From pest control to pulses: Inside India–Argentina’s bold agri partnership

India and Argentina have taken a significant step toward deepening agri-sector collaboration, with the 2nd Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on Agriculture setting the stage for a more structured, innovation-led partnership. The meeting—co-chaired by Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (India), and Sergio Iraeta, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (Argentina)—underscored shared ambitions in agricultural mechanisation, sustainable intensification, and technology transfer.

The discussions focused on aligning both countries’ strengths in areas such as climate-resilient agriculture, pest management, genome editing, precision farming, and new breeding technologies. Both nations, equipped with vast agricultural ecosystems and research capacity, are now strategically positioned to co-develop scalable solutions to shared challenges such as productivity gaps, climate risks, and farmer vulnerability.

India highlighted its expanding portfolio of agri-digital tools, biopesticide innovations, and carbon credit models designed to benefit smallholders. Argentina, in turn, emphasised its scientific depth in plant breeding, mechanisation frameworks, and integrated farming systems. Together, they identified strong complementarities across the value chain—from seed innovation to post-harvest management.

The Indian delegation, which included representatives from ICAR, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and the Ministry of External Affairs, presented key policy milestones that are reshaping India’s agriculture—from risk mitigation and credit access to smart warehousing and export facilitation.

Areas of joint interest included oilseed and pulse value chains, locust and pest control, horticulture modernisation, and the use of precision technologies to enhance resource efficiency. The potential for bilateral cooperation in carbon farming, regulatory convergence, and co-investment in agri-research was also discussed.

The meeting reaffirmed the role of bilateral agricultural diplomacy as a tool for shared food security and sustainability. With global agricultural trade facing increased climate and geopolitical pressures, India and Argentina are laying the groundwork for a pragmatic, future-ready alliance—one that blends technology, policy alignment, and farmer-centric innovation.
