Centre, Karnataka to compensate mango farmers under PDPS amid price crash

In a major relief for mango growers, the Centre and Karnataka government will jointly compensate farmers for falling prices under the Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS). A differential price of Rs 4 per kg will be paid for around 2.5 lakh tonnes of mangoes harvested this season.

The decision was taken during a video conference between Union Agriculture Minister Shivaraj Singh Chouhan and Karnataka Agriculture Minister N Chaluvaraya Swamy. Union Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi also participated in the meeting.

According to an official statement, both governments will share the cost equally, contributing Rs 2 per kg each.

Karnataka had earlier urged the Centre to intervene after a sharp drop in mango prices impacted growers, especially in key districts like Kolar, Chikkaballapur, and Ramanagara. Prices for the popular totapuri variety in Srinivaspur recently plunged to Rs 450–550 per quintal—well below the Karnataka Agricultural Prices Commission’s estimated C3 cost of Rs 5,466 per quintal.

The PDPS will be implemented by the Karnataka Mango Development and Marketing Board. Mango, a major horticultural crop in the state, is grown on about 1.39 lakh hectares with a projected output of 10 lakh tonnes this season.

The price drop was partly triggered by Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district banning the entry of mangoes from Karnataka, exacerbating market pressures.
