Tripura to invest Rs 50 Cr in agricultural equipment to boost Kharif production

In a major push to enhance agricultural productivity during the ongoing Kharif season, the Government of Tripura has announced an investment of Rs 50 crore in distributing agricultural equipment to farmers across the state.

Addressing a high-level meeting focused on seasonal production targets, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that the initiative aims to bridge the production shortfall and improve yields across 47,500 hectares, including 25,000 hectares earmarked for hybrid paddy cultivation.

“We will distribute 1,500 power tillers this season, and for the first time, subsidies have been introduced for betel leaf cultivators,” said Nath. He emphasized that this targeted support will help increase per-hectare yield by up to two metric tonnes, significantly narrowing the gap between crop production and demand.

To ensure transparency and grassroots-level involvement, the state government has invited block-level elected representatives and standing committee members to participate in beneficiary selection and seed distribution. “Their involvement ensures greater awareness and access to agriculture and horticulture schemes at the village level,” Nath said.

As part of efforts to promote innovation and excellence in farming, the Minister also announced cash incentives for progressive farmers, including Rs 10,000 rewards at the block level, with higher awards at the district and state levels.

The state’s comprehensive plan includes not just equipment distribution but capacity-building for farmers to effectively adopt new tools and practices, ensuring sustainable and resilient agricultural development.
