From cocoa-free indulgence to AI-powered efficiency, breakthroughs redefine the future of food
In a powerful testament to its innovation-led strategy, Cargill has secured top honours at the 2026 Edison Awards, with two of its pioneering solutions recognised in the Consumer Food Innovations and Sustainable Industry Solutions categories. The achievement marks the fourth consecutive year that the company’s advancements have featured among the winners, underscoring its sustained commitment to transforming the global food system.
At the heart of this recognition lies a dual narrative of reinvention and efficiency. The Gold-winning NextCoa introduces a bold reimagining of chocolate, offering a confectionery alternative crafted from plant-based ingredients that replicates the indulgent taste and texture consumers expect—without relying on cocoa. Developed in collaboration with Voyage Foods, the innovation provides manufacturers with a flexible and cost-effective pathway to navigate supply chain volatility while expanding product accessibility.
Equally compelling is CarVe, the Bronze-winning solution that brings artificial intelligence to the production floor. This advanced computer vision system enables real-time measurement of red meat yield, empowering processing teams to enhance cutting precision, reduce waste, and improve operational efficiency. Beyond productivity gains, the technology also strengthens workplace safety, fosters skill development, and promotes consistency across protein operations.
According to Florian Schattenmann, Chief Technology Officer at Cargill, the recognition reflects the company’s ability to merge deep industry expertise with cutting-edge technologies to reshape food production at scale. This integrated approach, spanning from raw material innovation to advanced processing solutions, is enabling tangible impact across the value chain—from manufacturing facilities to retail shelves and ultimately to consumers’ tables.
Echoing this collaborative vision, Adam Maxwell, CEO and Founder of Voyage Foods, emphasised the importance of partnership in scaling breakthrough solutions globally. By integrating non-cocoa alternatives into mainstream portfolios, the collaboration aims to deliver both environmental and economic benefits while broadening consumer choice.
Named after the legendary inventor Thomas Edison, the Edison Awards celebrate excellence in innovation, recognising products and leaders that demonstrate outstanding concept, value, and impact. Winners are selected by a panel of peers from industry, academia, and the innovation ecosystem, reinforcing the credibility and prestige of the accolade.
Together, these award-winning innovations highlight how Cargill is redefining the future of food—leveraging technology, partnerships, and scientific ingenuity to help the world produce more, waste less, and deliver smarter, more sustainable choices to consumers worldwide.
