National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli (NIFTEM-K), under the aegis of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), hosted a high-level international delegation comprising of 17 representatives from the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) region, National Fortification Alliances, including technical experts and policymakers and officials from the West African Health Organization (WAHO), underlining the regional significance of this knowledge-sharing initiative, visited NIFTEM-K to study India’s successful food fortification initiatives. The visit, organised by German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) brought together representatives from Burkina Faso, Senegal, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, and Madagascar.

“This exchange represents a significant milestone in international cooperation for food fortification. As an Institute of National Importance, NIFTEM-K is proud to share India’s expertise and technological innovations in food fortification with our partners from Africa, contributing to global nutrition security” said Dr. Harinder Singh Oberoi, Director of NIFTEM-K.

The interactions led to deliberations over the international cooperation for fortification initiative. Mr. Arvind Kumar (Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries-MoFPI), in his special address, emphasized on the crucial role of the Ministry in supporting such collaborative initiatives to enhance global nutrition. He also mentioned the important flagship schemes of the Ministry including PMKSY, PLISFPPI and the PMFME etc. Interactive session by the experts discussed over fortification standards, regulations, trade practices in India and the globe. Sh Arun Om Lal, Industry Chair Professor, NIFTEM-K while moderating the session provided insights into NIFTEM-K’s infrastructure, research capabilities, fortification facilities and advanced food processing facilities at pilot plants as well as FSSAI notified food testing facility of CFRA, underscoring its role in capacity building and industry partnerships.

Dr. Komal Chauhan, Head-CEFF and Dean (Research & Outreach), NIFTEM-K, warmly welcomed the national and international delegates, fostering meaningful discussions on strengthening fortification policies, scaling up effective interventions, and advancing food security. The visit provided a platform for knowledge exchange, international collaboration, and strategic partnerships, reinforcing NIFTEM’s commitment to driving innovation and excellence in food fortification on a global scale.

As part of the event, the Odisha Government hosted a dedicated session titled “Unlocking the Flavour of Odisha: Opportunities in Food Processing.

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) successfully concluded World Food India 2024, with Odisha emerging as a key highlight for its exceptional display of diverse food products, innovative technologies, and significant investment opportunities. The event, held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, brought together manufacturers, producers, food processors, buyers, investors, policymakers, and global organizations, offering a comprehensive platform for collaboration across the food industry.

World Food India 2024 featured a diverse range of activities, including exhibitions, conferences, thematic knowledge sessions, buyer-seller meetings for B2B engagements, as well as B2G and G2G meetings, and CEO roundtable discussions. Odisha’s Pavilion, led by the Government of Odisha, with Palladium as the Knowledge Partner, stood out as one of the major attractions, captivating visitors with its vibrant representation of the state’s rich cultural heritage. D Prasanth Kumar Reddy, IAS, Director of Industries, Odisha, inaugurated the Odisha Pavilion and interacted with exhibitors, expressing appreciation for the contributions made by local entrepreneurs and their high-quality food products.

As part of the event, the Odisha Government hosted a dedicated session titled “Unlocking the Flavour of Odisha: Opportunities in Food Processing.” The session, moderated by Bibhuti Bhusana Dash (IOFS, Special Secretary to Government, MSME Department, Govt. of Odisha), featured a distinguished panel that included: Hemant Sharma, IAS, Principal Secretary, MSME Department, Govt. of Odisha, Gokulananda Mallik (Minister of MSME Dept., Govt. of Odisha), D. Prasanth Kumar Reddy, IAS, Director of Industries, Odisha), Amit Patjoshi (CEO, Palladium India), Prof. Pravat Kumar Roul (Vice Chancellor, OUAT, Bhubaneswar), Shri Kamlesh Mishra (President, Odisha Seafood Exporters Association). The panel discussion emphasized Odisha’s growth potential in food processing and highlighted its strategic role as an investment hub in the sector.

World Food India 2024 provided a global platform for businesses to network, collaborate, and explore new avenues for growth. Odisha’s active participation underscored the state’s leadership in the food processing industry, positioning it as a preferred destination for investments.

“Key pillars such as facilitation, infrastructure, financing, market access, and entrepreneurship are critical to the development of the food sector. The Government of Odisha plays a pivotal role across these verticals. Both the Central and State Governments continue to support the sector through policy initiatives and schemes for the promotion and sustenance of MSMEs, including food processing units. In addition, MSME multi-product parks are being established in all districts to meet the infrastructure needs of the sector,” said Gokulananda Mallik, Minister of MSME, Government of Odisha.

As on 30th June 2024, Ministry has approved 41 Mega Food Parks, 588 Food Processing Units, 61 Creation of Backward & Forward Linkages Projects & 52 Operation Green projects under corresponding component schemes of PMKSY.

It is observed that the Food Processing Industries have emerged as an important part of the Indian economy in terms of its contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment, exports etc. During the last eight years ending 2022-23, Food Processing sector has been growing at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of around 5.35%. Gross Value Added (GVA) in Food Processing sector has also increased from 1.61 lakh crore in 2015-16 to 1.92 lakh crore in 2022-23 (as per First Revised Estimates of Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation). The employment in Food Processing Industries has increased from 17.73 lakh in 2014-15 to 20.68 lakh in 2021-22 as per the latest Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) report. Moreover, the percentage share of processed food export in agri-food export has gone up to 23.4 per cent in 2023-24 from 13.7 per cent in 2014-15.

In order to ensure the overall development of Food Processing Sector and to help it to overcome various challenges, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is implementing Central Sector Umbrella Scheme viz Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) and Centrally Sponsored Scheme PM Formalization of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFME).

MoFPI through implementation of PMKSY across the country helps in creation of modern infrastructure with efficient supply chain management from farm gate to retail outlet for promotion, overall development and growth of Food Processing Industries, through creation of employment opportunities, reducing wastage of agricultural produce, increasing the processing level and enhancing export of the processed foods. MoFPI provides financial assistance as capital subsidy in the form of grants-in-aid (GIA) under various component schemes of PMKSY for setting up of new food processing industries/units/projects and also expanding the existing ones. As on 30th June, 2024, Ministry has approved 41 Mega Food Parks, 399 Cold Chain projects, 76 Agro-processing Clusters, 588 Food Processing Units, 61 Creation of Backward & Forward Linkages Projects & 52 Operation Green projects under corresponding component schemes of PMKSY.

MoFPI also provides financial, technical and business support for setting up/ upgradation of micro food processing enterprises under PMFME scheme. The scheme is operational for a period of five years from 2020-21 to 2024-25 with total outlay of Rs 10,000 Crore. A total of 92,549 micro food processing enterprises have been approved for assistance under PMFME as on 30th June, 2024.

PLISFPI is, inter alia, intended to support creation of global food manufacturing champions, branding and marketing abroad and support Indian brands of food products in international market. The Scheme is being implemented over a six-year period from 2021-22 to 2026-27 with an outlay of Rs. 10,900 crore and a total of 172 food processing companies have been approved for assistance under various categories of the scheme as on 30th June 2024.

The inauguration of the second edition of the ‘World Food India 2023’ mega food event took place at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, in New Delhi, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the event. During the inauguration, the Prime Minister provided Seed Capital Assistance to over one lakh Self Help Group (SHG) members, reinforcing the support for these groups. Prime Minister Modi also toured the exhibition displayed on the occasion. The primary objective of the event is to present India as the ‘food basket of the world’ and commemorate 2023 as the International Year of Millets.

On the first day of World Food India 2023, a total of 16 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) and various industry entities. These agreements amounted to a total investment of around Rs 17,990 crore. Notable companies participating in these MoUs included Mondelez, Kellog, ITC, Innobev, Nedspice, Ananda, General Mills, and Ab Inbev, among others.

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, organised a Roundtable discussion on the inaugural day of World Food India 2023. The event was co-chaired by Union Minister Pashupati Kumar Paras, Ministry of Food Processing Industries and Union Minister Piyush Goyal, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles. The Roundtable brought together senior government officials and CEOs from over 70 leading companies operating in the food processing and allied sectors.

The Prime Minister emphasised the significant recognition received by India’s food processing sector, often referred to as the ‘sunrise sector,’ owing to the outcomes of World Food India. He said that in the past nine years, the sector has attracted foreign direct investments exceeding Rs 50,000 crores, thanks to the government’s industry-friendly and farmer-centric policies. Prime Minister also mentioned the progress made under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in the food processing sector, which has greatly aided new entrants. He further highlighted the ongoing projects under the Agri-Infra Fund, focusing on post-harvest infrastructure, with an investment exceeding Rs 50,000 crores. Additionally, investments in processing infrastructure in the fisheries and animal husbandry sector, amounting to thousands of crores, were encouraged.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s remarkable progress in the food processing sector, crediting the government’s dedicated efforts. He mentioned the creation of the Agri-Export Policy, development of nationwide logistics and infrastructure, establishment of district-level hubs, expansion of Mega Food Parks, and significant increase in India’s food processing capacity. Modi also mentioned unique agricultural products being exported from India, such as black garlic from Himachal Pradesh, dragon fruit from Jammu & Kashmir, soya milk powder from Madhya Pradesh, and others.
