CMFRI to host national stakeholder meet on High Seas Treaty today

The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) will host a national stakeholder consultation on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), also called High Seas Treaty, on today. The meet will bring together leading experts, policymakers and international representatives to discuss India’s roadmap for implementing the landmark treaty.

Organised by the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences in collaboration CMFRI and CMLRE, the meet will discuss the various aspects of the BBNJ Agreement which will enter into force in January 2026.

Sessions on Marine Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge, Environmental Impact Assessment, Area-Based Management Tools, and Capacity Building & Marine Technology Transfer will be held. Experts from various international organisations and leading Indian institutions will present insights on aligning national legislation, strengthening capacity, and ensuring fair benefit-sharing mechanisms during the day long session.

The event aims to engage with stakeholders and receive their inputs.
