPOs during the workshop wherein it was also decided to establish a cooperative honey project at VAMNICOM.  The workshop also gave a platform for honey processors, exporters, FPOs and agri start ups to share their experiences about the future strategies for export promotion of honey.

India is one of the major honey exporting countries in the world and has exported 74,413 MT of honey worth Rs. 1221.17 crore during 2021-22. More than 50 per cent of the honey production in India is being exported to about 83 countries including major markets like USA, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh and Canada.  Some of the major varieties of honey exported are mustard honey, eucalyptus honey, lychee honey, sunflower honey, pongamia honey, multi-flora Himalayan honey, acacia honey and wild flora honey. 

India has around 12,699 beekeepers and 19.34 lakh honey bee colonies registered with the National Bee Board at present and produces about 1,33,200 metric tonne of honey, as per the 2021-22 second advance estimate. A total 102 projects worth Rs. 133.31 crore have been sanctioned under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) till date. Under the scheme of ‘Formation of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organisations’, 100 FPOs of beekeepers/ honey producers have been allotted to TRIFED (14), NAFED (60) and NDDB (26) for the implementation of activities under NBHM. The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has also developed an online portal, Madhukranti, to maintain traceability records of honey and other beehive products.

The association has been formed to aid farmers with a Decision Support System for guidance and management of onions and garlic.

Sharing his views on the association, Kishore Shah, Head – SPOCHUB (an initiative by ESDS Software Solution Ltd), said, “This association will be the best suit for every onion and garlic producer as it will connect the farmers with a government organization that is dedicated to their wellbeing through an easy-to-use medium. ICAR- DOGR services offered through Famrut will help simplify the farmers’ jobs in their field with a solid research-based, and data-driven Decision Support System.
