Atomgrid opens Bengaluru R&D Centre to build India’s next specialty chemicals innovation engine

New facility targets patented process development and proprietary formulations for global markets, as Atomgrid accelerates its push to position India as a credible alternative to China in specialty chemicals

Atomgrid, a full-stack specialty chemicals platform focused on agrochemicals, today inaugurated its Research & Development centre in the KIADB Industrial Area, Jigani, Bengaluru. The new facility marks a deliberate bet on R&D-led value creation at a moment when global supply chains are actively diversifying away from China—and India’s window to capture that shift is now.

Most Indian specialty chemical companies remain largely manufacturing-led, with limited R&D investment and shallow global reach. Atomgrid has taken the opposite approach: build downstream first—through global registrations, distribution, and customer relationships—then integrate backward into proprietary molecules and formulations. The new R&D centre is the engine for that integration.

“India is at an inflection point in specialty chemicals. Global customers are actively looking for alternatives to China — but they’re looking for solution providers who combine innovation with execution. This R&D centre is our commitment to being that. We’re focused on developing proprietary processes for active ingredients and patented formulations for global markets, built on a platform that already has distribution in 10+ countries and over half its revenue from exports, said Siddharth Gupta, Co-Founder, Atomgrid.

The facility currently houses 15 scientists and researchers, with plans to expand to 25 over the next 12 months. Its capabilities span the full innovation lifecycle—from route scouting and process development to tech transfer for commercial-scale manufacturing.

The focus is on developing high-purity, cost-efficient active ingredients and patented formulations with robust process chemistry and quality systems that can support both regulated and non-regulated market requirements.

Dr. Prabhu Dharmalingam, Director – Research & Development, said, Our goal is to close the gap between lab-scale innovation and large-scale manufacturing — reliably and repeatedly. India has deep chemistry talent. What’s historically been missing is the process rigour and quality infrastructure to take innovations to a global scale. That’s exactly what we’re building here.”

The R&D centre will accelerate the commercialisation pipeline and support the company’s expanding global registration programme — with filings currently active across more than 10 countries. Over the next five years, Atomgrid aims to build a meaningful IP portfolio through patents and proprietary processes and to establish the Bengaluru centre as a recognised hub for speciality chemical  innovation.

The R&D centre launch follows Atomgrid’s $7 million Pre-Series A raise, which was secured to strengthen both its global footprint and its R&D capabilities.
